Help Wanted: 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' Laserdisc Footage - censored scene

 (Edited)

Can anyone supply me with a short video clip of the well-known censored footage from the original version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
I’m considering creating a fan edit, and this would be good to include.
Also anyone can throw in ideas or suggestions.

My stance on revising fan edits.

You could also throw in I Drew Roger Rabbit, the trailer (which is hidden on the pan & scan version of the new release) and something from The Thief (trailer perhaps - either Arabian Knight or my trailer).

What is this, a Pig Head edit? I think it was MarioXB who said he had the original TV airing with the pig head scene and other bits intact.

We've been gathering hours and hours and hours (10 discs so far) of material related to director Richard Williams, so you can always steal something from our set I suppose ....

I lost you there what new release?

There was an old one disc release you probably forgot about.

And yeah, I have a tv airing that has the pig head sequence back in. It's fullscreen of course, just like the footage on the DVD, but I believe it gets cut off on the DVD. I thought about transfreing the LD to DVD, but there really isn't anything missing that you can't see without going frame by frame, is there?

I'm also just got done making a Dick Tracy DVD that has Roller Coaster Rabbit shown before it, like it was in theaters. I was looking for a Dick Tracy trailer, but I don't think there are any availiable anywhere.

If there is anything different about the UK PAL VHS release, I can soon get it on disc for you.

Hmm. I thought EVERTYONE had the two disc Vista Series release from 2004. I never bought the original release myself and almost forgot it existed.

9/28/1999 Original One Disc Release: widescreen, trailer only

2/2/2004 Two Disc Vista Series: all kinds of extras, widescreen full screen, etc.

Somehow I missed the fact there was a newer 2 disc release. I must have been abducted by aliens because I do not know how I missed that.
It seems that Disney redid the infamous scene on the 2nd DVD release by re-animating Jessica completely, covering her totaly. In the 1st Dvd they just put underwear on her. But you all knew that already, didn't you?

I used to have the LD of this (the 3 disc? I think version), but I think I lost it in a move. The Vista Series is great! It has the shorts that were included with Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Dick Tracy and A Far Off Place.

Hal 9000. If I find the LD and no one else has it that actually, unlike me, owns an LD player, they can borrow it to transfer. You of course need to re-incorporate the pig head scene, somehow converted to widescreen. I also think it would be cool to have an option to play "Somethin's Cookin' " without the rest of the movie.

One of the shorts has a background gag censored too. All three came out on an LD that was suddenly recalled because of "glue problems". Of course, some dealers were not buying that baloney and there are copies still around.
There is a screencap here.
The weird part is the VHS version was never recalled. It wasn't widescreen and THX though.

2/2/2004 Two Disc Vista Series: all kinds of extras, widescreen full screen, etc.
Actually, the 2-disc set was originally released March 25th, 2003. DVD Empire is probably listing the new date due to it being rereleased with a price drop or something.

This has been brought up a couple of times in the past. Darth Enzo was planning a transfer of the uncensored LD.

If anyone would like to summarise what formats WFRR was released on, and which releases are censored, please do so. I'm too lazy to find out for myself.

ANYONE GOT THIS??

Waaaay pre-Williams, yo.

In spite of this setback, Miller still had Sturdivant and Citters continue work on "Roger Rabbit." He ordered that live action footage be shot, so that pencil test animation could be layered over these scenes -- to see if a toony Roger Rabbit could convincingly interact with a live action Eddie Valiant.

Early subscribers to the Disney Channel actually got a chance to see this footage on an April 1983 broadcast of "Disney Studio Showcase." Hosted by animation historian John Culhane, this program (which also hyped the then-in-production film "Baby - Secret of the Lost Legend" as well as Tim Burton's TV version of Hansel & Gretel) included a preview of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."

The test footage featured an unknown actor standing in for Eddie Valiant. After exiting an alley, Eddie is suddenly accosted by a giant cartoon police detective. He's then shown drinking at a bar with an early version of Jessica (Who at this point in her development, wasn't quite so voluptuous. This Jessica -- who was supposed to be the villain in this version of the film -- looked a lot like Cruella De Vil-gone-Hollywood). The segment ends with Culhane exiting the Roger Rabbit production offices, just before a fully animated and painted version of Roger strolled through this live action setting.

The only releases I can confirm over here in PAL Land are the 1990 single VHS, 1996 It's Roger Rabbit [Exclusive Gift Pack] VHS and the 2003 single DVD.

It's Roger Rabbit was a triple bill of all the shorts. Check out the cover and screenshot.

Got 2 leads on that 93 test footage. Will keep y'all updated in the Thief and the Cobbler thread.

There are potential tons of Roger material to be released. The screen tests, the different workprints, that version with rubber puppets standing in for the toons... sadly, they have a smaller chance of ever leaking than the Lost Cut of Star Wars has.

Oh, the final version is good enough for me here. "Behind the Ears" was more than enough of a making of footage thingy. But I love this early pre-Williams test footage, cos it's so different y'know.

Like spotting the photos of early design Jessica in the final cut. It's so wrong it's interesting.

EDIT: Hey, supposedly there's a frame of Bugs Bunny giving Mickey the finger as he says "Ain't I a stinker?"

Could we get a framegrab of that?

Also, remember that originally "For a Good Time Call Allyson Wonderland" had somebody's phone number on it? Eisner's maybe? I forget ...
Author

It said:

For a Good Time, Call Allyson Wonderland
The Best is Yet to Be! (as the film timeframe is set before the release of Alice, not like that mattered usually)

For one frame it became Eisner's home phone number. They removed it on video. Considering what happened when they used a real phone number for God in Bruce Almighty, it seems like a good idea.

Are they STILL doing that? You think they would have learned their lesson after "867-5309".

I'm fairly sure it was originally "the best is yet to come", and this bad pun was the other reason why it was changed...

Not "come " .... never.

It's a play on "Grow old along with me, The best is yet to be"

Anyway.

ocp, the "Behind the Ears" documentary does feature about 30-seconds of the test footage. Not much, but just in case you didn't know.

In regards to Bugs, it's long been said that he flips Mickey the bird, but how can that be? Which of his four fingers is considered his middle one?

Well, they accidently used a real number on the beeper instead of the usual "555-". So everyone iwith that number recieved prank calls for God for a while. They changed it on the video.

Thanks for that grab. Looks like the bird to me.

I have Behind the Ears .... good doc. I don't have the first disc in that set, the "kid's disc," but maybe Patrick can hook me up.
