separation of dialogue/sound effects in center channel of surround sound?

The subject says most of my problem. I have already demuxed the surround sound audio of a particular DVD, but upon listening through the different channels I was a bit disheartened to hear that it appears most of the key sound effects and dialogue are contained within the same channel--that being the center channel. Is this unusual?

My goal, ultimately, is to ditch the dialogue and keep the sound effect and vice versa in a few different places.

Has anyone else run into this and found a way around it? If there is no work-around I'm left with the difficult task of re-creating some foley elements in isolation.

Thanks in advance!

What you're hearing is normal, and there's no way around it that I know of.

I thought perhaps it was normal, too, but I was hoping I was wrong! :-p

I'm sure that somebody here has encountered this problem before, though. What have other FanEditors done when they've encountered this problem? Thanks!

While each channel can be a discretely different soundtrack, that doesn't mean it will necessarily be mixed as such. There can be intentional "bleed" from one channel to another to make a more seamless transition from one speaker to another, or for a wider soundstage. As such, whether or not one can isolate music from audio really depends on how a particular soundtrack was mixed.

Right. Thanks to you both for the concise explanations!

So, do any FanEditors out there have any tales of how they've solved this pesky problem? Surely I'm not the only one to encounter this! Thanks again.

Let's see:
- Darth Editous recorded himself doing a Mark Hamill impression.
- Adywan mixed parts of his soundtrack from the ground up (using sound effect libraries? not sure).
- ADigitalMan scoured several Liam Neeson films to find the dialogue he wanted for his Ep. III edit.
- Trooperman is redubbing all of Hayden Christensen's dialogue in his reworking of Ep. II.

I'd not heard about that. Was it any good?
