I just watched this movie the other day and it was amazing. Thank you for doing this Garrett. So have you sent a copy to Alex Williams yet and do you think he will show Richard?

Ok, new rebroadcasts of the newest Recobbled Cut on GBS-TV ( www.gbs.tv )

June 8th - Thursday, 9:00 PM Eastern
June 9th - Friday, 11:00 AM Eastern

More broadcasts as needed by demand. I'm hoping the 2nd screening will be suitable for those in the Europe, Asia, and Aus/NZ.

Still, it's only a long commercial to me. Seeing this reduced to 320x240 is laughable, but it at least gets people interested in the film. Not to mention it persuades people to either download the DVD or ask ocp for it.

Oh I noticed that the music played after the witch puts on her stethoscope and starts walking is Tico Tico by Abreu. I don’t remember now if it is played anywhere else in the film. I know it doesn’t really matter now I just thought I would add that for Everyone’s edification.

Just got ahold of this. Skimming through it before I burn it, and already it looks more than worth the wait. Excellent stuff OCP. When and if I get my anime club up and running, I'll definately try to work a showing in.

Neat to heat that. Too often I wonder if what we really need is a club for a more general interest in animation than just "anime" as a word. The often used term of anime is actually more of what the Japense would use to refer to "cartoons" themselves, and doesn't really reflect what most Americans tend to equate it for Japanese cartoons.

True. In Japan, it means animation. In America, it means Japanese animation. Makes some sense I suppose. I've always considered myself an animation fan. Though I use anime fan for short.

Watched the film, then the commentary. Considering I only intended to spot check the burn, this is quite a feat. All in all, given what you had to work with, an superb job. Granted, some things could've been smoothed better, partically soe audio, but there's no helping it.

This is the third full length commentary I've heard in full. These things rarely hold my interest, but the nature of the project made it more interesting I suppose. Also possibly the first time I've watched a film two times in a row.

Yep, I keep reediting it, and they keep changing it back to be wrong.

Thanks for spotting the witch music!

I haven't sent a copy to Richard yet.

By the way ...

Very sorry to those waiting for the DVD. I was forced to move house, and then move back, this past week. I was without internet for an entire week. I am still without internet. To add to the insanity, my computer broke down completely - it won't turn on - I've sent it in for repairs. But my list of orders is on that computer. Supposed to be fixed on monday. (On an unrelated note, the people I live with decided to start stealing from me. I'm dealing with a lot right now.) So, just wait and I'll get to ALL the orders very soon. Gonna deal with some tomorrow. I have 99 unanswered emails right now, and I'll get to those too, as soon as I can. Monday sounds about right ....

I do have good news - incredibly good news actually - kinda went nutty from joy today.

One JP Cummings has sent me what was my holy grail for this project, something I was searching for the entire time I was doing my edit but couldn't find.

A widescreen version of Fred Calvert's The Princess and the Cobbler. This is the version which still has the witch in it, the big one eye pull out eye shot, the march of the one eyes ... all the good stuff that Miramax cut out. It's not Dick's cut, but it's got more of the good stuff in it.

The VHS tape is 1st-gen, direct from the source. Not a copy. Quality is pretty damn good. A little dark maybe, but damn. All those amazing widescreen shots in widescreen?

The VHS has timecode, sadly covering the bottom middle of the picture. Nothing I can't work with.

Interestingly, this version is titled "The Thief and the Cobbler," showing that when Miramax bought Fred Calvert's version, they intended to restore its original title.

The VHS also has a trailer I've never seen before. It's also titled "The Thief and the Cobbler" and is somewhat similar to the Arabian Knight trailer we've seen, yet completely different. It's based on the "Princess" version of the film (including the witch), and clearly the Arabian Knight trailer was based on this, but this version is far less stupid and rather interesting.

All I can say is ... wow.

I might do another version of the film that incorporates this material, we'll se. At any rate, this is wonderful to see.

Isn't that always the way - you finish work and suddenly the thing you've been looking for turns up.

Still, it would be great to see the final shot in the film in the way it was meant to be (before Miramax decided to go add in more BS to ruin the effect), as well as the witch scenes!

Wait wait wait...so all that work you did, aligning the full frame shots over the widescreen workprints...this VHS makes that all unneccessary...? Damn...but then again, realize that while the VHS footage is better than the workprint stuff, it isn't as good as the DVD footage you laid over the workprint...so how would you incorporate it? Would you redo the layering effect, or would you simply use the widescreen VHS, and accept the drop of quality in the center of the picture?

Nope. The DVD is still better quality than the VHS, not to mention that the VHS has timecode on it.

Basically, I'd do it all again and it would look better this time. =)

If that means better quality for the pull out in the One Eye camp and for march of the One Eyes sequence, I'm REALLY excited. When you have time, could you post a screenshot or something?

Ok, I'm sure what I'm about to ask has been asked about a gazillion bajillion times in this thread, but... um... *insert lame newb question here* How/where can I get the DVD and how much does it cost? *end lame newb question*

I'd probably find the answer if I looked through all fifty-some pages of posts, but.... I'm... lazy. Can you forgive me? CAN YOU? I could even dramatically throw myself to the ground and beg for forgiveness if you'd like... but I prefer mercy.

