Holy $#!+ that was amazing....

I'm speechless and stunned.

I hadn't been following this thread that closely, but now I can't wait to see this puppy

Why the hell can't LFL do something like this (in addition to release the OUT) for the 30th Anniversary uber-box?!?

ETA: I haven't read the whole thread but I'm assuming you're planning on doing the entire trilogy...

I can't seem to download this now - it says file invalid or something to that effect.

Any chance this could be re-posted?

Okay I just read this entire thread. How did I manage to skip over it all this time?!?

This is by far the most ambitious fan edit I've ever heard of, and the one I'm most looking forward to. I'm looking forward to the Reborn project too, but for an entirely different reason. Theirs is a total reimagining of the saga. Your edit is what the Special Edition should have been.

Wish I could have seen some of those earlier video clips that are no longer available.

Simply amazing work, Adywan... LFL should hire you immediately upon the completion of your version of the saga (we have first dibs on you!)

Keep it up man...

Adywan, what is it that you added/changed to that shot of Tarkin and the Luke/Leia chasm scene?
Author
Time
oh that's.

there's one or two creative choices I personally don't agree with but you can't argue with the quality of what you're doing. fantastic stuff and I'm really looking forward to seeing it on my 46" lcd screen with the lights down.

I'll just second what someone else said, the hyperspace spin when han is talking to leia just feels tooooooo sllllooooooooowwwwww. it needs to spin faster really. other than that though, great. the shimmer to the lightsabers is very nice as well although does that mean you'll be adjusting the sabers in ROTJ, ESB and the prequels? because they don't shimmer in them.

Ok, I made a bit of a cockup with the trailer. I was trying to get the trailer finished and imported the test version of that shot instead of the finished shot. It was 5am in the morning. The finished shot is faster.

Yes, i will be redoing all the lightsabers in the saga.

there is nothing different in the Tarkin shot. That was just added as a character shot for the beginning montage. The change in the chasm scene is the wide shot when they swing across. I have widened the shot with a matte so they now look a lot higher up than in the original.

I love what you did with Obi-Wan's death, now there is even a burn mark on his cloak!! the sabers look beautiful on the duel, I have a question though, Is Obi-Wan going to ingnite the saber on that shot like it was on the trailer, or is it still going to be the way it was in the original?

Yes that is how Obi-Wan ignites his saber. I never liked that horrible sideways ignition and i also wanted him to ignite it prior to the audience seeing Vader.

Well, i need to get back to work now.

One thing bugs me about the trailer. Greedo blinks right when he emphasizes a word. A human would possibly widen his eyes and stare more defiantly at that right movment to emphasize the word with his eyes too. I guess a Rodian could have a problem widening his eyes more than normal, as they are so wide already, but in this shot right before the blink, his eyes get narrower so I think this could be done.

In the scene with the Death Star and the planet, I think the planet is moving too much. I think it would be better to have it stationary than to move it at all, so that we get a better feel for it being very far away, thus increasing the sense of these objects being of massive scale. Note that a moon orbiting a planet must be at an altitude several hundred times its diameter, so this would make sense.

Adywanm, you SERIOUSLY need to work for Lucasfilm. Your work is amazing!

Very good one or two things look a bit iffy though...

The planet moves too much in both shots of the death star and the star destroyer zipping off into hyperspace doesn't look quite right.

Also the Luke/Leia scene in the chasm, the wide shot doesn't look as if it syncs with the close shot very well with regard to the position of the actors mid swing although that's probably the original footage at fault.

Still a lot of very good work there, congratulations on keeping your sanity.

Don't forget that Greedo isn't human

Yeh, these are a couple of shots that has plagued me. I just couldn't get the first shot especially to look as good as i wanted it to. i didn't want to get bogged down with it so i decided to leave it as it was until a later stage. I've just gone back and redone those shots and its finally clicked into place. Also the stardestroyer going into hyperspace is ripped direct from ESB so not my effect.

yes, its to do with the original footage. All i have done is widened the shot and nothing else.

