That clip is fantastic! I don't think I've seen this before, but there's something familiar about it, specifically the 'fairy tale' bit.

Since it appears that this did in fact air, I see no reason not to share it with the Star Wars community. I really hope another copy surfaces.

(the Netherlands).

Storm it, until you hold the the copy in your hands. hahah jk

In all honesty if something like this hasen't been located by a member of this forum prior to this thread I think its gonna be really tough to get a hold of. We have a golden opportunity with Darth Neo, not that he should be forced to do something he doesn't want to but if we could help get the approval from a higher power or whatever he needs to be comfortable sharing this, I would think that could be a good route to take first. Again I'm not saying lets play Darth Neo for all he's worth it is totally his decision it just seemed he is reluctant due to others.

Who's to say you won't see it? You just won't see it from him at least until he gets permission or he changes his mind.

Sorry but the whole "permission" thing is BS. Clearly he doesn't care about it or else he wouldn't be posting pictures, clips and creating a website about it.

This whole thing is created just to tease us.

I'm sure he has better things to do than to go to all this trouble just to tease you....

Re-read the first post, he came here looking for help - any information anyone might have about this etc. Instead he gets people grumpy that they want it and can't have it. I WAN'T IT NOW MUMMY!!!!

Respect the fact that he said he wouldn't duplicate the tape and distribute it.

If he is happy with creating a website and posting a few clips and some info, well that is more than you would ever have seen if he decided not to.

I think quite a few of us have been given things over the years that we have had to swear not to hand out copies of, sometimes we can show bits of it (like some Leia scans I posted a few years ago), or at least feel we can without breaking a promise... I'm glad he has shared what he has so far, and that more may be forthcoming on his site. Hopefully someone here or elsewhere can add to the info about this.

If he is doing as much as he feels is right within whatever agreement he made then so be it.

Be happy that this has turned up and enjoy the bits you get to see - he didn't have to show anybody anything at all!

Sure it is disappointing not to be able to see the whole thing right now - but perhaps other copies will be found now that people know it exists, or circumstances might change, but bagging someone out for sharing some of a rare find seems counterproductive to me.

What information is he exactly looking for?? Clearly he has more information about it than any of us. He has the damn thing!

I'm not whining and saying "I want it now." I just think it's kinda crappy to post pics, clips and whatknot on a website all the while claiming that you're not supposed to have a copy.

Hell, there are things I have that I promised not to ever distribute and I don't. I don't brag about having them on the net either. It's just bad form.

I think this would be a great documentary to be preserved. However, wouldn't the source of video who Darth Neo got it fromhave more information than any of us here? Or has this been sitting on the guy's shelf for the last 27 years?

If he made a promise not to distribute the video, that's ok. But I wish he would change his mind.

Did you just call us meth addicts?

Showing us a small clip is much different than copying and distributing the film.

So he's gonna log back in soon and find us fighting? Ugh.

If he promised he would not distribute it, then we shouldnt be bulling him. Besides, it sounds like he is looking for a way to distribute this if it was broadcast or if another tape existed somewhere, it might change things.

No, it was an analogy. It is really late where I am, I haven't had more than 4 hours sleep in the last 30 hours, and I have a headache. So I am not thinking as clearly as I would other times. I am sorry if I seemed snappy or selfish.

P.S. I just deleted what I posted previously.

Hey Darth Neo,

Good morning. I am sorry that you have woken up to find feuding on this thread.

The majority of us respect your decision not not distribute this documentary, particularly when your source has asked you not to. However, in my experience (as with the rare 8mm Yuma footage) once I contacted the original owner and expalined the originaltrilogy community, they were more than happy help. One of his friend shut the door saying that he would never give it up! Have you asked your source directly?

This community is not just about trading. Some of us go to great lengths to produce original material to simply share with the other members of the forum. 'Building Empire' and 'Returning to Jedi' for example cost me a great deal of money and time to produce and I have not sought any financial or material recompense for it. I did it just for fun.

In the meantime, I have contacted my many collector friends and a few other prominent contacts to see if they can offer a copy to the community. Hopefully together we can manage it and not compromise your relationship ad agreement between you and your source.

Welcome to the forum and once again and thank you for bringing this rare gem to our attention.

