Wow that's looking good ^. Makes me want the Jabba scene back in What process / method are you using to create your results in 3d Ady? What I mean is, are you using anything to do with depth of field or is the entire image rendered uniformly?

Hey, just wondering...

Has anyone brought up putting R2 units into the open sockets of all the Y-Wings during the trench run profiles? ILM shot the models and didn't realize that they didn't drop the R2 units into the sockets!

I had a look and i don't think the guys are jerks. They just seems to have incorrect facts and datails. As well as being cynical bastards, but then aren't we all?

Maybe rather than telling them how good it is you should give them the straight facts so that they can make informed decisions. No matter what there will always be people complaining about something.

Well, after reading most of the posts in that thread I'll just say that a couple of them are major a$$holes. Just read the comments posted by "the trumpet play" and "ETandElliot4Ever". Their degrading remarks about Adywan are the height of douschebaggery.

Those two are the ones I am mostly referring to.

If I can be blunt...

Adywan needs to refrain from publicly discussing his PayPal account and the recent donations, because when the rumors start circulating that he is profiting from his edit, he will become popular for the wrong reason. I visited the forum mentioned above to see what the fuss was about, and one can sense that the gossip mill is getting ready.

I understand he is accepting donations for hardware failure, but the fact of the matter is, it is HIS edit and HIS equipment, but he is now being subsidized--and the result of those donations (as documented in this very forum) is that he can complete certain operations required to distribute DVDs to others. No one believes for a moment that the people who donate are NOT receiving a DVD, and this is a slippery slope with big, greasy letters: ACCOUNTANT/LAWYER. I posted several times about the DVDs (e.g., PIF chain, torrenting, etc)--long before the donation talk--and was ignored every time. Thus it appears that there is some secret distribution circle. Throw in talk of money (any talk of money) and you are inviting scrutiny and trouble, IMHO.

It will also be easy for some people to conclude that Adywan is receiving special treatment by the moderators of this forum, because Moth3r probably should have intercepted all the posts dealing with payments. Fan edit + money discussion = red flag

I am not passing judgment here; but I am trying to voice some concern and interpretation about what IS happening and what may happen.

While I agree that one needs to be careful where money meets fan edits, this statement frankly boggles the imagination. There has been endless... ENDLESS... discussion throughout this thread of the ways in which the DVD will be made available. PIF, Rapidshare, BitTorrent... frankly it's been discussed to death, so I'm not sure where you get the idea that there's anything secret about the means of distribution.

Will contributors get a DVD? Eventually, by some means, yes. Most won't get it directly from Ady, unless they also happen to have volunteered to start a PIF chain, which many folks have, including myself. (Publicly, in this thread, not in any secret circle.) So yes, it is nearly certain that the people who are contributing to the hard drive fund will ultimately wind up with a DVD in hand. So will anyone who didn't contribute. The two are not related in any way.

In addition Ady NEVER solicits for help when an HD, etc crashes . It's always a kind memebr of the community who askes "Hey can we help out with that?" But even so it may be wiser to make those offers via PM.

I have not profited, or want to, from this edit. There is no secret distribution circle going on either. I have had numerous offers from people offering me money in exchange for a copy of the DVD from here (all be it mainly newbies) and other sites and i have refused each and every one. I completely disagree with the people that "sell" their edits. That is not what i did this for. I will be sending out copies to the people who have offered to start the PIF chain regardless if they have donated or not. All postage & disc costs will be covered by me and it will also be available through usenet and torrents & possibly rapidshare so it will remain 100% free.

I don't know how effective it would be if a bunch of us joined over there to stick up for Adywan. Since you're established there, it looks like you're doing a good job fighting the good fight. I suggest you just try tp present a few facts to them, and give them a link to this thread. If they care, they might read a few pages and get a different perspective. If they don't care, well, there's not much that you can do but roll your eyes.

In general, I've noticed that people outside of OT.com seem to get a little weirded out by Star Wars fan edits. They have this fossilized concept of what Star Wars is, and when someone tries to come along and change it, they get very defensive, almost as if you'd insulted their religion. And then there's the EU, which has been grafted onto Star Wars, and god forbid you go invalidating anyone's EU. Except when George does it. Only he has the right to make changes.

And Adywan, I love the 3D Jabba scene. Do you have something up your sleeve here?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I've not seen anything to suggest that adywan is sending out DVDs in exchange for "donations"

Well, I didn't say that; but it's not even the point. The point is that the donations are intended SECONDARILY to support the completion of the project. Let's not be obtuse: You cannot secure a copy of the DVD until the project is finished, and--if I am not mistaken--Adywan indicated that the donations would be helpful as a means to this end (i.e., MPEG-2 encoding and DVD authoring).

If I donate money to Adywan, it's not because I want to improve his computer equipment. It is because I want a copy of the DVD. End of story.

