spyware problem

I've got a pretty bad problem and I need to get it fixed since finals are this week. I've realized for a while that I probably had spyware on my pc but really was to lazy to do anything about, especially since my computer was working fine. Now I have this icon (a little yellow triangle with an exclmation mark) on the bottom righthand corner of my screen and a window that pops up literally every five seconds telling me "windows has detected spyware". The icon and popup to nothing else. It's really getting annoying. Also, I just downloaded Ad-Aware 2007. I run it, but it doesn't find any critical objects. I also try to get rid of "privacy objects but ad-aware stops working. Any help would certainly be hot

Looks like you're in for some fun and games removing that crap. This page HERE may help.

Alternatively, you could reformat your drive and do a clean re-install of your OS. It would probably be quicker.

Spybot - Search & Destroy is a good program to clean your computer with. Try a startup scan once it's installed.

How bad are "tracking cookies"? Can they do harm?

Cookies cannot harm your computer.

The main concern is that it's possible for 3rd-party cookies, from somewhere like Doubleclick, to track your browsing habits and display targeted ads based on the type of websites you visit.

I just worked on a computer with that exact piece of spyware. I don't know if it was that one or another one on her computer, but I had to reformat.

I'll second Tiptup's advice: get Spybot S&D, not only it can clean existing "intrusions" but also offers immunization to your system. And this method isn't resource-hungry at all (otherwise I wouldn't use it, since I always want as much free memory as I can).

I use Spybot S&D too. Excellent tool.