Update : after some researsh, Michel Parbot worked for French television during the 70-80s and made a short version of this documentary for the french tv show Temps X devoted to scifi.

so the documentary we are talking about here is a french production.

I disagree. I think he does care. He wants us to know about it, but he also wants to stay true to his word. He's in an awkward position. Now, sure, he's posted a few pics and one clip. Depending on his original conversation with the owner, that would say whether or not he's done something wrong. So it's impossible to say if he has or has not. Either way, he's stated he will not distribute the whole thing..so that leads me to believe that he believes that's what was agreed on. He obviously doesn't think it would be wrong to show snippits, otherwise he wouldn't be doing it.

No point complaining. I didn't know about this rare special until this thread was created. Who's to say the guy isn't doing this as if to say "Hey! Guys! Look, I can't give you this but check out all the info and track down another copy so I can release this one!"

I have seen a lot of the latest entries and I must say I'm a bit disappointed. I used to participate on forums a lot, but it has always amazed me how people misinterpret someone’s intentions and how even the smallest positive things can turn into something negative. As I have explained myself why I started this tread, I feel the need to explain myself further. I'm sure that there will be things that I say now that pisses people off again but that will be on yourself.

To know or not to know

I have seen a lot of things that will never be released to the public in the knowledge that I would probably never see it again. It has killed me to know these things but I cherish these memories. I have written down everything that I have seen to remember it (example: Gary Kutrz's personal photo collection), and in some cases have obtained these things at a later date. I myself would rather know than not know about these things because it (in part) drives my star wars obsession to collect. As long as there are things to obtain out there (vintage original trilogy stuff in my case), there is a drive to my obsession.
That there are people who would rather not know is understandable, but I have acted out of my own feelings.

Why ask for information, he has the damn thing

I have never come across information about this documentary on the internet or otherwise. I know it comes from the private collection of Gary Kurtz (and has probably lain on his shelf for 27 years). Because I am making a website about rare items (video, images and such), I would like to provide more information about this documentary (what's the point in just showing pictures if you can't tell about it in depth). Why was it made and never made public (or perhaps aired just the one time). I have always been amazed by what information people can unearth. A good source for me has been the Yahoo group Star Wars Aficionado (have seen you there too Jambe Davdar ).
Because of that in depth information out there I thought that there might be people who might not have the documentary, but might know something about it.
I am certainly glad that I posted this tread because I get bit and pieces here and there and know more than I did before.
It seems this is a French production because a search for "sygma television" brings up al kinds of French links to a French television station. This seems to correspond with the notion that Michel Pardot worked for French Television in the eighties.

The Dangling carrot

It has not been my intention to dangle a carrot in front of you. Nor be selfish and say LOOK AT ME.
I understand that people would like to see this thing. I can compare this to the beginning of the internet when I would look at sites like "Star Wars: as seen on TV". It had full descriptions and screenshots of shows I had never seen living in the Netherlands. I would get this craving for these shows some of which to this day I have not seen.
This guy had all these shows on video and wasn't going to share with others unless you had something in return. He even had a special wish list on the site for it ( http://www.lucasfan.com/swtv/ ). Was he holding a carrot too???
And what about Warwick Davis and his "Return of the Ewok". He has been showing this on conventions, but apart from the snippets from the official site and the cam version, there hasn't been a full release (legal, or otherwise???)

Why show screenshots

I was going to do that anyway on the website. My intention for the website is to show everyone about this show to share to knowledge and in the hopes to get an official release in the future. I also knew that a lot of people would start responding by saying I was talking about SPFX: empire. I order to illustrate what I was talking about I felt I needed to show you through some screenshots in order to avoid unnecessary responses.

Don't kill the messenger

Enthusiasm I can understand, some of the entries that I have read here I cannot. It will not help me in my conviction to share if people get angry or give demanding messages. I have been very clear about this and I'm not happy with some of the responses people have given me. I'm almost regretful that I posted this in the first place if it wasn't for some very positive and understanding posts:

Sorry but the whole "permission" thing is BS. Clearly he doesn't care about it or else he wouldn't be posting pictures, clips and creating a website about it.

I just think it's kinda crappy to post pics, clips and whatknot on a website all the while claiming that you're not supposed to have a copy.

Hell, there are things I have that I promised not to ever distribute and I don't. I don't brag about having them on the net either. It's just bad form.

