Can anyone provide a link to info about "black magic"? I would like to know more about what it is and what it does? I'm not even sure if it's a piece of hardware or software. I tried searching for it but I end up at sites for colorising b&w film/photo or something with little puppets and needles.

Sure seems like this project is no more....it was fun to follow the progress when there was...

Here's hoping Laserman is feeling well.....

Certainly the project is still on, even if updates lately have been rather slow. :)

'Blackmagic' is the nickname for a process Laserman developed; it uses Shake and some custom scripts to combine multiple sources.

Thanks for posting the link Moth3r. It's been awhile since I read that and it still blows me away. In fact, that's probably one of the biggest WOW threads on the forum. The first time I read it I almost literally wet myself!

That thread mentions some very interesting and highly exciting details of the Black Magic process. Do you know if anyone apart from the X0 team has perfected the technique for other s/w or if there is any further info on how to go about doing this?

Laserman mentioned that a webdoc was going to be posted on the X0 site, but it looks like the tutorial didn't quite make it there unfortunately. I would soooo love to learn more about this process.

Yes, thanks for the link Moth3r. (moth rear? Haha) Excellent thread. I think the things that jumped out at me most in it were the "lost in the snow" shots. Those screencaps from the 2004 SE DVD are disgusting! How could a man so obsessed with tinkering with his movies release something that looks that terrible?! Was there some kind of crazy rush to get them done? It's so sad to think that a huge company like Lowry Digital - and by association, Lucasfilm - couldn't do something that guys are doing in their living rooms.

The Star Wars movies ain't the only ones Lowry's screwed up the colors on.

Yeah, I hear some of the James Bond films aren't quite right.

Lowry has nothing to do with colors. They just own the cleanup algorithm. George Lucas supervised the color correction himself at Skywalker Ranch before the files were sent to Lowry.

I love how Zion and the others have yet to comment agains the people calling the project "dead".

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "dead" before, but I do hope it's not "dead" as far as us fans ever seeing it. They're doing some amazing work and I know we'd all love to see it someday. To that end, I'd love to hear my question of months ago seriously answered. (the issue of it being seen by fellow fans or not, which I couldn't really find a solid answer to)

... maybe the X0 team are just building up some suspense before the BIG release. I really hope so.

Without wanting to sound negative or put words into anyone’s mouth, I'm sure that the X0 team are probably reluctant to release anything publicly though for fear of GL and litigation. I know I would be if I were in their shoes.

I'd love to see their final version and I'd also be interested in finding out a lot more on how they achieved it. It'd be fantastic to get some of their techniques, scripts and ideas that they use out in the public domain for others to work with. Hell, I'd buy a legal copy of shake myself if I could have a go with LMs' scripts to see what can be done with some of my own video restoration projects.

A long time ago Laserman made this quote: "There are also some other interesting discoveries we made re the particular noise signature of some of the laserdiscs"

Does anybody know what these interesting discoveries were and how they could be utilised to improve LD footage?

The whole issue of fanediting and LFL is so odd. One minute, they're picking on certain people, then the next, it's "do whatever you want." They even got YouTube to reinstate a ton of spoofs, apparently and said it was cool that people were doing their own stuff. I guess it's more of an issue when the entire movie is involved.

I wouldn't call the project officially dead, just in indefinite hibernation. I think the biggest problem is that by the time its released--IF it is released, or if eventually Zion and the guys decided to just put out whatever they have done at this point--it will become irrelevant. Projects like Paulisdead's Vintage Edit seem to be making most of X0 unnecessary.

What I do think is beneficial, however, is the OOT shots corrected with the Black Magic process that cannot be drawn out of the HD SE souces. For instance, shots of the starfields, shots where some detail has been lost in the crushed blacks, shots that were deleted from the SE like the original Mos Eisley entrance. Currently, our efforts to integrate the existing Laserdisk footage into the clean-up/O-neg sourced SE have been a little lacking--see OCP's Classic Edition, and the upcoming Vintage Edit is having similar problems; Adywan's Revisited resolved some problems through meticulous compositing, but it avoided some of the biggest OOT shots. The biggest contribution X0 can make is provided us with the elements to finally rescue these OOT-exclusive shots, and thats why I want to see it released, or at the very least concentrate on just these elements. X0 is sort of unnecessary now, color-correcting the HD SE is a much better option for about 90% of the film, but X0's gift could be providing some working elements to better fill in that missing 10%.

Just comment on how many times this project has been called "dead".

You guys might want to hold off on doing so until someone who is actually involved in the project actually says as much, ya know?
