Since it takes 80 mins betwen downloads I only managed to download the PAL one, if you want me to take a look at the NTSC as well, let me know an I will tomorrow.

Well DJ, I must say that it looks and sounds great to me. I think the sound looks in sync with the video, might be of by 0,01 ms or something but it might be my ears that deceive me? I wanted to give you something constructive, but I don't find anything to criticize... so good job DJ, as allways! Looking forward to the whole thing!

I have another question though, does anyone have from either laserdisc or something of where the chapter stops should be on this,or should I just guess?
also if anyone has some nice wallpapers or anything that would be good for the dvd-rom folder, please let me know,I would like to add some cool goodies.

Plus I think I am ready to start doing the DVD's now,I have deleted ALL test clips and samples, and have finalised my avi scripts,so stay tuned for anyone that is interested.

DJ

Hey DJ,

I came up with 10 chapter points while watching a DIVX version earlier this week. Let me know if you're interested.

@ CW

well I just hit another snag, when I ran all those tests on the 4 1\2 minute clip all was fine,I did a PAL and NTSC version, and the audio was synched pretty good, but when I deleted all the samples and erased those lines form the avisynth script, and put in the line to the WHOLE file, now it wont open, its giving me crop errors, and size of video is already small,or something like that,so I wont be doing any encoding tonight,DAMN!

No Problem, here they are as I've noted them down - I'll try and get screengrabs up tomorrow.

START - In The Beginning
13:00 - "Nice Place"
19:10 - "This is humiliating"
35:15 - Under New Management
46:32 - Trouble at the lab
60:00 - "Who ordered the eggs?"
70:45 - "Power"
81:35 - "No Duck is an Island"
90.11 - Dark Overlord
99:12 - End Credits

Nice even number when it comes to menus. Let me know if you want to put in more. Mixture of film quotes and chapter-esque descriptions.

Ahhh, it was nothin' compared to all the work you're putting in. Thanks for the ack, nonetheless...

Note to all: I double-checked the copy of the SkyTV capture that I have already and it DOES have the "tongue in cigarette lighter socket" reportedly cut from the UK "New Breed of Hero" version! It DOES NOT, however, have Bev discovering the condom in Howard's wallet... (which is unwrapped, BTW - so much for hygienics on Duckworld)

Hmmm... On closer examination, the "tongue" scene is there, but it's been edited. In the "New Breed of Hero" version, they cut to Jennings and the tongue is already extended. In the US version, you see the tongue come out of his mouth, which causes Bev to scream, and exclaim something to the effect of: "Ewwww! That thing's gross! I'm gonna puke!"

I checked out DJ's PAL sample - looks to be in synch to me. The AR of this is about 1.85:1, am I right in thinking that the OAR was 2.35:1? Has it ever been released on laserdisc in its OAR? EDIT - Just read the beginning of the thread, looks like this is the best AR you can get)

For some reason, when I tried DirectShowSource() with the TS sample DJ sent me, it ended up repeating nearly half the file. DirectShow was using the Cyberlink TS splitter and H.264 decoder included with PowerDVD 7.

So here is another method you could try:

1. Use xport to demux the TS file into raw H264 video and AC3 audio streams. You will need to rename the MPV file to H264 and the MPA file to AC3. (This method will cut the beginning of the audio so that there will be no need to guess an audio delay later on.)

2. Run AC3Fix on the demuxed audio.

3. Use AVC2AVI_MOD to put the H264 stream into an AVI file.

4. (Install ffdshow if you don't have it already). Enable H264 decoding in the ffdshow VFW configuration.

5. AVISynth script as posted previously, but replace DirectShowSource with AVISource("filename").

6. Open script into CCE and encode as normal.

7. When muxing/authoring, the video from step 6 and the audio from step 2 should synch up with a 0ms delay.

Nice method Moth3r! I didn't know about xport
Can't explain why it wouldn't load up for you, maybe the cyberlink splitter? or the way the TS sample was cut?

dark_jedi, post up your script, lets see whats happened.

CW I used the 1 of the versions you posted, this is what I used on the PAL sample that I did,and worked great, but when I change the script to the whole movie instead of the clip, then it wont load, and after a few minutes I get errors.
here is what I used:
directshowsource("C:\Duck HD.ts", fps=25, convertfps=true)
Crop(0,0,0,-8)
lanczos4resize(720,576)
ConverttoYUY2

also thanks alot slark for the chapters and scans, very nice, this will ALL be excellent in the dvd-rom folder,IF I ever can get this damn thing encoded, but at least I got Night of the Comet encoded overnight.

thanks M, if I cant get this to work I will try that method, but this worked on the samples, but just cant figure out why not on the friggin movie.

OK I think I figured something out,the first 4 seconds of this file has no image or sound,so I just figured what if I took off about 4-5 seconds and then save,so I did,and wallah, now I am able to open the file up,so I will start encoding tonight,so in short,I think there was something screwy in the very beginning of this file that was NOT letting avisynth and cce open this correctly, and giving errors.
thanks again to everyone, and I hope this encodes OK,then on to the NTSC version,I will do the PAL first.

