Adding still image to DVD

Author
Time
I recently purchased some Rifftrax (MST3K guys) mp3's for a few movies, and have been editing them together into a DVD, for my personal use. I've got the first one done, and it's great, but I want to try something that would make it even more cool.

Would it be possible for me to add a still image (specifically the classic MST3K "shadows") at the bottom of the picture? I know it would be static, and is kind of silly, but I think it would make it feel more like an MST3K show for me.

Any ideas on how to do this?

Even cooler would be a looping animation, of the guys/robots kinda moving around, but that seems like it would be insanely difficult for something that I'm going to watch in my basement. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

Just in case you lived in a cave/weren't alive during the 90's, here's what I'm wanting:

It should be fairly easy to accomplish something like that using AviSynth's Overlay() function.

You can do this easily using Sony DVD architect 4. You can import a still image as subtitle track so you wouldn't need to re-encode the video at all. This way you can have the heads at the bottom of the screen when the rifftrax is selected and if you want to put a bit of work in you can have the images change to give the appearance of movement (although not very fluid)

God I miss that show...

Is it not sad that in this time, we are more surprised by acts of love than acts of hate?

Thanks! I guess I'm going to have to learn some new Avisynth functions.

How hard would it be to make a loop of the guys moving a little bit, ripped from a MST3K DVD? Removing the background seems like a pretty tough task, even though their silhouettes are a pretty stark black, with nice clean lines. Any ideas on how to do this?

A moving clip would be more difficult, as you would need to manually animate a mask (rotoscope) for the silhouettes. It may be possible to do automatically if you could find a scene from a MST3K DVD where the actual movie is mostly white and the only black parts are the shadows.

But I suggest you try the still image approach first until you get the hang of the technique. Either add a subpicture with your DVD authoring software, as adywan suggests, or use AviSynth to overlay the image and re-encode the video.

Yeah, I think that sounds good. A still clip will still give me that MST3K feel I'm looking for, and I don't think I'm quite ready for rotoscoping. Thanks for helping me, everybody.

By the way, if you're an MST3K fan, and you haven't checked out Rifftrax.com, I would highly recommend it! I bought rifftrax for the Matrix, Episode I and Transformers, and they are all hysterical! I was worried that they wouldn't be as good as they were way back when, but they've still got it.