What did you do to the shot of the TIE going after Biggs?no Marquand here

When i posted the trailer i stated that this shot was unchanged as yet.

SomethingStarWarsRelated, I do like your ideas for that end scene. My idea for the extra scene with the Emperor is still in its planning stages and may yet be unworkable, but your ideas have definitely given me more avenues to consider . Keep them coming I would have to use original footage of someone dressed in an imperial uniform due to the transparency issues from existing footage. So now i think that this is the right time for me to ask for some help.....

Does anybody fancy having the chance of appearing in Star Wars? Here's what i am looking for.....

I need about 3 to 4 people who have either a full rebel pilots uniform of at least the helmet with goggles. Because i am extending the Death Star battle slightly i want to show more of the rebels being destroyed. backgrounds of the cockpits would be added in at a later date. These pilots would mainly be used for quick shots inside the cockpits as they are destroyed but i am planning on giving at least one some lines. If you can help with this then please contact me, or post in here.

Also, as a standby incase the new end scene is doable, I may need someone with a complete imperial officers uniform. i would prefer if this could be someone with a british accent, or could do a good impression of one, so i can keep the theme of the english officers from the OT. Again please conatct me, or post in here, if you can help.

well i woke today to start a new shot and decided to check my emails first and received 3 anonymous emails containing a barrage of abuse about my edit. One particularly stood out:

Adywan,
I have been following your thread on ot.com for a while now and i would like to make a few suggestions to you about your so called revisited edition of A New Hope. I don't want to post in the forum because i would like to keep this as a private chat.

STOP IT NOW before you completely destroy a film that we all love with all the garbage that you are adding in. I will admit you have talent and the footage that i have seen so far looks pretty good.... for another movie. Why don't you spend your time and talents to recreate the theatrical editions so we can have a high quality copy of the version that we all love instead of this pile of [censored]. People like you make me sick and are the reason why we will never get a high quality version of the OUT. As long as so called fans ( and i use that term lightly for you) mess about with our childhood memories then lucasfilm will think that is what we want and it will be a never-ending DVD re-release with even more [censored]* done to it.

So i give you a choice.

1_Think about what you are doing and either stop now or carry on but keep this just for yourself and NEVER distribute it, or...
2_Ignore completely what i say and distribute it to your little band of [censored]kissers and let it spread and see what happens next.

I will make damn sure that if you chose option 2 then you will see it turn up on ebay for sale and i will make god damn sure that the trail will lead directly back to you. You won't be able to do another one without your precious Pc now will you when they confiscate it for illegal activities.

Oh and by the way don't think that i won't be able to get hold of a copy of this. you don't know who the [censored] i am on OT.com and for all you know i contributed to your so called "hard drive fund" ( yeh, as if. I bet the money you got went to something else.) so you because you said that everyone gets a copy you will never know if it will be me you are sending a copy to now will you.

You can listen to what i have said or just plain ignore it. Don't forget i know that you live in the Uk so don't think that it would be impossible to trace you to inform F.A.C.T.

It's your choice.

This was sent to me using a hushmail account which i tried to reply to and it looks like its been closed.

I do have to say that it has made me feel slightly uneasy. I just had to post this because i really need to ask you guys a couple of questions now.

because I have never attempted to do anything like this release before i'm really not too sure about the legalities of releasing this to the public. i won't be selling copies of this or making any profit from it and it will state clearly on the DVd that this is a fan created project and is not for sale, but can it be classed as pirating and if so can they confiscate my PC?

Also if he (or she) does decide to start selling it is it possible for them to set me up to look like i am involved in the sale? I will sate now that i will not be involved in anything like that and that it is not the reason that i am doing this release.

Its not going to stop me but i don't mind admitting that i am a little worried right now. I guess whoever has sent me these emails wouldn't post it in the forum so their username wouldn't be there for all to see.

