Info: Returned, and still working on XP77...

 (Edited)

I had trouble pulling it off before, and still haven’t gotten it right, but now I’m a bit more experienced and could pull it off better. Experience '77 is still in progress.

I haven’t made any releases yet because there’s some more stuff I’d like to add, though the basic work is done. I don’t really have the space to do DVD mastering right now, but I can certainly do OGM, and that’s probably what I’m going to be doing.

The video is that of the R1 bonus disc, as it’s the best I’ve got so far. I made a quickie AVI out of it, and it also provides me a nice copy of the 2.0 audio.

So right now I have the 1.0 audio as reconstructed from a 1985 PAL VHS. Is this still the best available?

I also have the audio from the DVD; this is the same as the 2.0 mix from 1984 and prior home videos, am I correct?

I have been thinking of the possibility of trying to splice together a best-of-breed audio mix, derived from a rip of the 1997 version. (I have the VHS. At this time I have no VCR and no plan to buy one.) This, coupled with some remastering of the 1.0 mix and cutting together with the OST, and I might be able to make something kind-of like “what you remembered, not what was there”.

An interesting alternative, would be some way to recreate the 1.0 mix in true stereo.

… man, I haven’t been here for ages…

No, the bonus DVD (known around these parts as "GOUT" - George's Original Unaltered Trilogy) contains the '93 remix used on the Definitive Collection laserdiscs and "faces" LD & VHS from '95.
Belbucus, the same fellow working on the mono mix restoration, has already finished a restoration of the '77 Dolby stereo mix (the one found on pre'85 home video releases.) He's captured it from laserdisc and digitized it using professional-grade equipment, cleaned it up, and synchronized it to match the GOUT video. See this thread for details:
GOUT DVD using 'Faces' PCM sound?
In spite of it's title, that thread also contains discussion about the '85 remix as well as the '77 Dolby stereo mix.

Welcome back!

It's not the 1995 mix, it doesn't have the 3PO line - the 1995 mix does. (the 1993 mix doesn't)

Ah, so that's what you guys were talking about by GOUT. Fair enough source, will suffice for my needs until better comes along...and I actually shelled out money for it for ANH...

My '95 VHS doesn't have 3PO's tractor beam line. Neither do MeBeJedi's nor dark_jedi's '95 LD preservations.
The '85-92 VHS releases have it. As do the '86-92 laserdiscs.

That's strange because I remember the 1995 VHS having it & I know my Row47 had it (actually verified that one), but Dr. Gonzo didn't (verified that one too).

I'd like to at the bare minimum have the option on one file (ogm, dvd, either way), as many "original theatrical experiences" possible...this means the 1.0 and 2.0 mixes...

I'm also considering adding some "but this is how *I* remember it!" extra tracks. Might not be possible, but maybe it can. And of course the 1985 mix, because that's what *I* grew up with. (I wasn't born until 1980, didn't see SW until 1994) And perhaps while I'm at it I can cut down the 1997 mix and cross it with the 1995 mix for a best-of-breed. (CLOSE THE BLAST DOORS! just like the 1.0)

Replying to myself because I thought of something to add.

In the beginning, I found it difficult to work with the materials I had, because my computer was a 700 MHz Celeron with 64 MB RAM running Windows 2000 (you may have heard my laments about the pitiful state my computer was in)... I'm using a 2.0 GHz Sempron64 with 512 MB RAM and Ubuntu Linux (somewhat customized to be more efficient with that 512 MB), so working on the project became a lot easier.

The video track I have at this time, is from the LE R1 bonus disc (your GOUT), and the Greedo subtitles have been reformatted for the best match to what I'm familiar with. I don't know exactly how they looked in 1977, this is based on my recollections of VHS versions and EditDroid's subs.

The audio track I am currently using is a composite. Top priority is to the 1985 UK TV capture, then to the CED, then finally to an audio track salvaged from an encode of Dr. Gonzo's DVD (1993 LD). I plan to replace this if a better track comes along.

I am currently also using the LE R1 AC3 as "the 2.0", not sure if it is or not, it's certainly not the mix I've heard on the VHSes, nor ROW47, and afaict matches details of both the 2.0 and DE, neither of which I can tell apart atm.

Most likely, I'll offer this as an OGM, and it will be possible to isolate the audio tracks, ac3 them and mux them onto vobbage if need be.

Well there's this theatrical bootleg, it's crappy quality but it shows the original subtitles. But I forgot what thread it's in.

But Belbucus is working on (see thread Mallwalker already linked):
DC/Faces 1993 mix (completed)
Dolby Stereo 35mm Mix (completed)
Isolated Music Score (completed)
1985 Mix
Mono Mix
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

Moll! It's been years. Good to see you back.

You have some catching up to do. Which version of the mono mix do you have? I've done 3 captures from the old tape; the first (released as an MP3 and FLAC) had some clipping, the second, synced up to the video from my laserdisc transfer, was a bit dull sounding. The last one, synced to the GOUT video, is probably the best until Belbucus delivers the restored version. (I made no attempt to reconstruct the missing sections or fix glitches, though).

And yeah, there was the pre-ANH bootleg with original subtitles, a couple of in-theatre recordings of the original 70mm soundtrack showed up (here and here).

The MP3, and an edit of the original FLAC (XP77:4EB used the former; the current working track is the latter, synched to CED, and then resynched to Dr. Gonzo, then resynched again to GOUT).

GOUT uses 1993 THX mix.

I'm kind-of waiting to see if a better video track comes along. Most likely the audio tracks I have will be obsoleted by the time X0 comes out, because of Belbucus' work.

I have started work on something possibly better, but it's not up to my standards right now, I might redo it - stereo version of the 1.0 mix...
