The Vaultbreakers Collection - Disney Preservations

OK, I'm working on this. All of this stuff is sourced from OOP materials, and right now it looks like I'll be able to preserve the OTVs (more or less) of 4 movies:

The Little Mermaid (1989)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Aladdin (1992)
The Lion King (1994)

Easy enough to preserve the first one as the OTV actually made it to DVD before Disney decided to pull out the hatchet. The others only made it in partially reanimated and remixed form.

For the last 3, the best source I have is VHS. Good VHS, but still VHS and FS, so if anyone has LD and can rip these - it would be a great help. (Also, if anyone can give me a direct, un-tinkered-with, PAL VHS2DVD or something of Song of the South... Every rip I've seen so far on the Internet feels like a noob job.) I like to know where my video comes from. I have a "WS LD Rip" of Aladdin that looks suspiciously like a FS VHS rip, and is 560x336. Yeugh. My friend's VHS2DVD looks better.

So... Aladdin. OTV never even got as far as VHS, so what am I going to do? I'm going to take the audio and run it through Audacity, cross-fading in the proper version of "Arabian Nights", and that makes for the original mix, right? (This ain't going to be vaporware, and I'll prolly have it ready in some form THIS week.)

Also - been thinking of making special CG-animated bumpers but I don't really have the tools or knowhow :/

I have Aladdin and Lion King on LD, but no way to rip them for you.

If you want them, I'll send them to you.

Hm. Maybe... Though I'd have to get an LD player first, and that'll take some time.

But considering how important it is to preserve these films AS THEY WERE... I really should start looking into LD players, so that as soon as I can afford to go hunting on eBay for one (prolly March, April, unless I can't find one for less than a couple Benjis), I can get one, and then I might take you up on that offer.

Like drfsupercenter who's sourcing these VHSes for me from his own collection, I have a settop DVD recorder, which is what I use for my video capture - isn't the best, but it's not too bad. I can always touch stuff up on the PC afterward.

I believe ADM did a version of Aladdin and Doctor M did Little Mermaid - versions that utilise the new DVDs but fix up the changed audio and changed video respectively. I know transfers of the original versions as they appeared on home video might be better for purists... but I'd really try and track down an LD player or someone willing to capture LD stuff for you.

A long time ago I posted here on the forums about the Lion King LD set. This is the preservation I'd be most interested in. There are supplemental materials on the LDs that have not been released on DVD, you see. The "Making of" for example. Some legal trouble prevented them from including it on the Platinum/Masterpiece Edition. Plus, a lot of the Disney LDs (IIRC) have the subtle teaser poster images for their covers. I know Lion King doesn't, but it has a cool packaging design regardless.

Definitely going with the LD player approach. I'll prolly do what Dr. Ebbetts does with the Beatles vinyl rips, rip 'em as I can, then as I can improve them, rerelease until I get it perfect.

For VHS, drf's rip doesn't look half-bad, so it's a good start, even though it's prolly P&S.

Friend found a cheap Pioneer LD player on evilBay and he and I are trying to snipe it. Got my fingers crossed.

Got a test version of Aladdin. The VHS rip works pretty well for synching up the CD to, I made an AVI for a test which I might put up for the time being.

I'm this close to (well, drf's this close, I'm paying him after the fact) winning this laserdisc player, back to you in about half an hour xD?

If that's OK, I just won the LD player auction "I" was bidding on, so if the offer's still good I'll take you up on it

I have Aladdin and some others on LD,but what is the difference between the LD's and the official 2 disc DVD's?
Author

Hmm... Not sure how great that player will be for preserving, it is quite a basic model with, I think, only component and phono out. I know I used to have a Pioneer S315 and then bought a CLD925, and the 925 looks and sounds a lot better - especially with an optical out for audio, and SVideo.

Anything's better than a VCR, lol, and at $56 with shipping, I felt it was worth it.

As for outputs - I've read around these parts that most of these decks have better output on composite than S-Video. (My settop accepts both.)

Right now, I'm mostly concerned with having ANY preservation. Having the best... I can wait for more money.

...it's quite absurd to think that such adult themes could be found in a DISNEY feature!?!?

These weren't after all "children's movies", they were "family movies", and only recently have they become seen as movies "just for kids" and edited accordingly.

