it seems EVERY rip of Song of the South out there is a 25->29.97 telecine. >_<

Anyway, for Aladdin, the video is not the same, (think Star Wars - some of the video was reanimated), so it's going to be a direct rip. (My working AVI is almost entirely VHS-based. The offending line is restored from CD; I don't even have access to the DVD right now, and the DVD goes OOP on the 31st anyway). Pretty sure ADM's edit is the same as mine in scope, just based on the DVD instead of the VHS.

Ah... There are TWO R1 DVD releases of Little Mermaid. The old one was vaulted and I think the new one may be vaulted too.

The first DVD is the OTV. My desire for preservation is limited in scope here - I'm just keeping the original DVD from vanishing into the ether. (Nothing else; I'll leave my discussion of it at that, unless someone finds something wrong with THAT version.) It is the second, remastered DVD which is censored.

Ah, OK - so what are you going to do with Beauty And The Beast and The Lion King? I know about the SFX/SEX sky message - did they change anything else?
Author

Not sure, but even one change is one too many for me.

I believe both of them, however, were significantly reanimated during musical numbers, to "enhance" them for the IMAX experience (only BatB actually made it there). Certainly some stuff in Lion King was reanimated.

That is weird, since the controversy over what Aladdin is really saying in that scene didn't occur until well after the original VHS and LD releases.

And this is a 1993-issue VHS, so it should be unaltered except for "cut off your ear"

Well, the dialogue is missing. It seems al laserdiscs are from september 21st 1994 and later.
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

Two more movies I'm planning to put in the mainline project:

Saludos Amigos (1942)
Melody Time (1948)

Both of these movies were edited for DVD release in the US to remove cigarettes.

There were? How do you know which one is which? I got the Platinum Edition the day it came out, so is that the original? Or do you mean that an earlier DVD release totally separate from the Platinum Edition is the original while all Platinum Editions are altered versions? And if so, what is altered in The Little Mermaid?

By the way, I rarely make my way over to the Preservation Forums, but this thread is making me wish I did. This sounds like a really great project.

It's the 1999 DVD that has the original... the non-anamorphic one. I think all that got cut was the "kneecap" (you can see the shot in question earlier in the thread).

I was wondering about that, because, in my past viewings of the DVD, I could have sworn that I'd seen that, but when I watched it a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't find it at all. I guess I was just misremembering.

Apparently the 1999 release was OAR 1.66:1 and had the original sound mix, while the Platinum Edition was cropped to 1.78:1 and had a new "Disney Enhanced for Home Theater" (DEHT) mix.

So which is the original aspect ratio? Given that the earlier release has the original sound mix, I would guess that that would had the original aspect ratio, but the Platinum version is wider, so it would make more sense that the Platinum is the original ratio.

EDIT: Whoops. I glossed over where you said cropped. Never mind...

1.66:1

Also, all the CAPS movies, at least as far as Lion King, are OAR 1.66:1. Almost all the movies prior to Little Mermaid (what AR is Great Mouse Detective, btw?) are 4:3 (Sleeping Beauty and Black Cauldron which are 2.35:1 are exceptions).

Just noticed this in the Digitalman thread:

Aladdin restored edition
When Aladdin was released in 1993, Arab-American groups protested a line in "Arabian Nights" that was subsequently changed for home video (rather ham-fistedly, if you listen).
Then, certain puritanical child-protection groups became convinced that the line "Good tiger, take off and go" was actually saying "Good teenagers take off their clothes." This line was removed for the DVD release.

I have restored both of these lines to how they were originally heard in theatres.

The video, to my understanding, comes from the IMAX remaster, but I am not aware of any material changes (unlike what Disney did to the Lion King) making a video restoration necessary.

At least this thing is working as a CD player - don't have anything to test it with as a LD player yet, but it's all hooked up.

I might ask my primary DVD supplier for rips of Aladdin so I can check them for paintovers, reanimations, etc. - he sent me Arabian Nights as a proof of concept, it's OAR (slightly pillarboxed).

Sources claim that the "Mary Poppins" DVD releases are double-matted... making the AR correct but all four sides cropped.

I'll have to look into that.

Pretty sure that's the "Kneecap Shot"

Anything that's had an urban legend behind it, Disney's been censoring out of their movies.

I posted this before but were you aware that The Little Mermaid- Platinum Edition on disc 2 has the knee cap scene in the Hans Christian Anderson feature? It's non animorphic but others here have said it looks better than the old limited issue dvd. And Little Mermaid has not yet gone back into the vault, Alladin just did but it's been out for a while.
Ultimatedisney.com is a good place to look around.

About Song of the South. The best version is definitely the BBC 2 broadcast. The Hong Kong laserdisc is unsubtitled but the picture is very washed out compared to the Japanese one. And there was some work here on putting together something good. I really wish I had heard a more recent update from this.

One eBay auction for a vhs tape claimed it was NTSC but dubbed into French. I've never heard of such a release. I did recently come across it in segments on youtube. The picture quality looked really good, both source and lack of youtube compression.

By the way, I live about 30 min from a huge independent video store that sells a ton of laserdiscs. They have a lot of the Disney ones. I saw the Lion King deluxe edition for about $35. I'm considering seeing if I can get a laserdisc player just so I can buy and watch Beauty and the Beast.

There's a whole section on Snopes.com about the supposedly dirty stuff in disney films.

A big issue with Song of the South is source. Every rip we find seems to be a n00b-conversion from PAL to NTSC, which makes it impossible for us to roll back and get a 24 fps NTSC source. Even one that was a TV rip (and has a big S bug at the beginning and periodically) ...

I'd definitely be very happy if a copy turned up that was untouched.

I taped Song Of The South off of BBC2 awhile back, but someone here got a better digital rip - the TV broadcast looked pretty decent, would like a good DVD copy of it if possible.

Have a look on ebay for Disney Laserdiscs, a lot you'll be able to get buyitnow in ebay stores for a few dollars. looking now you can get the regular version of The Lion King for $3 and the CAV boxset for $10, postage puts them up - but if you look around you might find someone selling all the ones you want and you can save on postage.

Is there a Laserdisc of Mary Poppins with the correct aspect ration? Has this not come out on DVD yet..?

Came out on DVD 3 times, and apparently all 3 times it got screwed up. IIRC, 2 of them are T&S, and the latest is cropped on *all four sides*. Everyone seems to say the "Archive" version on laser is the way to go so I'll look into it.

BTW - it was... $4? plus shipping for the BatB laser. eBay, as much as I hate it, is going to be invaluable for this.
