I was thinking of converting Star Wars movies to SWF. That way, they’re not so large in size, and can play on anyone’s computer if they don’t have video codecs. I got a new laptop and am right now converting the Original Star Wars to AVI format, which I’ll then convert to SWF.

Here’s what I plan on doing:

The EditDroid Trilogy
The 2004 Trilogy
The Prequel Trilogy

I’m uploading them to MyDataBus, but for preservation efforts, where can I put them anywhere else?

EDIT:
I couldn’t find a free SWF converter. The converter I’m using puts the company logo in the corner of every SWF I save. It’s unobtrusive in 2.35 Widescreen, and some people here could make it anamorphic…

Both. But that has nothing to do with this.

Star Wars 1 has finished converting to AVI. It's being converted to SWF now...

EDIT:
Actually, I'll convert from DVD to WMV to SWF. That way it will be quicker, easier, and smaller.

All right, SW has finished converting to WMV. Now it's converting to SWF, which will take about 5 hours. It's decent quality, and the GeoVid Demo Logo is unobtrusive.

So that's 1 movie per day...

EDIT:
Once I finish uploading, I plan to post the link on this site. Is that all right with the mods? Because I really don't want to get banned again...

I doubt they would be happy with you posting it on the forum, it's still a copyrighted film.

Well I'll try it first. Just so you know, I don't plan to make any money off of this. This is just for preservation, and I'm going to convert all of them so people can see all the changes between the films without having to go through all that effort and confusion.

But if the mods delete the link, I apologize for any inconvience, and I'll just convert the films for myself, because my old desktop still can't read any video files except flash.

So you plan on doing nine movies all together? That seems ambitious for you. Here's hoping this project doesn't piss you off about Star Wars half way through....

Heh. This will be a WHOLE LOT easier. All I have to do is sit around and eat chips while my computer does all the work! It will only take nine days to finish the whole thing!

This has nothing to do with preservation, but look, if it makes you happy, you can post a link to a short sample (say <5 mins) to demonstrate what kind of quality you can expect from the SWF format.

I would expect anyone who wants the full movies in this format to convert their own copies of the '04, '06 or prequel DVDs.

Think of a Flash game. Now try watching a movie like that. That's what SWF is.

Whenever you watch something on YouTube, that's SWF format.

The blinking GeoVid.com "Register" logo is cool. I want that on all my SW vids from now on.....

Well then that's it.

1. The SWF is taking WAY too much memory on my system.
2. I can't find ANY decompressors.
3. The mods don't want it on here.
4. The WMV looks better anyway.

So I'll just convert everything to WMV and keep it for myself.

Wow! You came pretty close to following through with you word this time ZigFried. Well, better luck on that next time. I am glad you were able to come out of this deal with some awsome quality wmv files though. I might go ahead and convert my own trilogy to ShockWave flash. Seems like a worth while thing to have around. Never know when you might need them.