Really, there is no need to drag this out. I believe I made my point and we seem to agree that these public threads should resist references to PayPal accounts and "gifts." Adywan will be the target of much criticism, and there's not much he can do about it. But posting in THIS forum that he is 'waiting for payments to clear' rings a bit pretentious in my ears, is obvious fodder for his enemies and--frankly--"boggles the imagination" (Ron?).

I just had a terrific idea!

Don't get me wrong, here, Adywan, the XVID of your edit was, to quote a phrase, "most impressive" (but that's another film), and I was astonished by some of your ideas.

Most stunning of all, even better than the Death Star reveal, was the brilliant idea that Han shoot first instead of Greedo. It must've been a lot of work to remove Greedo's initial shot, but I couldn't detect anything off: well done!

Thanks to your change, Han now acts in self defense. That's a good start, because it allows his character to really GROW in the course of the trilogy. Instead of just drifting through situations, we can watch the films with new eyes and experience his metamorphosis into a relational human being.

It's still pretty subtle, though, and my first time through your edit I missed it.

You've already changed Lucas' intention for the character, and IMHO you've changed it much for the better, but consider the implications if Han fired AGAIN. And AGAIN. And AGAIN. And then stood to fire THREE shots rapidly into the smoking puddle that moments ago was Greedo's corpse.

NOW we have a character who truly gets to transform in the course of the trilogy, and it's also impossible to miss.

I know it's late, Adywan, but surely --- for the sake of character growth --- you can fit this tiny improvement in?

I hate to milk this, but you did call me out.

I agreed with you explicitly that care should be taken in this area. What boggled my imagination was the assertion that distribution plans are being secretly arranged among a select few...

I posted several times about the DVDs (e.g., PIF chain, torrenting, etc)--long before the donation talk--and was ignored every time. Thus it appears that there is some secret distribution circle.

...when in fact the subject has been covered thoroughly, throughout this thread, on a number of occasions. Lots of posts go unanswered, here and in almost every public forum, often because a question has been asked and answered several times already. Suggestion of a conspiracy of silence around a subject that has been discussed ad nauseum is rather absurd. Next we'll be talking about the back-room machinations of the Top-Secret Flipper Decision Council -- you know, since no one has expressed an opinion about the flipper in this thread. (hint: yes they have)

But back to the point... again, I agree fully with your assertion that some will misinterpret Ady's actions, and that caution is well-advised.

It's an interesting thought, but with everything this scene has been through do we really want to put it through yet another historical revision? Give the poor scene a break! Seriously though, I think it would be a bit distracting. A lot of fans are already distracted by the simple fact that they're waiting to see what version of the scene it is, and praying Greedo doesn't shoot first this time. To add to that by having Han shoot multiple times probably wouldn't help.

And then we'd have to deal with all the SW geeks wearing shirts that say, "Han shot first.... ONCE!"

You do realize, of course, that in 1977 Greedo did not fire at all, right? Ady returned Han's character to the original theatrical. It's why so many of us freaked during our first viewing of the SE when Greedo then fired first and Han did his un-natural jump-cut to the left.
In the SE, Lucas changed Han's scoundrel nature, thus weakening the character and the film (not to mention the awful editing mess it created).

before 1997, Han was a stronger character, who did grow throughout the OT.

thanks for the restoration Ady.

and also - btw - the proposed "Tarantino" Han would be overkill (pun fully intended)

On a slightly related topic, but with other applications, does anyone know of a program that can re-encode an mpeg2 PAL video into mpeg2 NTSC video without separating the audio and video streams and later remuxing? I've used vdubmod in the past along with besweet to achieve these ends, but that was quite some time ago and I would hope someone has come up with an all-in-one solution that is quick and efficient by now. Any help?

It wasn't Lucas' original intention for the character, he originally had Han shoot first, when he very easily had the technology to have Greedo shoot first at the time, had that really been his original intention. For twenty years Han had been the one to shoot first, Greedo has only shot first for the last ten years.

At anyrate, I certainly don't think Han going trigger happy on Greedo would be an improvement by any stretch of the imagination. I always had in movies when somebody empties a whole clip into someone in order to kill them. Real life is not like a video game, you don't have to wear down their life bar. One well placed bullet is enough to kill someone and blaster bolts seem to work much the same way. A man who is skilled with his gun, like Han is, would know this. His character comes off a lot smoother by simply pulling the trigger once, getting up and walking out. Job done. Problem solved. Sorry about the mess. Cooly walks away. Why would shooting him three times made him any more of a "changed man" as the trilogy progresses? If Greedo is dead he is dead. Han already kills him, he doesn't kill him anymore than he already has by wasting more ammo/energy on his corpse. Han is not an uptight character, he is much more of a calm and cool laid back one hit one kill kind of guy.
