Yeah I've heard it... Not good indeed...

The fact that I'll have to watch tomorrow's game with Japan alone, at home, while working, dosen't necessarily mean I should do it sobber, right? I'm allowed to drink a little bit, right? I mean, I might have a meeting call after the game, and I don't think they'll mind me crying and singing "Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling...", eh?

the mexico/portugal game is great so far. 2-1 for portugal. mexico needs a tie or a win to make it to the second round. lets see if they can do it.

By the way, those familiar with The Simpsons know that Mexico versus Portugal is THE game to set who is the greatest nation of them all!

That's no good.
On the other hand, it might be a blessing in disguise...

In 1990, England were forced into changing their formation due to the injury to Bryan Robson. We did quite well that year as I recall.

And that single clip perfectly sums up the American view of football. But let's not get started on that again. Everyone in this thread understands the real beauty of the game and it's not our duty to educate the rest of them.

i actually found the argentina/holland game kinda hohum. i switched it to the ivory coast game. i know they had no way of making it to the second round, but, damn! what a great game. maybe next cup they'll make it past the group stage.

what does everyone think of the 2nd round lineup so far?

Germany/Sweden
Argentina/Mexico
England/Ecuador
Portugal/Holland

Germany and Sweden will be the first difficult match of this World Cup, and a challegenge for Germany. As Germany is playing at home, I bet they'll win a close victory. Argentina and Mexico, that is going to give a victory for Argentina, I hardly belive Mexico will surprise us this time. England should be able to find its game and beat Ecuador easily. Portugal and Holland is really tricky to guess, mostly because of Scolari as Portugal's coach doing wonders with the team (he's the best coach in the world nowadays), but Holland should win this one.

I pretty much agree with everything Ric said. I'd love for England to wipe the smile off the Argies' face (again), but if Mexico can do it for us, that's fine. I don't think they will though.

An England Germany final would be great. As usually happens in an important England/Germany match it will go to penalties, but this time England will win. Well, that's what I hope anyway.

EDIT: This is totally random, but I'm bored and I was thinking: Let's say a striker beats the keeper (dribbles round him perhaps) then blasts the ball at the goal. It's dead on target, and going fast. The nearest defender is too far away to get a foot to it. It's 100% going to be a goal. But then the defender decides if he can't get his feet to it he's gonna try a different tactic and he dives across the goalmouth, saving the ball with his hands. The ball doesn't go in. What would happen? Would the ref give the goal? Or would he give a penalty for a handball in the box? Considering a penalty has a chance of being saved, it doesn't seem fair, but what are the rules on this? And has it ever happened?

Penalty, and the defender gets sent off for a deliberate hand ball to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Yep. Red card for the defender and a PK.

Think the USA is gonna beat Ghana? Ghana is clearly the much better team. At best, the US will get a tie, but that ain't gonna be enough.

It would be a red card, and a penalty kick, which the goalkeeper COULD save. So, if you really need to avoid the score and there's only seconds left on the clock, this could be a desperated solution for it, although it's unlikely that such a scenario would happen, in which the only real way to do save the ball is grabbing it, instead of kicking it out - unless he really has covered the goalkeeper with a kick and the ball is coming too high but really going to reach the goal. Nowadays, it's rare to see a defence player so behind due to the offise line strategy.

Shame the US have gone out - you'll always have the draw with Italy to be proud of !

Glad there is an African nation in the last 16 and whatever the fall-out from this game, the beating of the Czech Republic was a magnificent effort.

Very dissapointing for the US. Just like their first match, they didn't seem to be playing with any sense of urgency, all the while knowing that they HAD to win in order to advance. They have major scoring issues as well. I'm not sure you could consider anyone on the team besides maybe Johnson a striker.

But sadly once again I come away frustrated at this game. There's no way the foul that led to Ghana's penalty kick was even a foul. Horrible call all the way. The guy takes a dive and is awarded the game-winning goal. Then near the end of the match, another guy takes an obvious dive to milk a few more minutes off the clock. And this is considered good strategy? Give me a break. There's just something about a guy putting on a show and pretending he's in agony that I don't think I'll ever understand. How that can be seen as perfectly alright in the eyes of the entire world just baffles me.

In the end though, Ghana surprised everyone and advanced to the next round. What a great story for a country that's never even qualified for the World Cup. Kudos to them.

Lots of people consider the obvious unfairness that is still possible within football (non US) some kind of its charme. This is why there is no second master referee, no video device, no goal referees. Personally I think the acting should be stopped by all means. I want a fair an attractive game.

It's not seen as alright. I see it as bullshit time-wasting and it sucks. I hate when teams do that and I think the ref should sort them out. And speaking of refs, that guys should go back to Dentistry because that was no way a penalty. I'm not blaming the US defeat on a bad ref decision though, because they haven't played well this whole tournament, with the possible exception of the Italy game. I think Bruce Arena needs to start looking for a new job.

The quality of referee-ing has been exceptionally poor given the status of this tournament. I shouldn't be able to count the bad calls on my fingers and toes, but the ones I've seen, I could probably count them on mine and those of my friends who've been watching it with me.

Faking injuries needs to be cracked down on. HARD. I'm sick of all these so-called professional teams with their polished dives (as if it hasn't been part of their training regime). Seeing Brazil play my own country last week, I have to say I became extremely disappointed in a team that I used to have a lot of respect for. They *were* better than us skill-wise, but attitudinally and professionally, they were just pricks.

Anyway, Australia's playing Croatia this morning (4am for me - I'm gonna be so dead at work). We can win or draw this one to get through, but I think we stand a good chance of winning. There's a massive twist to this match, check this out:

Quite aside from the fact that a place in the round of 16 is still within reach for both sides, the links between both nations, and squads, are strong and several, with no less than seven Socceroos - captain Mark Viduka, Jason Culina, Tony Popovic, Josip Skoko, Ante Covic, Zeljko Kalac and Marco Bresciano - boasting Croatian ancestry.

It’s not all one-way, either, with three of the Croatian squad - Josip Simunic, Joey Didulica and Anthony Seric – not only having been born and raised in Australia, but schooled at the famous Australian Institute of Sport that produced, among others, the likes of Viduka and Harry Kewell.

Consequently, several friendships are set to be put on the line. "It will be quality, personally for me,” Viduka said this week. “I obviously know all the players in the Croatia team and it would be a personal pleasure to score, put it that way."

And easy. Things are going as I've planned. Brazil will beat Ghana, Spain, then lose to Holland, and beat Italy at the third place match.

I'm sort of rooting for Japan (just 'cos thery're the underdogs), but it's nice to see Ronaldo back in the World Cup. Seeing him score bought a smile to my face.

Pathetic. Simply pathetic. How is Brazil to win a World Cup by playing like that? So far, things are going as I've forseen. The only way Brazil can win this cup is to join the dark side and end this conflict once and for all. That is, cheat. Like the argentineans do.