Another thing, i can assure you that all moneys recieved from the kind donations went directly to the hard drive and nothing else. if anyone needs prove then i do have the reciept

I'm taking a break today now but will start back on the edit again tomorrow. If anyone can advvise me about things then it will be greatly appreciated.

I've never kissed anyone's censored. What kind of person is so insecure about themselves that they feel personally threatened when their favorite movie is edited? If you are not making any money on this project, LFL will probably leave you alone. Just like they have left all of our other fan edited projects alone. Soon as cash trades hands, thats where the problem begins. Carry on, I say. Don't let some creep get you down.

Don't stop what you're doing, Adywan. The person who sent you that email is a grade-A douchebag who has no business being on this forum. Just look at all the support you've received in this thread. Clearly the forum at large is behind you on this, and this one guy just doesn't grasp the point of why we're all here. Aside from the fact that his arguments are patently absurd (nothing you do in your edit will "completely destroy a film that we all love" and everyone but this idiot understands that), his intimidation tactics are frankly disgusting, and if his true identity comes to light I am certain he will quickly find himself a pariah in this community.

Keep up the good work.

I see some people suggesting adding a scene into ANH that would make Vader discover Luke to be his son BEFORE will see it in ESB. I’m probably in the minority here but I am not a fan of this idea at all. One of the reasons I lost total respect for Lucas are his unnecessary changes that add nothing to the films and greatly alter the story as we know it. If you tinker around too much you could ruin an otherwise masterpiece. I’m perfectly happy with Vader finding out Luke is his son in the time frame between ANH and ESB. To change this would take away from the strong impact and the greatness of ESB. Not every little detail of the Star Wars story has to be seen on the screen and told to us for me to believe or enjoy it. Mystery and unknowing are just as fun.

I know Lucas has screwed with the Vader/Emperor scene in ESB and it doesn’t make sense anymore. I’ve read his is one of your reasons, Adywan, for adding a scene to ANH. But I’ve figured out a way to fix that scene in ESB with minimal editing that preserves the original integrity it once had and therefore negating the need to add explanations in ANH.

I’ve watched the entire Vader/Emperor scene in ESB very carefully, shot for shot, and below I’ve listed the differences in dialogue and camera angles between the original 1980 version and the 2004 DVD version. I’ve also listed my own recommended changes to the scene which I believe would make this part of the movie look much better and not look so ridiculous as it does at present.

Vader
-1980: What is thy bidding my master? (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Emperor
-1980: There is a great disturbance in the force. (camera front view of Emperor)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Vader
-1980: I have felt it. (camera front view of Vader kneeling)
-2004: dialogue unchanged (camera front view of Emperor)

Emperor
-1980: We have a new enemy, Luke Skywalker (camera front view of Vader kneeling)
-2004: We have a new enemy, (camera front view of Emperor) the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star. (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up) I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker. (camera front view of Emperor)

Recommended Changes: Delete the underlined dialogue and camera views. These new lines add nothing and are just stupid. Vader and the Emperor obviously already know who Luke is. Use a camera view that’s facing Vader for the entire shot while the Emperor is speaking so we don’t notice the cuts.

Vader
-1980: Yes, my master. (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: How is that possible? (camera view unchanged)

Recommended Changes: Delete the underlined dialogue and restore the original dialogue from 1980. Again this new line is just retarded. Vader definitely knows Luke is his son and even speaks Luke’s name at the start of the film when the Empire finds the Rebel base on Hoth. I don’t think it would be too difficult to copy Vader’s original line from the Bonus DVD of the 1980 version and put it in your edit.

Emperor
-1980: He could destroy us. (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: Search your feelings, Lord (camera side view of Vader and Emperor) Vader, you will know it to be true. (camera front view of Vader kneeling) He could destroy us. (camera front view of Emperor)

Recommended Changes: Delete the underlined dialogue and camera views. Same explanation as before, the new lines are unnecessary and don’t make any sense.

