I am submitting 'Returning to Jedi' to the 'Miami Underground Film Festival' in March 2008.

If anybody has any suggestions or corrections I could make to the doco I would like to hear them.

I am pretty darn sure that in an early Jedi trailer there is an alternate angle of Han breaking into the shield bunker that you did not include. I'm also pretty sure that in an old Jedi trailer there's a longer version of the shot where Leia looks at the camera on the sail barge, long enough to see some of her taking out that gunner (from that close-up angle). I think you can actually see her swing that electric halberd weapon before she looks at the camera. It'd be cool if these shots were in there.

By the way, I just love Building Empire and Returning to Jedi.

I don't have any suggestions for the doco content, but it would be great if you could resolve the minor technical issue we discussed by email a few months ago. Drop me a line if you need any help.

there is also in a trailer an alternate shot of vader arriving on the death star in his shuttle and a diffrerent angle is used as he walks down the shuttle ramp.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

I was actually aware of all of the alternate shots from the trailer, some just didn't work in there. The alternate shot of Vader coming down the shuttle ramp is already in there as is the Han bunker one. They are just very quick and not mentioned. Perhaps you just missed them. There is another Vader shuttle shot that wasn't included as it was too quick and just flew by. The same applies to the alternate Han V Biker scout shot.

I will check out the Leia shot, though it's not ringing any bells at the moment.

There was also criticism for not including a mention of Luke's blue saber as seen in the trailer (and the Kenner toy), so I may try to squeeze in a mention this time round.

M3thr - Check check. I should be able to solve that myself, but I will be in contact if I need your help. Thanks as always.

Are there any mistakes anyone spotted (apart from subtitles problem over the shot of Threepio about to fall from the Barge)??

Thanks all

Ok folks. I am currently transcoding the almighty new "Returning to Jedi: Miami Underground Film Festival Edition".

Not much has changed, just a few tweaks and additions here and there, including:

- Shots of Boba Fett stuntman preparing the the Barge Battle.
- More shots of the man-in-a-suit Rancor that have come to light.
- The addition of some stills.
- General Grammar and spelling.
- The timing of some subtitles and shots.

All I need to figure out now is how to transcode this PAL DVD to NTSC. Is there anyone out there willing to help? Moth3r?

Cheers

If the main feature is 25fps progressive, then the easiest way is to resize the video vertically to 480px, change the framerate to 23.976fps, and resample the audio to run at the slower speed.
Has this edition got menus? You'll probably have to rebuild them in your authoring package when you make the NTSC DVD.

I'm sorry, but I'm not proficient at AviSynth and I wanted to use simple tools to do it. I have the best luck with TMPGEnc. You set the size (720x480), 16x9, encode mode to "non-interlace", frame rate to 23.976 fps (have to do it in that order). Under Advanced tab, checkmark " Do not frame rate convert ". GOP structure should be Max 18. Shouldn't need to make any other changes. When finished, process it through DGpulldown 23.976 --> 29.97 to set the pulldown flags.

I then used Womble MPEG video wizard as a check because it will tell me to 4 decimal places how long it is in seconds (might need to check in minutes to get that part, then seconds, because minutes gives the decimal as frames). I then used GoldWave's time stretch feature on the wav and set the time stretch feature to match the time (setting warns that it will change the pitch, which you want). You can then convert it to AC3 using whatever tool you have.

When everything is complete, i checked it all out in Womble to make sure the lip sync was good, then MUXed it with whatever authoring program I was using.

For some reason, my copy of Empire was corrupted and had a slightly shorter soundtrack than video track, so I had a lot of problems getting it to exactly the right length. Jedi didn't and worked first time through, as has every other video I've processed.

Also. I seem to recall having to encode BE and RTJ in two steps. First was all the settings I mentioned (but a much higher bit rate for first encode) except frame rate (kept as 25fps) and I also deinterlaced it in TMPEnc advanced tab; then processing it again, but with the frame rate change. For some reason, doing the deinterlace and frame rate conversion at the same time was processing each frame twice (that is, double printing). I don't know if it's because I've only worked with progressive material since then, but I've never had to double encode anything since.

You can adapt to whatever program you use, but be sure when you change the frame rate to only change the frame rate number (that is, 25 to 23.976) and that it does NOT "frame rate convert". It seems counterintuitive, but that setting tries to alter the frame rate but make sure the overall time length is the same. You don't want that. You want it to end up longer and the sound out of sync because you are going to stretch the sound out to match the video.

I also used Adobe Audition on the WAV (Gold wave might do this, too) and selectively re-pitched sections of the commentary voices. Using the spectrum analyzer display makes it easier.

Let me know if you need any help.

Yeah, I had to re-encode everything and rebuild menus from scratch. I seem to recall Jambe's features as being interlaced.

Unfortunately the festival requires an NTSC copy, though I will be sending them a PAL copy too just in case.

This new release won't have any extras or elaborate menus by the way.

rebuilding the menus might not be necessary. If you have the NTSC version I created, you can just replace the movie with the new one using vobblanker. This could save you a bunch of time.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

I imagine that if it is for the film festival they want it to go right into the video rather than having to go through menus.

Thanks for your continued help guys.

I'm going to give it a go myself and if I get stuck, I'll come a-knockin.

Sorry, that was probably a classic newbie move, wasn't it...

I'd love to get my hands on an NTSC version as I am in the US (Los Angeles, to be exact). I've always been a big fan of the films and to see such a great work would be a real thrill. I've seen the first part on Youtube and think it would be fantastic to watch on my big tv!

I stumbled across Building Empire and Returning to Jedi on YouTube a couple of weeks ago and I loved them. However, my search for a high quality version has been unsuccessful thus far.

Would anyone with the entire file mind hopping on the old demonoid tracker for the "buildingempire_ntsc" and "rtj_ntsc" ISOs? I'm stuck at 53.9% and 32.7%, respectively. I don't mind how long it takes, I'd just like to be able to eventually finish them and I haven't seen a seeder for days. I'm always seeding the parts of the file to new peers and I would certainly seed the full file indefinitely.

There are links to this tracker on mininova.

I appreciate any help! If there's another way I should go about this, let me know!

The dual layer version never made it to myspleen did it? If anyone can do a PiF or B&P for the dual layer (I'm in Los Angeles too!) version (PAL or NTSC is fine) I'd be very grateful.

Don't forget IFOFIX from page 1 of this thread.

Hi Jambe

I discovered your 2 documentarys on you tube while browsing, I just wanted to say how much i enjoyed them and how well made they are. Its the first time ive seen a film and extras mixed in so well and i thought it was fantastic. I would really like to get my hands on a high quality copy. Iam from the sunderland in the uk and after a bit search about on the torrent sites i cant seem to find anything. Theres the option of trying to download them from youtube but past attemps have had poor quality. Have you got any thoughts where the best place is to look or do you some copies on dvd?

Any help will be appreciated....and again well done on making a great piece of work.

Is anyone out there able to get NTSC copies of my docos to an address in the USA quickly.

I've actually made updated PAL versions of each but the Miami Underground Film Festival can't play PAL discs. So I need either NTSC copies of my original releases or a VERY quick conversion of the PAL discs that are already out with the MUFF dude.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
JD
