Well, the timecode OSD in the divx is higher and slightly shorter than the OSD in the screenshots from newsletter#2 so my guess is that it is faked.

Other than that the videoframe does look quite the same and the quality as far as I can see with this high compressed divx is rather similar.

So nice try Lucas, nice try...

Ehh.. indeed, the quality is pretty bad. Lot of compression and the downscaling hasn't helped either.

All the above are missing the point.

Giddy up! Any judgement of video quality aside, the timecode is SMPTE-style, and therefore looks like it can be very useful in referencing individual frames of the film! Whether this is X0 Project official stuff or not (and I'd have to imagine that somehow it is??) this looks to be a great, great tool for hardcore preservationists!
and to quote my own post back in October 2005:

This file is not meant to whet your appetite for the quality of the X0 transfer. It's a reference, a useful tool for those in the preservation community that might need it. Fake or not, as long as the reference is there, it doesn't matter. (Why has it taken 8 months for this to be released? )

If there is only one version with timecode, and the screenshot in newsletter 2 is a cap from that, it is a fake indeed. The time code bar is not the same. Now you can REALLY sleep tight MeBeJedi! But even better: no sleep till ANH is done!

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

looks like somebody had to much time and had to fake, a fan release!

I'm anticipating this is the real deal. I think it would give people confidence to know it is. I wouldn't trust the timecode of some sort of hack-y fan release, but (after a quick examination) I would trust the numbers from the X0 Project.

I can't wait until there are audio streams and subpicture files that are all synched to the X0 Project timecode! For that matter, I can't wait until the offsets to the "official" (i.e. X0) timecode are known for all other releases. Imagine how nice it would be to know that if you took the audio from TR47, added 2.345 seconds of silence at the beginning, cropped out 0.678 seconds starting at 1:02:04.234, that it would match up with the X0 video, say? This sort of standardization would just kick ass.

I think there will be a certain irony come September, when one of the first orders of bidness with the OUT release is to derive its X0 Project offset numbers, just as with any other fan edit/preservation before it.

It may be a cheap-o DivX version, but this version could be the gold standard in all things preservation. Which is exciting as all hell.

Karyudo, while I'm not sharing your optimism about how great it is that this has been released to the public, I do share your opinion on how great a tool the timecode can be. Your analogies are spot on.

The more I look at this, the more I'm sure that this is in fact our version and not a fake. We did create a low bitrate file for sharing between ourselves, and it was slightly different than the screenshots you see in the newsletter.

A lot of time was spent trying to get the timecode right, and we went through a couple different ways of creating the SMPTE timecode and boxes around the text. The version you saw in the newsletter was the second to last iteration. The one that has been uploaded to usenet was from our final version. Ironically, the screenshots from the newsletter actually show the incorrect version number, as version 3.03 was our final version. I must have had my AviSynth files mixed up when I created those screenshots.

So in short, the file that has been uploaded to a.b.starwars was created by us. It is not a fake, but it is a very low bitrate DivX encode of our original DC capture. It was not created to show off the quality of our capture, but to use as a tool for referencing every frame of the film. Somehow the file found its way into someone else's hands and was uploaded to usenet. I still do not know how that happened, and I am more than irritated at the moment. The more I think about it though, the more I feel that perhaps we should have uploaded this ourselves a long time ago. At any rate, it's out there now for anyone to use.

Here are a few screenshots from my unresized, uncompressed AviSynth file loaded in VDubMod:

I don't think those screen caps look that bad at all. The color is accurate unlike the official dvds and the last two with Greedo and Luke in the Falcon look really clear, without murkiness or color bleeding. That is the best images I think I've seen of those parts, especially Greedo. Considering that is not corrected and knowing what you guys can do, I think your final version "will be a day long remembered."

I'm surprised you have to post this within days of the original posting on Usenet. Your news provider must not have very good rentention. Asking for fills at this point is bad form; you should instead be quietly figuring out how to get the files yourself, using a better provider. I'd check out Giganews or Easynews. You should be able to get what you want quite cheaply.

Well, I'm not sure what the problem is. My retention is horrible for sure, but not that bad. I actually grabbed the same file 3 times and it was incomplete all 3 times. Everything around it was just fine. So I was hoping maybe some kind soul would help me get just that file, not even necessarily on a.b.sw. Last time I had a problem like this, Movealong was extremely nice and sent me the file. But I guess I should keep to myself if it's bad form. And I shouldn't ask for help. In a forum. Where people help each other.

That's what the par files are for.....learn to use them instead of fretting over one bad file.

Indeed. To not be able to fix the post at this point is impossible. Nobody needs to post anything more -- and doing so while PARs are available only serves to push older useful stuff off servers! This is all the help needed. From a forum. Where people help each other. Even in the wrong thread.

Was it...... MeBeJedi... or was it Zion... or was it that strange Rikter guy who seems to upload everything? Or maybe it was Lasermon... who else is conceivably involved in this project? Who is the "mysterious" 3rd member? Is it a registered user here??

Oh Zion, may I ask - just out of curiosity for the benefit of those who don't subscribe to your news letter - do you, or could you post a link to your newsletters in this thread when they're released? Well back to roaming for me.

Why make more work for Zion, when all you have to do is go sign up to recieve it for free? That kind of defeats the purpose of actually SIGNING UP for the newsletter? Don't you think?

Also I was not poking fun at the X0 team when I posted the famous frame that MeBeJedi works on....you however seem to be....not only that but you have the balls to start accusing members of the X0 team for the leak of the time code vid? Not too smart pal.

Explain your weird post if you would please....

I'm not going to put much thought into boris' post. All I'm going to say is that we haven't yet figured out how the TC print was taken from us, or who it could have been.

Future newsletters will be available online. I'll get around to posting the old ones eventually. It's just that at the moment I'm busy editing a film, color correcting it, fine-tuning software that will keep track of timecode entries, creating menus, cleaning up footage, and attempting to keep people updated about it.
