Easiest way to get 5.1

Getting 6 mono files from a project is easy, but is there a painless way to encode to 5.1 (AC3) without having to use command lines, scipts, etc?

Anyone have any experience for a newb in this field?

Official Dolby-licensed encoders don't come cheap. Sony sell AC3 encoders as plug-ins for their audio/video suite (Vegas, Sound Forge, Acid Pro). There's also an audio transcoder included with Scenarist.

Aften is a free alternative.
