Out of interest, what's the framerate of these Super 8 reels? 18 or 24fps?

My film tech had this to say about it:

"The leaders are marked "Sync at 18 fps" but this is not true, they are synced at 24 fps which is the a standard for Pro Super 8 sound. "

OK, so my next question is: why is your clip interlaced? I guess it's a limitation of the scanning method used?

I'll look into that Moth3r, I may have clicked the wrong export setting in Vegas.

There are a number of video frames that appear to be made up of multiple film frames (check some of the TIE flybys). This makes me believe that the transfer was not done frame-for-frame, but instead was shot at full speed with a camcorder or something. Any confirmation/explanation/comments?

Quite correct Karyudo. While I initially wanted to give it the full scan treatment, sadly no one with that sort of equipment would touch any copyrighted stuff with a 10 foot pole. Hence I had to settle for a less than stellar transfer.

Doesn't your projector allow the reel to be played back at a (s)lower speed?

I don't know dude, I didn't do the capture, I just contracted it out.

That brought tears to my eyes. I don't know. Something about grainy, washed out super 8 transfers takes me back. Looks like I'll have to break out my old projector.

Don't put the tissues away just yet buddy, I've just uploaded another clip from one of the ESB reels, and sadly, yes the interlacing artifacts are present on my 'master'.

I have a Super-8 telecine unit (Workprinter) that does frame-by-frame capture. I'm using it for restoring a bunch of old films owned by the international and U.S. table tennis federations (haven't yet been contacted by the intergalactic table tennis federation). I'd love a shot at these films when your tech is done. And I'd do it for free. sgordon@hardbat.com

Puggo, just out of curiosity, what's the longest reel you can fit on the Workprinter?

The Workprinter can handle up to 400-foot reels. Surely enough for the consumer-grade excerpts. But for an anamorphic super-8 print? I don't know - I have to admit I haven't worked with anamorphic super-8 before.

Sorry! I just discovered this forum. I never realized how the fan preservation efforts had expanded in the past few years. Seems my old bootlegs have been surpassed many-fold. I'd thought of trying to do a capture of my LD, but now that I've read the XO site, I can see there's no point to my doing that. Your films sound fun, and worth preserving.

Where was I in 1977? I was 17 years old. Saw Star Wars 5 times the week it came out, in 3 different theaters. I'm eternally jealous of anyone who saw it in 70mm. I remember Bob Wilkins showing sneak previews of it several months prior (that's where I think I too saw Luke miss the grappling rope once before catching it). But I digress...

This project sounds terrific. Like most here I was a video kid, but messed about with super 8 in college enough to know how special it is.

Just to put super 8 in a commercial context, here's an ad I found in a UK mag from the time (1978!)

sluggo cannot wait to see your classic trilogy trailers disc.

These projects are sweet!

Boba Feta great work on the super8's.

Did you team up with puggo on these or did he take up the project?

You have me and Puggo mixed up on the 8mm films. Although I'm doing the Trailers project. And for the record, I think I was here first. Now only if I could get Zebonka to switch...

I meant to say boba feta on the 8mm project but you say it's puggo?

I just supplied the reels to Puggo and designed a cover for him. He did all the hard work there. I still may release my version at some stage, but it does need work.

[Edit:] My version will be PAL too, but sadly the transfer suffers from some interlacing artifacts. (That's the trailer you probably saw.)
Cheers.
