How do you upload your own icon?

Everytime I try to change my icon image to a custom one from my computer I get this message " Your attachment could not be uploaded due to either a file error, or your file is not a valid image (JPEG,GIF)." All the images I have tried are the right size , number of pixels, and are valid JPEG files. What am I doing wrong?
