I've added all your releases to fanedits.com. My v1 PAL DVD is corrupt, but I still have the v2 and v3 Xvids on my hard drive so I was able to add in full specs for these files. You or anyone else are welcome to edit and update the entries.

I just wanted to congratulate Darth Editous for this amazing piece of work, i found out about this projects recently and downloaded this first. This is simply the Star Wars Episode IV movie as it should have been shown in theaters when the re-issue happened in 1997.

This has earned a spot in my DVD shelf; as the *only* version of EP IV i own (besides the VHS trilogy i purchased back in 1995). The way a movie should be seen in these days, anamorphic 16x9, DD Audio mix. And as i said in another thread in these forums, i must admit i enjoy the polished FX as made by Lucasfilm and ILM in the last decade.

Thank You!

Darth Editous,

You may not know me, but I am a regular on the other site, and I was asking ADigitalMan for some help on a project of mine and he said I should contact you about some help I need on a project of mine. Since you did a wonderful job on his Superman movie. He said, "Put a post in his Ep IV thread stating you'd like to ask him for help, and then PM him the details." So I am going to be sending you a PM in a few minutes.

If you've been reading my Episode V thread, you'll know I've found myself dragged back into editing Episode IV after learning how to write AviSynth plugins.

This means I can now fix a lot of the things I just didn't have the time or patience for last time around. For example, I don't think I ever really noticed that Vader's mask had red eyes until recently, and by then I'd already edited and inserted a lot of shots of Vader, for example during the duel. This meant that to repaint his eyes would mean dropping down another generation of MJPEG compression - it would almost certainly be unnoticeable, but it would have made things very awkward, having to extend inserted shots with unadjusted material.

Now, though, I've been able to write an AviSynth plugin which will do it "live". This means I only need to store a mask rather than storing the whole repainted shot. It also means I need to load less AVIs into AviSynth, which limits me to around 70 inserts, which had meant splitting the movie into three sections.

I've also written a plugin to fix the bad blue screen problems that are occasionally visible during the attack:

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/8546/badbluegn2.jpg

I only fixed one or two shots like this originally, but there are a lot more (none as bad as the above). Then I found there were other shots which showed a similar blue glow:

And it even removes the blue glow on the Star Destroyer's engines:

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/3512/sdpn1.jpg

At this rate I may just apply the plugin to the whole movie...

Other new fixes so far include: a corrected aspect ratio for the clock wipe from the Sandcrawler to the Stormtroopers (now implemented as an AviSynth filter), some matte lines around a TIE fighter removed, and a brief shot of Tarkin mouthing something else before he says "Yes?" fixed.

Maybe it's my monitor's fault (too much glare right now, maybe? Or maybe it's just my eyes...), but the only one I really see a difference in is the removal of the bluish glow above the Star Destroyer's engines. That one is readily apparent, but I'm not seeing it in the other two, I'm afraid.

Nice that you've found a "simple" way to apply fixes to so many things that were bothering you. This must be an amazing learning experience, not only for you, but for all those that can apply some of your knowledge to their work as well. Your work is going far beyond being just a great edit.

On a slightly selfish note, I really hope you can look into that "In fact, I uh...also thinking about their agreement" thing. I can't be the only one who has noticed that over the years.

You may need to turn your brightness up - I have mine turned up so I can keep an eye on the blacks.

I'll certainly investigate that line at some point - right now all the raw audio's FLAC'd up.

I see no difference in the second, but the first and third look better to me.

DE, bang up job, that must save a ton of work.

so.....*cough* hum...any chance of the plugin you created to remove the blue hue at all? I'm assuming it is a text file the main avs file references? or is an actual plugin?

Here.

No parameters, just call it with either:

badblue(clip)

or

clip.badblue

No guarantee it won't make your computer explode, etc etc...

In order to do that, you need to call it with clip.bosworth

A new AVS plugin that someone might find useful: mutehue

Input must be RGB32. As the name implies, it selectively desaturates pixels of the specified hue. It takes three parameters:

hue: the target hue to adjust (0-360)
tolerance: tolerance of above (+/- degrees)
weight: amount of muting (0-1)

Before and after (applied twice, once on cyans (hue=190) and once on reds (hue=350)):

Hey, some color correction! Yay!

A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em

Yeah, with my new-found AVS plugin skillz I've been looking at all sorts in ANH. That shot above is an abomination - the walls are almost bright cyan, compared to almost grey later - makes me think all they did was make sure C3PO was gold and screw everything else. Later on, Obi-Wan has orange lips. Then during the battle, Wedge shoots orange frickin' lasers! Then there's all the lasers that Lowry picked out as noise and desaturated...

In other words, don't hold your breath

Well, eh. If you could apply this to ESB for the battle with Vader, I'd be one happy guy.

I appreciate that faneditors like you put so much work into their projects.

That is a massive difference!

It would be really interesting to know if any Lowry people have seen this thread. They may think "I wish we would've had time to do even a fraction of what DE has done." I'm sure there are some big Star Wars fans that work for Lowry who felt very excited and also disappointed at the same time with that project.

this avisynth color correction stuff is GREAT. if you ever release a v4 of some sort, would it be on DL to preserve the quality?

also i was wondering what programs you use to paint/fix frames. is this possible in photoshop? i have cs3.

edit: i think i figured it out. open avi in photoshop and edit individual frames then export to avi. (some reason mpegs were not working for me but thats fine.) then integrate that into your premiere workstation.

get this in premiere with that plugin...

Badblue: input must be RGB32!

what should i do? i'm new at writing avisynth scripts.
