A simple question regarding muxing AC3 and M2V/MPEG

I am no newbie when it comes to video editing and that sort of thing. However, I am sick at the moment and rushing to complete a project for a friend. Can someone please point me in the direction of a simple utility that can; mux 2 AC3 files with an M2V video stream and output to a MPEG file? I tried MPEG Tools in TMPGEnc XPress but it only muxes 1 audio and 1 video track. Virtualdub does what I want - but only for AVIs.

The important thing to note is that the video isn't DVD-compliant. I just want to do this for an MPEG file to be viewed on the PC. I don't want to have to re-encode or scour through complex programs. There's gotta be a program made solely for this purpose, I know it. I just can't find it, wherever it is.

Can somebody help me out? Thanks in advance.

I don't have a simple answer, but I can think of one possible method that might work.

The free DVDAuthorGUI includes a small command line program called mplex.exe. As far as I can tell, this is used to multiplex video and audio streams into an MPG program stream before the disc is authored. The MPG file is only temporary, and is deleted on completion of the authoring.

Apparently mplex comes from the MJPEG tools project, however I can't find much guidance on how to actually use it and what command line switches it takes.

However, you might be able to do it like this: start DVDAuthorGUI, select your MPEG video and AC3 audio, add your second AC3 track, start the authoring. If you can stop the process after the muxing stage, you might be able to retrieve the muxed MPG file.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.

In the meantime, anyone have any simpler ideas? Feel free to post.

I'd think "mplex -?" or "mplex --help" should display usage info.
The most basic form is "mplex -o output_file input_file1 input_file2 [input_file3 ...]"

I used the Linux version of mplex to mux Moth3r's mono_ntsc.ac3 with video ripped from Doctor M's RTW.
That was DVD-compliant, of course, but [my version of] mplex has a command-line switch "-f" to specify output formats, including generic MPEG1 and generic MPEG2 among others.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Here is a good program for muxing your files and it will export it as a DVD.

Muxman

mux 'em with DVD lab and export as DVD.
Then get the mpeg file with DVD decrypter or SmartRipper.
I've done it a thousand times....
And now, for your feature presentation:
The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

Don't think this would work if the files aren't DVD compliant.

A lot of these suggestions (if not all), reequire that the video be DVD-compliant. I tried the DVDAuthorGUI method but was unsuccessful.

After that, I went into Premiere and output a DVD-compliant video file. Then I used Muxman to mux the video with the 2 ac3 files. So, now that it's a VOB, how do I change it to an MPG without losing the 2nd audio stream?

And thank you all for your help.

"Don't think this would work if the files aren't DVD compliant. "

Moth3r's correct. DVDLab won't import non-compliant MPEGs, but I'm sure some programs will. Otherwise, we wouldn't have DVDs with MPEG4 video.

I think you could import it into Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD and export it as an MPEG-2 file and you should keep both audios.

Moth3r, that program seems to be exactly what I need. Thank you so much.
