The New Doctor Who — Page 2

What does the appearance of the tardis have to do with wheither or not Tennant is the ninth or tenth doctor? Also, the tardis does change its appearance when the Doctor regenerates.

BTW: I think they should have left the tardis alone. I prefer the look of the tardis from the original series.

The look of the TARDIS has nothing to do with what number Doctor Tennant is. I'm just saying that it should have changed when he changed. Right now we have a new Doctor but the TARDIS looks the same as it did before he regenerated.

Of course, I have only seen the first episode of the new series, so perhaps it changes later in the series, or over a period of time. Maybe someone else can tell us?

No, there's been no change so far.

I don't recall there being any tradition of changing the TARDIS to suit the Doctor. I think it just changes when the designers get bored with the current design.

That's not to say that it isn't a good idea, though, I quite like it!

Re. Earth-bound Doctor Who, I was disappointed by the Cybermen double episode. A few minutes in I was thinking "oh great, he thinks they're on a parrallel Earth but it's going to turn out to be Mondas".

Nope.

Earth.

Again. Well, the "real" Mondas disintegrated in 1986. I wonder if there is a "parallel" Mondas?

Well yes. But this was retconned in "School Reunion", where Sarah Jane Smith enters the TARDIS and remarks to the tenth Doctor - "you've redecorated!"

Seeing as the TARDIS is actaully alive and not just a ship, it makes perfect sense and is a cool idea. If it isn't Doctor Who cannon then it should be, and I hereby claim copyright on the idea.

Damn...

So how about the Master?

Actually, I wonder if Jamie Foreman might be good. I think he could pull off the role. Only thing is he was in a recent Doctor Who episode - 'The Idiots' Lantern' - as the Dad who was informing on his family and friends.

I just watched the second episode of the second series where the Doctor goes back to 1879 and sorts out a problem (won't spoil it for those who are yet to see it). But the episode reminded me of a question that's been floating around for a while - If the Doctor is fighting aliens or whatever who are trying to take over/destroy the world IN THE PAST, why do we (and his sidekick Rose) live in a world where the invasion/destruction never occured? We can assume that until the Doctor went back and intervened, the aliens/monsters/daleks/whatever were successful in their plans and it was only a visit by the doctor that, to quote another great sci-fi/time travel show, 'put right what once went wrong'. Are we living in a world where the doctor has already fixed/thwarted these things and therefore they never happened as far as we are concerned? Or is he visisting alternate timelines? Or is it merely something the writers didn't think of and we should just ignore?

Er...

Errrrr...

What if, right, new things come up in the timeline all over the place, creating new ones all the time? And the Doctor keeps finding these new things and dealing with them according to what their consequences will be?

Or something...

I've always looked at it like this...

It's time & dimensional travel so the future and the past are always changing and in flux.

I've watched part of an episode for Dr. Who for the first time yesterday. It featured the tenth doctor, and on that part of the episode the doctor and Rose were locked with this lady on a room, and telling two other people how to get rid of an alien who was invading their apartment - a man in a rubber suit. They managed to explode the alien by throwing a mix of some oil and eggs on him, as the doctor quickly discovered what was the secret weapon... *sigh*

After I posted my question I remembered an episode of Quantum leap where Sam leaps into one of JFK's bodyguards. He fails to prevent Kennedy's death, but Al tells him that in the original timeline Jackie Kennedy also died. Of course, in our World, she did not die, so we live in the world that Sam's actions created. But!! Did we always live in that world? Or did we live in the 'Jackie is dead' world and then Sam leaped back and stopped that so our world history, and therefore our memories, were instantly altered around us? Similarly, in Back to the future 3, when Marty arrives in the old west and Doc tells him he gave him explicit instructions not to come to rescue him, shouldn't Doc already have been expecting Marty and know why he came back to save him because it was young Doc who helped Marty get to the old west from 1955? Shouldn't Doc have that memory of sending Marty back to the old west?

This is why I love/hate time travel discussions.

That's sort of the point of Dr Who, Ric. It's cheesy, tongue in cheek, rubber suit crap, but that's why people love it. It's a British thing.

The idea of Doctor Who, however, is not cheesy, it's a great concept, and it has the potential to be one hell of a serious sci-fi show, but then it would be just another American sci-fi series, and not Doctor Who.

And it has been since 1963 and I hope they keep regenerating in the UK!

I also wish that I had some back-up downloading the complete series from the torrents, I'm getting the William Hartnell seasons right now, I'm at 57.7% with 195 hours left and I still have 7 Doctors to go!

Seeing the 'Rise Of The Cybermen' double-episode in the current series made me want to see 'The Tenth Planet' from the Hartnell years. I think the only episode I've ever seen with the first Doctor was the very first episode, screened on the 25th anniversary in 1988!

I like the new format but miss having stories played out over a few episodes, rather than over in one as it is now.

I just expected something different, in a more serious tone... Gonna try to watch it more.

Ric, you understand the British more than any non-brit here I think, so I'm sure with a few more viewings you will 'get' Doctor Who. I even still groan and say to myself 'I can't believe I'm watching this'. from time to time.

I've been looking into this as well. Too young to remember the Hartnell period, but I had the Target paperback of The Tenth Planet. Unfortunately, episode 4 has been lost, so it's unlikely to ever be seen again. Eps. 1-3 may be available as bootlegs, but I've not seen them.

Did you miss that I'm downloading all the Hartnell episodes? It even includes a reconstruction of the lost 4th episode! (s04e02p4 The Tenth Planet (reconstruction)) - I'll hook you up with the episode once the 34gig download is complete!

I might have talked a few local friends into helping me DL the episodes so I hope that I can get them all sometime this year!

Where are you getting them from? I'd love to see all the Dr. Who and how its changed over time. I remember the Tom Baker years when it was on PBS years ago. I'd love to see the other doctors in action.

I think the whole idea of the Doctor regenerating is brilliant, because it solves all the plot holes regarding the actor's age, and the time the series is set in. Kinda like James Bond, the early movies must not be cannonic with the recent ones because of the time span. Unless Bond also regenerates himself when he dies.
