Idea & Info: Grindhouse (possible fan-edit?)

 (Edited)

So luckily I caught this masterpiece in theaters and i’ve just found out that the friggin studios are not releasing it as shown theatrically, but as separate films for the DVD release. Which of course is totally opposite to the very idea of Grindhouse features and this one in particular.

So I suppose my question is: who out there is getting worked up about this besides myself? I have no editing skills to speak of so that of course only fuels my sadness that I won’t be seeing Grindhouse as I did on DVD anytime soon.

a guy over at fanedit found out that Residence Inn and Holiday Inn have Grindhouse available to rent to customers. This is the original theatrical version in widescreen!

If that's the case, and Grindhouse is only available for rental, it's ok for someone to "preserve" it, right?

Its either bootleg or b**lshit, there has been no word anywhere I can find that the theatrical version is available... just in illegal torrents

The real question is, when is someone gonna make a fan edit that preserves the theatrical style (i.e. fake trailers at the beginning and in-between), but uses the extended versions of the movies?

A proper representation of the theatrical version should surely be the first step, though, since non-US audiences have been robbed of this experience altogether.

A bootleg could be used as a template to edit together the official extended releases, together with downloads of any trailers that aren't included on these discs...

It's sourcing good quality trailers for Rob Zombie and Edgar Wright's trailers that could be a challange. Eli Roth's trailer was posted on IGN in a decent quality. But hey, if we're making a preservation of the theatrical version. maybe members here could submit there own fan-edited trailers for the extra features! I've had a few that i've been brainstorming!

Anyone heard anything on the feature-length version of Machete?

My Grindhouse fan-edit I would like to do is a version of Deathproof that cuts out some of the pointless bad dialogue - the Shut-Up-And-Drive Edition? Cut-To-The-Chase Edition?

These are the fan edits I'd like to see for GRINDHOUSE:

1) Theatrical version preservation:
Fake trailer opening
Theatrical cut of PLANET TERROR
No credits after PT
Fake trailers intermission
Theatrical cut of DEATH PROOF
Credits for PT and DP at end

2) Exended theatrical version:
Fake trailer opening
Extended cut of PLANET TERROR
(PT credits as an intermission? Since it *will* be substantially longer)
Fake trailers
Extended cut of DEATH PROOF
DP credits (or both if no intermission credits)

3) Fan-edit cut, as andy_k suggested.

I have a feeling that Tarantino is holding out on releasing "Grindhouse" as it was in theatres to milk the DVD release. After all, aren't we still waiting for a "Kill Bill 1 & 2" package that he promised? Those trailers will see the light of day as an official release. The problem is when....

I was planning on a couple of ideas. I'm assuming somebody will try to recreate Grindhouse as it was shown but just with the extended versions. I have two ideas

1: Recreate Grindhouse with real trailers that would of been shown in grindhouses or drive-ins (where i'm from) and team Death Proof with a more similar movie - maybe a Russ Meyer film.

2: The one I would most likely do. double feature tribute to QT. The trailers would be to some of his favorite films and the after death proof I would show "The unofficial QT cut of True Romance" that I made about 2 years ago* but never got around to releasing it in many places. The only change I would do is add the grindhouse effects (maybe the film burning, missing reel, the dirt/noise on the film and probably the burn marks with the loud pop) to the True Romance part.

What do you all think?

* I was here about a year ago and was going to post it but lost the url and just came across it again.

My girlfriend and I just went to the Hyatt Place hotel and they had Grindhouse as well as some other movies in theaters (Die Hard 4, etc). Anyway, when someone said they saw it for rent at a hotel, I assumed it was on DVD. Actually though it is a pay per view type deal. If someone was to go back to the hotel and order the movie and "preserve" it, how would one do so? Would the hotel know if a tivo type box was placed between the tv and the cables?

Around 2-3 years ago, hotel ppv systems were commonly used as sources for pirate "SCREENER" copies. Typically the releases were presented as 4:3 pan and scan and were free of any watermarks or "property of" messages. All it took to make a copy was a laptop with a USB TV tuner.

I haven't stayed in a hotel recently, but I would expect these days that their ppv systems have encryption and tamper alarms to stop illegal copies being made. The fact that there hasn't been a scene SCREENER release of Grindhouse is a good indication that it's not as easy as it used to be.

For the lazy (usually me), from page three of this link:

Tarantino has famously refused to compromise, fighting for the ear-slicing scene in Reservoir Dogs when its distributor Miramax wanted it toned down; releasing his martial arts epic Kill Bill in two parts rather than making cuts. But the two films that make up Grindhouse have now been prised apart and re-edited. Both will now come out in the UK as stand-alone movies, although Tarantino says Grindhouse will eventually be seen here on DVD and also perhaps in repertory cinemas. 'It won't disappear,' he says, as much to convince himself as me. 'After the movie was over, I grabbed 20 prints and stored them, and Robert has 20 prints. So we can show it when it needs to be shown.'

But he insists that Death Proof is not a compromise, that in countries where there was no tradition of trashy double bills - so, most territories other than the US, the UK and Japan - the plan was always to release longer versions separately. 'A case could be made that my compromise was Grind-house,' he says, and if he doesn't believe this then he's a far better actor than critics have given him credit for. 'Because me and Robert had to cut our movies way down for it to work as a double feature. We wanted to create an experience. It was very challenging to cut your movie to the bone, and I only had the strength to do that because I knew Death Proof proper would go out too.'

Some have a flashing watermark that says property of hotel in it that appears at random in certain frames of the movie.

Planet Terror isn't out yet, is it? I've only seen Death Proof in stores. I would have thought they'd at least release them both at the same time. Sheesh!

Has anyone documented the differences between the "Death Proof" extended cut and the theatrical version (using one of the cam releases on torrents as a source, obviously)? That way we can piece together the best looking and most accurate theatrical cut as we can.

My girlfriend and I are going back to the Hyatt Place tomorrow night. Think we should attempt to order and record Grindhouse if they still have it?

YES!

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

It would be in your own interests not to discuss such things on a public forum.