The whole point about drug addicts and alleyways (deleted stuff)

The Promise

I don't know about the rest of you but I have never broken a promise. The promise was given in the knowledge that this program was something special (and had never been made public) and for legal reasons could not be distributed. I got it several years ago from someone who got a direct copy from Gary Kurtz. Now I have also met Gary Kurtz a couple of times a find him to be a soft-spoken, giving person. The person I got the copy from is not someone who is in my life on a regular basis (He himself shows and tells other people about it so I’m not breaking any promises there). That said I have two options:
I can get in touch with this person and ask permission for a fan copy or I can get in touch with Gary Kurtz and tell him about the fan preservations and ask him for permission since he is the direct owner of this thing. I will do my best to get permission since I feel that if you guyz find another tape from back in the eighties it will not be of the same quality as this copy.
When and if I get permission to make a fan copy it is my intention to do it myself through the upcoming website, so you'll have to bear with me. My first concern however is the release of the website. There is one credo that I remember when collecting and has worked for me so far: All good things come to those who wait….(no pun intended)

For the Future

I will continue setting up the website with or without extra information. There are some people here that have a very reasonable responses (Laserman, Jambe Davdar ), and I would like to continue communicating with these people. Perhaps through hotmail or something…

The website will get launched in a few weeks and you can expect more screenshots and more clips and in the future a full transcript (when I get to it) from the program.

If permission is given I will make a fan-preservation DVD of the program.

I'm sure I've said something wrong somewhere in here, if so it's not intended to upset anyone. If someone doesn't agree with this or is angry about this than that's too bad………...

Greetz,

Darth Neo

O, one more thing:

Is this the one that has the outtake of Obi Wan's ghost trying to wake up an 'unconscious' Luke in the snow?

Darth Neo,

Thanks for your noble and considered reply to what, for me, has been a very interesting 24 hours. This time yesterday I didn't know that this doco even existed and for that I thank you (again )

It's a shame that you had to see the darker side (no pun intended) of this forum. It is usually a very decent place to be. Some people just feel that they have a right to get what they want (see the comments on how 'unfair' the lack of an NTSC copy of 'Returning to Jedi' was!). Equally there are many good people here and I hope you don't become a stranger to the forums.

I totally understand your position. Some of us have been privy to things that we cannot tell other people. At least you are honest. These days thats a virtuous characteristic not found in many.

I look forward to our continued communication (jambe.davdar at gmail) and I wish you all the best with your website. I am really looking forward to it.

Regards

Good for you Darth Neo. I have every respect for your decision and thank you for giving us the information about this lost gem. I sympathise with you as I have lots of Star Wars related items that I just cannot share. I don't give details for fear of getting the same response that you have received here in this forum. Good luck with the sire and if you need any help do not hesitate to PM me.

Darth Neo, thank you for joining this forum and providing information about the existence of this rare video. I'm sorry your experience was marred by a few idiots here (the same idiots I might add are part of the reason why mverta no longer posts on this forum).

I hope you will rise above it and continue to contribute. Good luck with the website, and I look forward to seeing updates!

Hopefully this will be allowed to be released. But I have to agree with what was said here that if it hasn't been found until now, odds are that this thing won't be found elsewere. But I'd love to be proven wrong. Hopefully Darth Neo can get permission to have this released to us. But I do understand why you aren't releasing it and it wouldn't be right to just go out and start copying it like mad and distributing it everywere. But I hope you do understand our excitement on seeing something new unearthed on this.

As for why it was never made public, it sounds like it was, sort of. At least one person here saw it in Canada, so it at least aired there. From other posted comments around, it sounds like it might of aired elsewere, maybe on some local stations. It is rare today, probably because it only was aired once, and never got a home video release, like SPFX:ESB did. So it got forgotten about, which would be easy to do, considering that due to the age, and the prominence of the similar SPFX:ESB special. But the ultimate reason why it was never released probably will never be known if your sources where you got the tape don't know. We can only guess.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay!

"Idiots?"

I assume you're referring to me for simply questioning his intentions?

And name calling? That's not the best way for a "mod" to act.

I wasn't looking to insult Neo. I was actually being sincere in my response. The holier-than-thou attitude of this forum seriously has to go.
