help opening RAR files

I was just wondering if someone could give me some general help (I'm a dummy suffice to say). I'm trying to open some RAR files, but when I click on them, it says something like windows doesn't recognize the file type. I know I need some sort of archiver, so I downloaded wrar361.exe - I also have "hjsplit" which I apparently need. Basically if someone could give a walkthrough of what to do that would be incredibly nice.

Download and install WinRar from www.download.com. Once it's installed, you can right-click any .RAR file to get a list of options. Plus you can right click ANY file to make a RAR archive out of it. Dirt simple program.

Well I have WinRAR, but it was a trial version and has expired. Will it still work? The RAR files are video files, but I don't know what player to use. So say I download the files again, do I...

a) drag them into WinRAR?

b) right click on the RAR file? If so, what do I choose?

c) where am I extracting them to?

what about the hjsplit thing? The guy seemed to indicate it was necessary.

However, if the archive contains a video, and no compression was applied when the archive was created, then the files may play in a media player. VLC is your best bet.

Try right-click, extract to, then extract to anywhere on your hard drive.

Not necessary; hjsplit is a different program and will not work on RAR files.
