Was there an ESB arcade game?

Author
Time
I remember spending every quarter I could scrounge on the Star Wars arcade Game. And later I remember begging my mom to take me grocery shopping with her because K-Mart had the ROTJ arcade game. I just don't remember ever having seen a ESB arcade game.
I do remember the terrible ESB game on the Atari 2600 though. That was horrible.

Thank you for answering that one for me. Did you ever play it and if you did was it any good?

You bet your vectorized ass there was an ESB arcade game!

It was essentially the same game as the vector Star Wars game, only you flew a snowspeeder on Hoth, defeating AT-AT's and chicken walkers (yes, I'm old school) and the Falcon through the asteroid field.

To my knowlege, the game only was released in a standup cabinet, unlike the enclosed cockpit of the Star Wars game (which was later on also manufactured as a standup).

You can still find the ESB cabinet in older arcades, or places like bowling alleys and other such places.

I'm sure if you look around this game has been ported to MAME - in fact, I could be wrong, but like the Star Wars game I believe it was released in different versions for the PC or consoles - essentially an arcade port instead of the classic 2600 game. Incidentally, the 2600 game was used at many K-Mart's and Woolworth's around the World to demo the Atari, for it's groundbreaking graphics.

Keep an eye out for the new and improved http://www.temusb.com/ which is under renovation, but offered up loads of information on all Star Wars games, and where to find ports and emu's.

Yes, Atari did make one. I never saw it outside of Las Vegas though. I think the original was so popular nobody wanted to convert the cabinet to install the sequel. Making the ROTJ game without vector graphics and first person perspective was big mistake, IMHO.

Hmm...how hard could it possibly be to make a ROTJ vector game?

Speeder bike antennae, a couple of trees, some digitized Ewok chatter and good times result.

Also, am I the only one who wants Sega to port over the Star Wars Trilogy arcade game to consoles? The 360 has to be capable of running it - you know, the one which let you pick the film and then you went through the key parts ie: Death Star, Hoth, Endor and then had a 1st person battle with Vader...that was a frigging quarter muncher, I tell you.

Lucasarts needs to do a retro compilation, much like Midway, Capcom and Namco have done ad naseum.

I loved the ESB arcade game. I remember playing it to financial ruin (as a 9 year old) when on holiday on the Devon coast. I later got it for my Amstrad CPC 464 home computer. Great days!

Atari 2600 ESB was horrible? Never! I love that game. One of the best for the Atari 2600, IMHO. I still play it sometimes.
As for the ESB arcade game, I've played it on MAME before. Its not bad. IIRC, ESB was never really released seperately, just as a conversion kit for the original Star Wars game. That also really hurt sales, and I think it was also released very late, around the video game crash, and that also made sales low. So it is quite rare today. Fortunately, it is avalable through the wonders of emulation.

Yeah, I see what you mean about it just being a conversion kit. On the picture of the cabinet that MagnoliaFan posted, there is an image of the Death Star and the Rebel pilots flying towards it. Yeah, I definitely remember that in ESB.

You notice in that one screen shot how the view is in the center of the Falcon when the cockpit is on the side?

The 1998 Sega game "Star Wars Trilogy Arcade" is in MAME, but doesn't work properly yet. (And when it does work, you'll likely need an 8GHz CPU to run at full speed! It runs at about 40% on my X2 4200+).

I also once played "Star Wars Arcade", a 2-player game from Sega released in 93/94. This one was pretty rare (based on the same platform as Virtua Racing). I don't think MAME does this one very well either.

The 1980's Star Wars arcade games are also included hidden away in the Gamecube game Rebel Strike.

My article of how to get these games at The Emulator Strikes Back site is down at the moment but I could soon upload the details here if there is any interest.

However, the best way to play these is with MAME which works on pretty much any PC with a Pentium or newer processer.

If anyone needs any info on how to play these, once again I can upload something here if there is any interest.

Oh I LOVE that game! My friend's mother works for Hershey and they have an employee day at Hershey Park every year a week or so before the park opens to the public. During this day EVERYTHING is free, including all the video games. I swear, I spent hours playing that game LOL

Agreed.

I want Ballblaster!!

I would spend hours playing it on our Atari 800. If I had more time, I'd probably play it even now.

Ballblaster was pretty good. Some other good additions to the Lucasarts greatest hits would be the space/flight sims of the late 80's-early 90's they had. Anyone here ever play X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Their Finest Hour:The Battle of Britian, or Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe? They were the best in the genre back in the day.

While commenting on the Falcon's cockpit being in the middle of the plane, In that game, your lasers can shoot down probe droid transmissions. I didn't know that transmissions were something that you could shoot down.

I managed to find it for a Sega 32X emulator, after a helluva lot of searching. It's pretty good, but not all-out awesome like the wire-framers.

Did they rename it for some reason? It was always Ballblazer when I had the C-64 and Atari 7800 versions. Pity the 90's Playstation version bore little resemblance to it's namesake. Would be fun to play Rescue on Fractalus again too.

I miss the old games too.

"Anyone here ever play X-Wing"

I loved taking on the Star Destroyers at the end of every mission (No invulnerability, no unlimited ammo.) Some levels, I had to go through tens of waves of hundreds of tie fighters. Once the SD ran out - easy pickin's.

It looks like the same game, so I have no clue why they renamed it.
One thing I liked about it was that how many points you scored depended on your distance to the goal AND the size of the moving goal.

No, you most certianly are not. That is a game I have always wished to be able to play without spitting out quarters every few minutes.
