Ok, I’m a glutton for punishment. Yep, it’s yet another project. A split-screen comparison of the 1982 Theatrical, the 1991 Directors Cut, the Workprint and The Final Cut. (Screenshots above show early version with both 192 versions, BRDC and Workprint).

As you may know, there are some major differences between versions and this project will highlight them, side by side, for the first time.

11/12/07 - I have already done all of the video editing. I now need to rectify some sound issues caused by ‘seamless branching’. EDIT: Now that the Final Cut is in this mix too, I have more video work to do.

More soon.

Hi all,

Just got the SUPERB Blade Runner 5 disc boxset.

Has anyone got plans to do an “Addicted to…/Wookiegroomer” splitscreen DVD of all the versions?

I would love to see that.

EDIT: Ok, I’ll do it then

Yes, this would be an interesting project to take on. Great idea JD.

I actually made a start on it last night. I've ripped all of the DVDs and am now ready to import them into FCP.

I think I will try to do this project in parallel with 'Star Wars Begins'.

Name ideas?: Blade Runner: Replicated.

It's going to be a hell of a job to do this though. There are lots of differences in these cuts. The best way to view them would be to have the film re-sync where possible to highlight the differences.

Already hit a snag. Storage! I need more.

Better bye a RAID for this one!

So what are the runtime differences between the cuts?
(Theatrical Cut,Director's Cut,Final Cut,Workprint)

I don't have that info on me at the moment. But there are substantial differences.

I've lined them all up in FCP (as Mpeg4 files) at the "LOS ANGELES 2019" point and they all go out of sync within minutes. The workprint in particular. They then re-sync at certain points. My intention is to pause them at certain points to allow them to be synced for the most part.

The problem is that I need them all in DV. And at 22GB or so each, I just don't have the storage at the moment.

According to the excellent Future Noir - The Making of Blade Runner (a highly recomended book by the way) the running times are as follows-

Workprint - 113 min.
Theatrical Cut - 117 min.
Directors Cut - 116 min.

I don't know how long the Final Cut is though.

Your brain just makes s**t up!

A fate worse than death? Having your head digitally replaced with that of Hayden Christensen!

I was thinking of making a 'Bastard cut' purely for my own preferences. I'd keep some of the narration, but not all. I'd keep the Happy ending, but regrade the footage so it doesn't look quite so idyllic and normal. I'd use the raunchier love scene instead of the normal one, and make any other smaller changes as I go. I might also use the rachel line from the deleted scenes to end the film 'I think we were made for each other'.

By the way, THIS is how an official preservation release should look like. And as Ridley Scotts states in the letter that's coming with the set "I've included all versions of the film, so that you can watch the one you prefer." I wish Lucas would think like that!

Agreed. Did a bit of work on this project last night. There really are some considerable difference between versions. The workprint in particular uses many alternate take and different shots.

Some probs already though. My software had some problems ripping the audio tracks. Not sure why yet.

More soon.

Since the "archival"-disc uses seamless branching to sport all 3 versions, maybe that causes some trouble with ripping it...

I thought that might be the case. Thanks for confirming. It's the soundtracks that cause the problem rather than the video. Will have to think of a way round it.

Cheers

Well, all of the video is done. Now I need to figure out that audio issue and integrate it all.

Would the audio work if you ripped it chapter-by-chapter, stream-by-stream?

You're not comparing using the Final Cut at all? I'd say use one or the other 1982 version, but not both as they're not that significantly different, the 1991 DC, the 2007 FC and the WP.

Agreed... ditch the 1981 US-version, since the international cut is the longer version of those two (just containing a few more seconds of violence). The Final Cut woluld be a much more interesting version to compare all the others to.

By the way, are you planning on making this HDTV, as WookieGroomer did with ATSW?

Ok folks. I will bow to the audience. The Final Cut will be in there instead of the International then.

It will be standard definition. I don't have the HD discs.

Just pointing out: you don't need the HD versions to make an HD split-screen.

Assuming the DVDs you are using are PAL and anamorphic, and the AR is approx 2.35:1, that means the active picture area is 720 x (guessing) 436.

Correcting for the anamorphic squeeze gives you 1024 x 436, or 720 x 306, depending on whether you scale the horizontal or vertical.

These sizes are not far off the 960 x 408 or 640 x 272 you would need to make a 2-by-2 1080p or 720p version respectively.

But of course, most people would be happy with a standard DVD version...

Well, due to disc space concerns and the fact that each film will take up less than a quarter of the screen, I've ripped the DVDs in a lower video resolution. So it will be a normal DVD.

Cheers for the advice though. Oh, by the way, check the first post in this thread.
