Neil, you're one of the most knowledgeable chaps on the board here, I wonder, what way did you vote on the poll for the OUT '07 re-release?

Is this a joke? From everything we've been told, it is the original theatrical version. Sure, it's not a remastered anamorphic release, but it's essentially true nonetheless. It's a bad quality transfer from a laserdisc master with a possibly recreated crawl, but it's still the original.

What I mean is, original sound effects that were not tarted up (notably in the cell block sequence), blaster hits that were toned down (also notably in the same sequence). These changes were already made before 1993, I believe. Unless the film is restored to 1977 conditions in every aspect, it is not the original theatrical release. And one false advertising claim leads me to question other advertising claims.

.

Well, from the slideshow we've seen on the official site, everything seems to look just like it did in 77. I personally don't know of any effects shots that were changed before 1993 (that doesn't mean there weren't any) and the only sound changes I know of are what I've learned on these boards (don't know if they were changed before '93 or not). I've personally only witnessed the horid effects and sounds of the 97 SEs.

Didn't have time to peruse all the many pages of this thread, but I sure didn't like what I saw on Page one...I did catch "the dome test" though. You know, that R2-D2 comparison. That looked pretty damn good...

I'm still deciding weather or not to buy these. If I just had some way of knowing that next year's set would have these...

Neil, I don't know who you are, but it quite one thing to make verifiable observations about differences in films, merely as a consumer ... and entirely another thing to make definitive statements about product releases of entertainment corporations, as a consumer.

That said, I am also willing to contemplate that retailers broke up the sets on their own. But there is no evidence of that, beyond your word.

Calling people 'delusional' does not help your credibility, in my eyes.

Neil is right. The DVDs have never been marketed or promoted individually before this release. There have been a number of retailers that have broken the boxed sets into individual titles and sold them this way (my local Blockbuster has done so), but they've not been officially offered for sale in this manner prior to these releases. I deal with studios and PR companies daily, and Fox has never treated the films as individual titles before now.

Also, notice that the bonus disc of "Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope" says "Star Wars Episode IV A new Hope" instead of just "Star Wars".

maybe the lucasfilm employees only did that to get them past Lucas.

because what's on the Disc is pure retro: No Roman Numeral or "Bonus feature" subtitle in sight!

I think the menus reflect the respect the Lucasfilm employees have for the OOT-or as far as lucas will let them express it.

you mean, where did I get it?

it's a parody of "The 'Burbs" with Tom Hanks. fitting, since it features Carrie Fisher.

I voted "No". I'd love to be wrong.

Thanks everyone for supporting me here.

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

Neil, I agree with you. The only time I've ever seen these in the stores individually was at Blockbuster in the used sections. The individual 2004 DVDs don't even have UPC codes on them.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

Could you expand on that a little perhaps? What's your reasoning?

Just the impression I get from LFL. Everything is about tieing into each other right now, which the OT really doesn't do, especially Star Wars.

LOL - who shat first!?!

Sadly, i voted "no" as well - i believe we'll see more & more revisionism in 2007, and beyond, to bring the OT "in line" with the bloody prequels.

Still, it's a miracle that the stubborn old bugger has allowed these discs to sneak out - but these bonus discs really are the bone thrown from the feast table that is Luca$film, and i do feel like a dog for pre-ordering the first movie.

Maybe given time (decades?) "every dog will have his day..."?

Until then, i'm gonna invite a few friends over, get some beers and pizza in, & watch the "bonus disc" that is STAR WARS

Do you think that the originals will ever recieve proper releases?

Maybe when George is cold and six feet under, much like we are now finally seeing Brando's scenes from Superman II.

That would be my guess, unless he leaves strict instructions to the contrary. So, how does everyone think these new DVDs should be reviewed? Should the scores be based on the originals only, or both the originals and SEs? I'm leaning towards the first.

I say the first also; the SEs have been reviewed by many sources a dozen times over the last few years.

Great review, Mentasm.

I still can't quite decide whether to get them or not. I definitely want them, since it's slightly better than what I've got and it's a legal, pressed copy that will last. But they're too blasted expensive . . .

Hmm.

After reading the DVDActive review, I think I'll be picking these up. I've been on the fence, but I do have to admit, the screencaps presented there look a helluva whole lot better than I had anticipated.