Vader
-1980: He’s just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him. (camera front view of Vader kneeling)
-2004: dialogue unchanged (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up)

Emperor
-1980: The force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi. (camera front view of Emperor)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Vader
-1980: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally. (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Emperor
-1980: Yes (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up), yes, he would be a great asset (camera front view of Emperor). Can it be done? (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: Yes, he would be a great asset. (camera front view of Emperor) Can it be done? (camera view unchanged)

Vader
-1980: He will join us or die (camera side view of Vader and Emperor) master. (camera front view of Vader bowing)
-2004: dialogue and camera views unchanged

I know, Adywan, that you’re months away from working on ESB but if you read the whole scene through now with my recommended changes I think you’ll agree this greatly improves the screwup that Lucas did to this part of ESB and you won’t have to do anything to ANH to explain the new dialogue. These are just my opinions of course but I hope you will consider these changes and also not adding anything to ANH before you make your decision. If you still want to add a scene to ANH, throw it in as a bonus or as Sluggo suggested as an epilogue after the credits have rolled by but please don’t add it into the film itself. I know my vote most likely won’t count but I personally don’t want to know Luke is Vader’s son until ESB. Improving special effects or adding technical scenes is one thing, changing the storyline is something else. The original trilogy in this regard is perfect as is, it doesn’t need tinkering. Just my two cents. Thank you, Adywan, as always you’re doing a great job. The trailer looks fantastic.

P.S. That anonymous emailer has some serious problems. Don't let him sacre you, Adywan. I love the original theatrical OT but the Specials Editions really piss me off. If Lucas can screw around with the films then so can you. In my eyes all you are doing is fixing the special editions. Keep plugging Adywan we got your back.

I agree with Sluggo. Don't let this guy get you down. He makes it sound like once you release this it will become the definitive Star Wars movie (And while that would be awesome for any editor on this board, it probably isn't going to happen). If he is so upset about this one, why isn't he upset about every single fan edit out there? Sure, I've thought about it, and on a board where people are striving to get a good release of the original trilogy, they are excited about a Special Updated Edition with all new effects, it may seem strange, but who cares? It looks good. This seems to be a "Special Edition Done Right". Instead of an orgy of all-new special effects, it fixes the problems with the movie.
You shouldn't stop making this. A lot of stuff from here ends up on Ebay, just ask Jambe Davdar, or anyone who's ever release a Holiday Special disk. They all seem fine. Besides, I think it's safe to say we all legally own a copy of Star Wars (I have at least seven). Plus, some members here have patrolled ebay for people selling other edits and reported them. I think you'd ok.

Are we allowed to say "douchebag" here? Because whoever sent you that email is a douchebag! Now, personally, I've briefly mentioned that what Adywan's done is far beyond what I have considered for my edits, and for that reason I haven't commented much - but while I may not agree with what you say... well, you know the rest.

Actually, you know what? I'm offended! Was there nothing in my edit that raised this kid's ire?

Gorilla, thanks to a pointer from Sluggo I've been able to (almost) entirely recreate the original camera angles and dialogue of the Emperor scene from DVD footage - I'm only lacking the word "Luke" from Ian McDiarmid. But this is really a subject for another thread...

I'm sorry to double-post, but I have to follow up here. This really has me bent out of shape. If a threat-mail ever deserved a good fisking, it's this one...

I have been following your thread on ot.com for a while now and i would like to make a few suggestions to you about your so called revisited edition of A New Hope.

Suggestions is an interesting way of putting it. I would have said "empty threats made from my hiding place in the shadows of an anonymous email account," but that's just me.

I don't want to post in the forum because i would like to keep this as a private chat.

No, you don't want to post in the forum because you are a coward. Step out into the light, little boy, let us all see your face.

STOP IT NOW before you completely destroy a film that we all love with all the garbage that you are adding in.

Why would anyone who believes this canard ever participate in a forum devoted to fan edits? Mr. Coward, go grab your Star Wars DVD. You got it? Okay, I just made a fan edit where I replaced Luke Skywalker in every scene with a construction paper cutout of Jar Jar Binks, and all he says throughout the entire film is "weesa free!" Now... put your Star Wars DVD in your player... see that? Nothing's been destroyed, it's all still there. You're an idiot.