NP, DJ - looking forward to the result, just like everybody else. I'm just sorry I couldn't find a copy of the film trailer, or a better copy of the music video to contribute...

Hey this is just a shot in the dark, but did anybody pick up that Brazilian DVD? Apparently, it's got English subtitles, so if somebody did get their hands on one and could rip those for us, that would ROCK!

I didn't know of a music video. Odd. As for the trailer, could you use a low-res version of it from say youtube or something and recreate it at all? Or is it impossible to do that (ie. deleted material, voicover work, other bits and pieces)?

The 'Dolby's Cube' music video, featuring Howard and Tim Robbins and a giant egg, is available on Youtube here.. The trailer itself seems a bit more elusive...

I MIGHT have the trailer recorded from 'Entertainment USA' on Betamax. Unfortunately I'm getting my player serviced and won't have it for a few weeks so I can't check just now.

Hey dark_jedi
I'll have to borrow my friend's turntable so that I can rip the songs to my hd. I would use mine but it needs too much maintenance.
I'll post an update on the progress of ripping the vinyl to my hd in lossless format.

You can download the film's trailer in wmv format (which Nero easily encodes) at:
http://www.karcreat.com/HowardTrailer.html

There's also a better quality than Youtube version of the video at:
http://www.karcreat.com/HTDMP3Download.html

(Karcreat's site has some MP3 stuff as well, including the title song)

There were a ton of radio ads for this as well, the angle was "Who's Howard?" to try to stir up some interest about the character to people unfamiliar with the comic. There was also Topps candy Howard's and a read-along storybook I believe. Any and all of these things would be fun to add to the DVD if we can track it down.

Also, there was the Commodore 64 game, which was actually a sequel to the film. I used to have this in the original box. Here's some info:
http://www.lemon64.com/index.php?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/reviews/view.php%3Fid%3D709

Here's the great promo ad for the game: http://www.lemon64.com/index.php?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/reviews/view.php%3Fid%3D709

Here's an article about Howard-related subway graffitti in 1980s New York City: http://www.mcny.org/collections/painting/pttcat116.htm
(You can see this briefly in the film Style Wars as well)

The way I look at it, is let's load this thing up with as many special features as possible, since we probably will never get an official release. Maybe even include the "I Love the 80s" VH1 segment about the film that featured Lea Thompson as well. Text

If it's of any help for this, or any other project, i have a very nice setup for recording vinyl LPs.

I have a harmon kardon t-50 turntable with a nice new Ortofon cartridge/needle, a Harmon Kardon avr520 receiver, a nice high-end phono pre-amp (of which i can't think of the name right now), and a Pioneer Elite PDR-99 standalone cd recorder (considered to be one of the best cd recorders ever made).

If someone wanted to, they could send me a record and i could make a very nice, straight burn of it. I have about 5000 LP's, and about 2000 45's, I worked at two record stores and I'm completely anal-retentive about my records (my wife can't touch most of them) so you could send me records knowing that you wouldn't have to worry about their safety.

If anyone is interested in my help, just pm me and I'll give you my address.

Hey DJ,

How did you crop the beginning of the the TS? I've notice that everything I've used the AVISynth script with has got the number of frames and therefore the running time completely wrong - like in the region of 16 hours!!

I'm not really doing anything 'funky', just:

DirectShowSource(howard.ts)
AssumeFPS(23.976)

Any suggestions?

I came home from work, only to find my aspect ratio knackered. Damn software keeps forgetting my settings!

Hmmm... The WMV of the music video is 320x240, 5.35Mb. The FLV of the music video is 320x240, 13.2Mb. I'm not an expert on video encoding (and of course there may be differences in audio bitrate), but are you *sure* the quality on the WMV is better than Youtube's?

Thanks for the link to the trailer and the other stuff. Scans of the 77-card Topps set have been procured (from ComicCovers.com)

Zeromancer and reave:

The only missing audio track at present is the 4 min 52 sec "Howard the Duck Mega Mix". (Yes, even a copy of "Don't Turn Away" with Lea Thompson's vocal - not used in the film - was tracked down!)

(Hey reave - weren't you the guy in "Diner"?)

Shaping up into quite a special SE!

I can't stand it! I have the said 12" vinyl of HtD in near perfect quality. If there's anything I can do I would love to. I have never even listened to the vinyl. However, I really would not feel comfortable sending it to anyone else. I'm sorry, reave, it's not that I don't trust you, but it's my favorite record (next to my Mad Twists Rock & Roll record, but it is really scratched up). However, my phonograph is nowhere near the quality of the single itself. It's a Sears model clearly made sometimes in the late seventies or eighties and up until August of 05 it was only used to play Raffi albums. But I just want to make sure I get some good feedback before I lug the whole thing into my living room and mess with all the cables...