That they saw any need or any reason to cut stuff willy-nilly out of their films irks me. I want to see the movies the way they were released - only for some movies have I gotten that opportunity.

Wow.

Just wow.

This is screwed up. Wikipedia claims that the DVD of Beauty and the Beast removes a censoring of a couple frames from the VHS/LD versions but apparently, the DVD doesn't have a true OTV option?

I might have to cross-edit the scene together in avidemux or something. :/

Anyway, anyone interested in a "working" AVI of Aladdin (VHS rip, 4:3, but with the original "cut off your ear" line restored from CD) ? It's 731 MB, 640x464, XviD. I'll prolly go the DVD route later... when laser exists, VHS isn't really a good jumping-off point.

So what actually do you intend to do with these releases? Can you give us a run down of what you will insert back in?

BTW - I'd also be interested in a decent rip of Song Of The South from one of the digital BBC broadcasts, or a decent laserdisc rip, whichever looks the best.

On IMDB it says that for Aladdin not only is Arabian Nights different but also the line "Good tiger, take off and go," was omitted. Apparently it is in the VHS version and not on the DVD version. Maybe the removed line is on LD also. I have the Aladdin LD also and a Pioneer CLD-2950 LD player. I have never seen Aladdin, do you know where in the movie I can check for the line?

To Arnie.d:

The VHS has "Good kitty, take off. Down, kitty." (From what I've read the DVD removes the first 4 words)

This extract is from the VHS captions which I resynched after cutting off the previews. Line 831 is the line in question.

829
00:55:39,839 --> 00:55:43,308
GIVE ME A CHANCE.
DOWN, KITTY.
JUST LEAVE ME ALONE !

830
00:55:43,376 --> 00:55:47,078
SO HOW'S OUR
LITTLE BEAU DOING ?
[ Cuts Throat ]

831
00:55:47,146 --> 00:55:49,714
GOOD KITTY.
TAKE OFF.
[ Rajah Growling ]

832
00:55:49,782 --> 00:55:52,384
- DOWN, KITTY,
- WAIT ! WAIT !

833
00:55:52,451 --> 00:55:54,886
DO I... KNOW YOU ?

To charliesheen:

I'm trying to find out what, if anything, was altered in other movies, so I can roll everything back to the original form.

Now, you mention the BBC ... I'm in the US, I can't get the normal BBC, but if the BBC were to air Song of the South, it would be a great opportunity. Provided, of course, they don't tilt-scan it for 16:9!

The best source, supposedly, is a laserdisc edition released in Hong Kong. Supposedly it's not hardsubbed at all, and is already NTSC.

The ultimate goal is simple. I want the OTVs, and I want them on plain DVDs, (DVD5/DVD9 I don't care, but I do prefer NTSC) and my intention is to get to that point. I'm not above getting my source material from vaulted DVDs, if the newer versions are altered (The Little Mermaid), or if the normal R1 version is altered and some other country has the original footage (Mendinso's claim about Lilo and Stitch), I see no problem importing my footage.

Ah, thanks. I checked my LD and it looks like it's the same as the dvd version. He only says "down kitty" although you can clearly see his lips moving before that.

That is weird, since the controversy over what Aladdin is really saying in that scene didn't occur until well after the original VHS and LD releases.

Where were you in '77?

And this is a 1993-issue VHS, so it should be unaltered except for "cut off your ear"

Aladdin:
The censored lines are described differently HERE - can someone confirm, and correct the description if necessary?

Are there any video differences? Are you planning on a VHS/LD to DVD transfer, or just capturing and syncing the audio for muxing with the DVD (keeping in mind this announcement).

Little Mermaid:
I did read a thread about someone working on a restored version, but if the DVD release that was pulled is actually the original theatrical version, then why is a preservation neccesary? Surely this DVD can be tracked down on eBay/Amazon Marketplace or whatever.

Song of the South:
I have this version which is 29.97fps and hard-telecined. Unfortunately the BBC broadcast was also interlaced, apparantly due to a botched NTSC to PAL conversion. Doctor M tried the Avisynth filter "restore24" on it, but I think he gave up in the end. Might be worth trying the newer "R_pack" restore function on it to see if it fares any better.
