ROCKY BALBOA

I just came back from a real movie. I haven't seen one of these in a long time... and I'm sorta speechless...

Where to begin?

Well... why do I call it a real movie? It had heart. No tricks, just (to me) good writing, good acting, good old fashioned heart. It's very clear what its message is to me and it, as corny as it sounds, taught me what it takes to be a real man. I've read rocky's been called the everyman, heh, but I think he's beyond that. He personifies goodness. Basic, indomitable goodness within us that when pushed to the limit comes roaring out and ready to fight for what's right. While sitting there in the theater, I felt like I was watching myself on screen because that's, and as corny as it might seem again, how tough it's been for me too in my journey through life thus far. My greatest regret so far is that I've not been as strong as rocky when life gave me lemons. I hope to change that. I want to... damnit I do...

God bless you, Sylvester Stallone. Thanks for the ride, man.

I went to see this on opening night. My thoughts are:

Better than 4 & 5 (paint drying is better than 5), not as good as 3. The movie is quite depressing for the first half, and Stallone does do a great acting job in addition to his work behind the camera splicing in flashbacks. His nemesis, Antonio Tarver is a real-life middle-weight fighter, and it shows because to me he looked soft in the middle carrying so much weight.

The storyline with the girl from the old neighborhood is fun to watch (there are some laugh out loud moments), but does nothing for the plot.

Paulie is cool as well as tragic and it was good to see both him and Dutch again.

Yes, the whole idea about Rocky's reasoning for going back speaks to me, about getting older and not having finished "slaying the beast", as it were.

The training montage was fun to watch, especially with the original music and they kept it real regarding his age.

The "commentators" from ESPN made my hair hurt, as it was painfully clear they were "reading" their lines, especially Larry Merchant, and the whole charity angle of the fight was waaaay too contrived.

Stallone is definitely showing his age, and should think twice about taking his shirt off again if he does another Rambo movie.

All in all, a surprisingly good return to a franchise that made up a significant part of my youth and has provided many fond memories. Definitely worth catching in theaters.

well you know, do what you want, but to me it's truly a must-see kind of movie for any rocky fan. I absolutely recommend it though obviously I can't speak as a non-rocky fan so whoever isn't is totally on their own in deciding. It's a sequel and I viewed it as one, even by watching rocky before going to see it and the two films I guess compliment each other very well. So to truly get the most out of this film, I think you have to watch the first movie. That's just a suggestion for anyone considering seeing it. It works fine without it I'm sure, but for the best experience, watch the first before seeing Balboa.

Wouldn't it make more sense to support the good movie and burn the bad ones? (IE most of the original series of flicks)

I support Rocky 1 and grudgingly tolerate Rocky 2. I will not support or grudgingly tolerate Rocky Balboa or the other ones.

I might be seeing the movie tomorrow. It looks great based on all the reviews and fan reaction.

Comcast's ONDemand free movie section had all 5 movies, and I've never seen them before, so I went ahead and started watching them. i'm almost through the second one, and they're pretty darn good. I'm excited to see this new one, though there are so many movies out I want to see, I can't guarentee I'll be seeing it any time soon. I'm never behind on the new movies usually, but there's a few from early December I have yet to see. I think Balboa is near the top of my list though.

Thanks for the mini-review Wesyeed!

When I first heard about this movie, I rolled my eyes like most other people did, I'm sure, but after hearing what's being said about it, I and most definitely going to see it in the next few weeks and I certainly think I'm going to like it a lot.

As for the negativity against it.....I understand where it's coming from. It seems Hollywood is really out of ideas and they're just recycling old ones and doing a really shitty job of it too, so I understand why some people don't even want to look at Rocky Balboa.

We all expect great movies and sometimes we find them in the most unlikely places. I thought for sure this movie would bite big time and was just an aging actor trying to get into the spotlight by milking the role that made him what he is, but I forgot one thing....Stallone's movies have always had a lot of heart...even some of the bad ones. Who's to say Rocky's journey had to end after the first one? Some of the Rocky movies were a bit much (4), but even at their worst, they were still VERY damn good. I used to really dislike 5 and I've been thinking about it a lot lately with this new one on the horizon.

There's a scene in 5 between Rocky and Adrienne where Rock is all pissed and disappointed at how everything's turned out and Adrienne tells him that he won all those fights with heart. That scene just keeps sticking in my head for some reason. It never did before, but it does now. Don't know why. I think maybe some have become so cynical of everything that's come out of Hollywood that they can't recognize a good movie when they see it. I've certainly been that way, but I'm giving this movie a chance. Rocky got a second chance at the title, didn't he?

Sorry for the long and somewhat corny post.....the Rocky movies have always touched a nerve with me. There's something about them, ya know?