I will admit you have talent and the footage that i have seen so far looks pretty good.... for another movie.

So other films can be mutilated, just not his beloved Star Wars. That, my friends, is what we call a fundamentalist.

Why don't you spend your time and talents to recreate the theatrical editions so we can have a high quality copy of the version that we all love instead of this pile of [censored].

Yes, do that, because there aren't five other editors doing that exact same thing already.

People like you make me sick and are the reason why we will never get a high quality version of the OUT.

Yes, fan editors are the reason Lucas put out the OUT non-anamorphic. What a stunning insight! Please, elaborate...

As long as so called fans ( and i use that term lightly for you) mess about with our childhood memories then lucasfilm will think that is what we want and it will be a never-ending DVD re-release with even more [censored]* done to it.

Because if history has shown us anything, it's that George Lucas gives a crap what we really want, and he bases that on what one randomly-selected fan editor out of dozens does to his film. "Hmm... OCPmovie and the X0 Project are trying to restore the theatrical versions, thousands of fans have been screaming for years about wanting high-quality releases of the theatrical versions, but I'm going to ignore them and base the future of my movie empire on... let's see (throws a dart)... Adywan's edit." Yes, that's solid logic.

So i give you a choice.

Uh oh, Daddy's getting the belt...

1_Think about what you are doing and either stop now or carry on but keep this just for yourself and NEVER distribute it, or...

Because judging from the responses in this thread, none of us are interested in seeing it, and even if we are we shouldn't be allowed to, because we're the kind of people who make this idiot sick. Which again begs the question what he's doing here.

2_Ignore completely what i say

By far the most intelligent five words in this email, capitalization and grammar notwithstanding.

and distribute it to your little band of [censored]kissers

A little band that is comprised of what appears to be the majority of this forum's membership, go on...

and let it spread and see what happens next.

Oh goody, here come the threats. I can't wait to see what coward-boy has in store, I'm sure it's shudder-inducing.

I will make damn sure that if you chose option 2 then you will see it turn up on ebay for sale and i will make god damn sure that the trail will lead directly back to you.

That's a pretty weak threat, don't you think? How exactly do you make the trail lead back to the editor without making the trail lead back to the seller first? "If you manufacture your own Swiss Army Knife, I'm going to stab a kid with it and I'll make sure to tell the cops where I got it!" A brilliant criminal mastermind, for sure.

You won't be able to do another one without your precious Pc now will you when they confiscate it for illegal activities.

Name one fan editor who's had his PC confiscated. The Phantom Editor himself is known to the world by name, I'm sure the authorities could locate him rather easily. Still has his PC, last I heard.

Oh and by the way don't think that i won't be able to get hold of a copy of this.

Oh my god, you mean he actually has the means to obtain a freely-distributed fan edit? He must possess technology beyond the known limits of man!!!

you don't know who the [censored] i am on OT.com

Because you're a coward, right, we covered that.

and for all you know i contributed to your so called "hard drive fund"

Damn! How will we ever know?!?

( yeh, as if. I bet the money you got went to something else.)

Oh, that's how.

so you because you said that everyone gets a copy you will never know if it will be me you are sending a copy to now will you.

This and more on next week's episode of Mangled Grammar Playhouse.

You can listen to what i have said or just plain ignore it. Don't forget i know that you live in the Uk so don't think that it would be impossible to trace you to inform F.A.C.T.

If there is a human being with more free time on his hands, I'd like to meet him. Actually, I'd kinda like to meet this guy too, although I suspect forum rules prohibit me from elaborating on what I'd do if I did.

It's your choice.

Yes it is. Ignore this Cheeto-fingered child and carry on. If you stop working on your edit, the terrorists have truly won.

And congratulations, Mr. Coward, you are officially the most pathetic waste of human DNA on the Internet. How proud your parents must be. Please be sure to call upstairs and tell them I said hi.
