The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released) — Page 4

To Belbucus, and everyone else involved in this project, i would like to say a big thank you for all the work you have put in to create this amazing piece of work. Although when i first saw Star Wars in '77 in was with the Dolby 6 track mix, this is the mix that i most fondly remember and preferred. This brings back memories of Christmas in the '80's, sitting down waiting for Star Wars to come on ITV. Beru's voice always stood out for me and once i heard the mono mix i just hated the other dubbed versions of beru. I would like to ask your permission to use some dialogue from your mono mix for my edit (credit will be given to you of course). Finally having a good quality mono mix for Beru's lines is a godsend to me and couldn't have come at a better time.

I'm happy this is availble. For those of us who aren't that technically knowlegeable, how exactly does one put this sound mix on the DVD?

Roger that, now that I've downloaded it, I see I've gotta grab yet another application to expand it. Got that, done.

Thanks!

I can't wait to listen to this synched up to my 2006 disc... and I look forward to seeing it as an alternate track on any future "restoration"
Star Wars discs! Now somebody needs to do the 6 channel version...

Just listening a bit and it sound fantastic!

Interesting... in this audio track he says "Blast it WEDGE where are you" (not "BIGGS") and "You've got one on your tail" is there near the beginning of the battle (as in the '97 edition).

I thought both of those were changes from the original version... but I guess the source doesn't lie!

Belbucus - thanks for posting those details. It shows just how dedicated you were and much care you took with this project.

adywan (or anyone else) - I've no problem with you using parts of this for your project.

Over the weekend, I've been testing out a DVD authored with mono PCM audio and the video taken from the official Region 1 GOUT disc. I'm pleased to say there seems to be no problems with playback at all - all three players I tested the disc on played flawlessly. My Dolby Digital receiver plays the sound from the front left and front right speakers, but turning on pro-logic processing forces it to play out of the centre speaker.

In the technical section, I've posted a quick guide if you want to make your own custom DVD: LINK (NB: Anyone requesting a fully-authored DVD will have their posts removed).

Downloading as we speak.

Does anybody know where to find Belbucus' synced version of the theatrical stereo? I can't seem to find the thread anywhere.

Thank you! I've always wanted to hear the mono mix. I've listened the first 30 min and sounds good!

I hope someone uses this as an option in a fan preservation... umm, I don't know, X0?

(Not sure if you were kidding).… but the serious answer would be that the only available source for the discreet elements (outside of the Lucasfilm vault) would be from a 70mm print. Find me one and we’re in business! I could probably work up a Prologic version - stripping the additions off of the ‘93 mix, but personally I find them all to be welcome additions.

I found you posed a similar question awhile back in this thread: http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=6570&STARTPAGE=8

The dialogue was:

Schorman: Have you thought about doing the pre 1993 mixes of Empire and Jedi? They're probably not that different, but still interesting for completists.
Thanks again for the two mixes already available and for the others yet to be distributed.

Belbucus: I had not considered it for the reason you mentioned - that is, to my knowledge there are no significant differences to be had. Content is virtually the same, yes? The overall EQ maybe slightly different, but as I recall, the LT/RT versions of both of these were quite robust sounding and are probably very similar overall to the '93 mixes.

If something new has come to light, please let me know.

Fine with me…. I don’t own any rights to this stuff. You might find that it does not match up too well with the Stereo versions. If this turns out to be an issue let me know, and I’ll see what I can do. It might be better to start with the unprocessed files.

GOUT DVD using 'Faces' PCM Sound?

All those links are dead now - could someone upload the 1977 PCM Stereo for Star Wars (preferably the "reference level" one) to RapidShare or a torrent or something? I'd also appreciate the '85 mixes of Empire and Jedi, if Belbucus or someone else ever synchronized those to the GOUT, but those don't really matter so much to me at the moment.

Ok, I'm gonna need some help here. I've dealt with .shn and .flac compressions for years but this wavpack has got me baffled. For the life of me, I can not figure out how to unpack the .wv file. Yes I read the nfo but I don't get where I'm supposed to enter that command in? I downloaded what I assume is the wavpack program but the .exe file does nothing for me. Any help for what I'm doing wrong?? Thanks in advance.

You need to unpack from the command line. Extract the wvunpack.exe into the same folder as the WV file, go to Start > Run, type cmd and press enter. Now navigate to your folder and enter the command: wvunpack "m48 dvd.wv"

Well, you can use the command prompt in windows (start > run).
You can also make a .bat file. Open notepad, type: wvunpack "m48 dvd.wv" and save the file as a .bat file like "unpack.bat". Save it in (or copy it to) the folder with the m48 dvd.wv file and wvunpack.exe and run/execute it.

New from Belbucus:

35mm Dolby Stereo vs. mono mix comparison

Belbucus writes:
A running comparison of the '77 Dolby Stereo mix
(folded down to mono) on channel 1 - to the '77 mono
mix on channel 2.

Now being posted to a.b.starwars

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

I realized that in preparing this that I missed a step.

When folding the Dolby Stereo mix down to mono, I neglected to decode the surround channel separately and add it back in. As it is, any surround information has been phase cancelled and is essentially absent from the mono folddown. For this particular exercise, I think the track as it is, serves the purpose well enough - the sole exception being that the discreet echo on the dialogue in the chasm is not heard.

It is simple enough to fix and reissue if anybody wants me to.

For anyone interested, I can PIF 3 copies of Belbucus' awesome mono mix restoration.

The file fits on a CD. First come, first served.

Belbucus, I've listened to about half of this (using headphones), and I must say it sounds very good. Thanks for all your efforts!

I still have all 3 PIF copies of this available. Please PM me if interested.

Either there's no love for the mono mix, or all interested parties already have it. I hope it's the latter.

I might still have this on a CD somewhere - let me rummage through some things and I'll see if I can't dig it back up.