Thanks and apologies.

Thanks... I'm trying to get it but the darn thing is downloading at about 3 kb/s... at this rate I'll have it in about 2 weeks (if I get it at all). Do you think maybe it's the client I'm using or maybe something about my computer? Or has it downloaded that slowly for everyone?

Sorry... I just got SO excited when I saw I could download it and then it was quite a downer when I realized it was downloading one teeny tiny fraction at a time. In addition to lazy, I'm impatient! Not too many virtues here, I assure you. What a fine addition to your community you must consider me... heh heh...

Yeesh, not helping myself out here. Anyways...

So... my questions remain. Thanks and apologies.

With the number of seeders on it...give it a little time, it should pick up. How much are you uploading? For public torrents, it's usually a good idea to allocate at least 20-30 kB/s for upload, as it takes quite a bit going upstream to get the downstream connection to work well. If you try and choke your uploading, you won't download jack. As far as clients, I only use utorrent or bitcomet, and those work nicely.

Here I was excited and now it looks like yet another version in the works?

OCPM: I appreciate your fanatical devotion to this film, and yet I feel very sorry for you.

This movie really is cursed and has become a project without end for you as well.

I believe I'm u/l at about 35 kb/s but that's only an estimation because, alas, the workforce owns my soul until 5... so my best guess will hafta be good enough until I get home. The slowness COULD be due to the fact that, in my house, there are 4 computers all linked together in a wireless network and the bandwidth is probably like "whooooooooooaaaaaa I'm cloooooooooogged".

Yeah, I've seen someone else in the thread mention using utorrent. I'm currently using the one you get from bittorrent.com and I dunno if that's good or bad or what. I'm considering switching. I may lose whatever I've already got in the transition but considering I've only managed to snag about 4%, no biggie.

By the way, thanks for being nice to me, tweaker. I'm always apprehensive and kind of ashamed when I show up as a newbie asking dur-dur-dur questions. No one killed me and I appreciate that.

Are you uploading stuff from your other computers? If you're taking up more than 90% of your total upstream bandwidth, you'll slow your download speed WAYYY down. So your network as a whole can upload 30 kB/s, than you can't upload at more than 27 kB/s (including all the computers in your network). And the official BT client ain't bad, but it's kinda outdated and a pain in the ass to deal with. But anyways, play with your bandwidth a bit and see what you come up with.

Well, I upped the u/l limit and now I'm d/l at about 20-25 kb/s, sometimes 30. Makes me happy!!

ANOTHER question (and feel free to kick my ignorant butt to the curb if I'm asking too many dur-dur questions): Will the final movie show up as a wmv or avi or mgp file because... I'm not seeing any one of those in the folder at the moment. When I've d/l torrents before, there usually exists a file of the aforementioned format that SAYS it's, you know, 500mb or 2 gigs but it won't ACTUALLY contain all that data until the transfer is complete. With this torrent, I'm not seeing the same thing. Am I going to have to find software to piece the movie together for me or am I missing something?

If you don't want to be bothered by my idiocy I completely understand, but... um... if that's the case... could you point me in the direction of someplace where I COULD ask this question without pissing anybody off?

Thanks and apologies.

Spotted at Ain't it Cool News ...

THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER - tanned, rested, & ready
by Harry Weinstein June 6th, 2006
02:53:40 AM CST
Biggest animation news of late for me has to be the "RECOBBLED CUT" fan-edit-restoration of this that is drifting around. I have been waiting for this for a long long time. True, this isn't exactly the million-dollar Roy Disney-powered restoration I was hoping for, but it is better than any other option for viewing the film that there has ever been. It's all about the War Machine sequence. Oh my God. If you've seen only the Miramax or Aussie cuts of this, you're missing out. It's on YouTube, but that resolution simply doesn't do it justice - track down the DVD image on bittorrent or Usenet. Do what you must, but get RECOBBLED CUT. This has been a motherfucking public service announcement.

Meanwhile, the collection of DVDs continues to grow.

Dave West has sent in another collection of Roger Rabbit ephemera.

DVD - Roger Rabbit Reviews - Watch critics like Siskel & Ebert gush over what was seen as a major milestone in film. Many unconditionally positive reviews. Richard Williams talks to MTV briefly. Michael Eisner introduces a mediocre copy of the CBS TV version of the film - the infamous "pig head" version.

And of course there's this:

DVD - Thief and the Cobbler - Calvert Cut - timecoded widescreen VHS dub .... with rare trailer! Copy of this very rare unreleased widescreen VHS version of Fred Calvert's "Princess" version of the film. 1st generation, beautiful, with timecode covering part of the picture sadly.

After two months I'm STILL waiting on certain parties in England to send me their DVD transfers of these, but I expect them pretty soon hopefully ....

+ One Pair of Eyes: Dreamwalkers - Idries Shah documentary that may include footage from the Nasruddin film and a discussion of it with Richard.
+ Richard Williams Commercials: The Best Ones/Warner Bros. Thief Licensing Trailer
+ Animating Art/I Drew Roger Rabbit/Secrets of Toontown better copies

So we'll see on that. Hint hint to those reading.