And I'm not getting soft on Hollywood either....they still make shit films.....and Lucas, the SE, the PT, etc still blow chunks no matter how many second chances they get.

I'm surprised to see this is getting good reviews. Myself and everyone else rolled their eyes at the mention of the film, but every review seems to be saying "who would have thought that this is a good film?" I love the original Rocky, a great low-budget 70's classic, but the sequels were all pretty crappy, even if they are enjoyable in a sort of guilty pleasure kind of way. I was willing to see this film just to laugh at the ridiculousness of it, but i am hoping it will at least honour the heart of the original film, which apparently it manages to do. I'm sure this is not a great film but the general consensus seems to be that it is a good one. I'll be seeing it soon, if only out of curiosity. Unlike say Indiana Jones IV, this film never had much of a legacy to live up to since the series had basically been run into the ground since 1978.

IMO the movie isn't bad, quite good actually for what it is...a sequel of a sequel etc... this movie does have heart and it has a message. Go see it with an open heart and a good attitude...let the movie entertain you without over analyzing it and you'll have a good time....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I've never seen any of the Rocky movies. Eye of the Tiger is a pretty cool song though.

My favorite Sylvester Stallone movie was "Oscar" (I thought he was very funny in it). Demolition Man was okay. Judge Dredd sucked . . . otherwise, I've not seen much of his work.

I would recommend the first Rocky film above all!!!

Next, see First Blood. It's the first Rambo movie....it is so worth it for the end....always kinda moved me since my Dad was in Vietnam and told me how the troops were treated when they got back home.

Here's some more....

Rambo 2 - damn fine movie, but senselessly violent....who could ask for anything more?
Demolition Man - a great movie all around.
Cliffhanger - a bit of a mindless action/stunt movie....I loved it.
Cobra - great just for the lousy acting, bad dialogue and cliched cop stuff. It's so bad it's good, I swear!!! My favorite Stallone film actually.
Over The Top - Rocky meets arm wrestling.....very cheesy movie, but I love it for some reason.

Man, Stallone movies were great back in the day!!! Between those and the Ah-nuld movies, you never got bored in the 80s!!!

Hey, and don't forget Deep Throat, the very first movie that made Stallone famous! ^_~

I must be missing some sort of context.

Well, yes, obviously you are. And that's because I mistakenly wrote down the name of the wrong sexually-explicit film. I meant to write Party at Kitty and Stud's (renamed The Italian Stallion), which Stallone was in.

I just saw it today, and I loved every last minute of it. It was a perfect end to a great series, and sparked a huge range of emotions from comedy to sadness, and pretty much everything inbetween. Most of all, it was a movie with heart, and lots of it, not made for money, but for giving people a good time at the movies and to give a classic series a fitting end, and it shows on screen. Lots of movies today are good, but most of them are made soley for money, and it shows. This has been a pretty good movie year, but for me, no movie this year reached the level of quality of Rocky Balboa. Most movies this year just didn't have the heart Rocky had. I'm really glad I caught this in theaters. My only real complaint about the film is the commentators in the end. They were kind of annoying, and could have been ommitted. Of course, fake commentating in movies only works when its parody, like in the film Dodgeball. When films try to do real commentary, it never works. Other than that, an excellent film.

Finally saw it last night!!!

What an excellent movie!!! It had it all....a good story, heart and soul!!! Most of all, it was touching. I felt for all the characters, expecially Rock. Even Dixon wasn't really one dimensional like most of the fluff characters that get thrown at us from Hollywood.

Stallone still has his touch and I hope he brings some more good movies our way. Hollywood would do good to watch this movie and take it to heart. This is how films USED to be made...with substance, heart...not CGI-laden, boring, nonsense story garbage.

Thanks Sly!!! You're still the man!!! Now knock my head off with a good Rambo movie!!!

My friend hadn't seen this yet, so I went with him and saw the movie again. Usually, when I see a movie a second time, I like it less. Usually a lot less. But with Rocky Balboa, I actually liked it just as much as my initial viewing or more. The thing is, that's what happens with classics. IMHO, a classic is a film that never gets old, that is just as good every time you watch it. It has some things wrong with it, sure, but you don't realize it because you are swept up in the experiance. Wizard of Oz is not a classic because its been aronud for so long. It's a classic because every time you watch it, you enjoy it as much as you ever did. There are things wrong with it, sure, but you'll never notice it because you love it so much and are lost in it. I feel this way about the original Rocky, and definately Rocky Balboa, which is definately an instant classic. It's the only Rocky sequel that really lives up to the original, being nearly as good, if not as good. You just don't see movies like that any more. A classic is a movie with so much heart you can forgive its quirks and embrace it in full, and movies just don't do that anymore. Thanks Sly, for giving us a real classic in a time when we don't see many, if any at all.
