In many ways, I feel as though we are to blame for this whole fiasco. We demanded the O-OT on DVD, but we didn't specify under what conditions we wanted to see it. Now we're getting it, and we don't know whether to take a mile with this inch or just settle with it.
I understand your point but I must respectfully disagree. There is no way that in 2006 we should have to specify exactly what a DVD should contain to a company that was (is?) the forefront of movie technology.
Just to elaborate further, it seems like a foregone conclusion that a DVD released in 2006 would be presented anamorphically. Why should anyone have to ask for anamorphic or any other features we presumed were industry standard?
Imagine the required wording on THAT petition:
"We the undersigned would like a DVD release of the Original Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy. We would like the movies presented anamorphically, shown in color, with appropriate menus, with dialog in English by the original actors, with the same John Williams pieces originally written for the movie, pressed (not burned) onto a standard-size DVD disk, contained in a durable case, shrink-wrapped, sold in retail stores or online for a reasonable retail price."
Even then, Lucasfilm would still find a clever loophole just to screw with us.
