I'm working on a new project, which involves this Thai martial arts film from 2003. The movie was released domestically in 2005, but as an edited, rescored version. The movie was released onto DVD prior to its US theatrical premiere in a few countries. It was mildly popular for a while, and mostly screened in smaller cinemas in the USA.

I saw the US theatrical release at a local theater and did not really care for it. Although the subs were more accurate, the revamped music and editing of certain scenes hampered its enjoyment.

The film rights were purchased in 2004 by Luc Besson (Fifth Element) and the film was reedited and rescored for the western market. I believe some of the sound effects were also altered. From the info I have been able to find, the ONLY uncensored, unedited 108 minute version in NTSC format was released by Edko of Hong Kong. Unfortunately, due to some mixup, it did not contain English subtitles. This version is not quite as clean as the US R1 release, but it contains a great DTS track and most importantly, is the original version. I've recently found a copy of the film, taken from the Edko release with added English subtitles. Because the Dolby track is rather weak, and the Cantonese dub is pointless, this release will be DTS only. There will also not be any special features, since they do not have English subtitles and just take up space needed for video quality.

Stats:
1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen NTSC Format
Thai DTS-ES 6.1 audio (768k)
Unedited, uncensored 108 minute version
English subs

It has been recoded to fit onto a DVDR and will contain the original menu (in Chinese). Once the menu pops up all you need to do is hit the enter/start button on your remote and it will start playing. I left the menu intact since it contains some cool looking animated fight sequences.
I have not done my own torrent before, but I will look into getting one posted onto MySpleen asap. If for some reason I cannot, is anyone out there willing to help?

No no. I'm interested. I have the original Thai Edko release and the UK Premier Asia release. I love this movie, and would love to see a fan edit

I'd be interested in this disc too. I just assumed this thread was to let people know that you'd made a disc. Unfortunately, having just started University and having less and less time/money to spend - I hadn't posted here yet. However, count me as someone wanting to check out this disc.

I've been visiting this forum for a long time and this could well be the first time i could be of some help. I have the original Thai release of Ong Bak and also a fan subbed(i think dutch, english, french, german poorly translated btw) version of the Thai DVD release. I think both are in PAL format. If you want me to look these up to see if there's anything useful on the discs for you let me know.

Update: unsubbed disc: anamorphic, running time 1h44m (PAL) so probably the same cut as you have. It has a 5.1 ac3 soundtrack, 338 Megabytes in size. As far as i know this is the disc as it was first released in Thailand. It has all the original menus which are in Thai and English which is strange as the movie itself has no subtitles.

Subbed disc: anamorphic, running time 1h44m (PAL), 5.1 AC3 soundtrack 340 MB in size. Like i said this one has fan made subs in Dutch, English, German and French.

Also, if you want to have subtitles checked or added let me know, i know many Thai people.

Thanks for the support. This isn't a fan edit, it is simply a reencoding of the Hong Kong Edko release (with added Eng subs) because it is the only original version of the film in NTSC format, aside from the R3 Korean release (which I have not seen personally). The R1 "Luc Besson" version is a modified, recut version with different music and sound effects and I wanted to be able to offer the original film to those who might be interested. I have not been able to get uploader status at myspleen, so I will need someone who has it to post this for me. I will be glad to send out a free DVDR to anyone who can help.

Can't help with the uploading I'm afraid, I don't have upload status either. Really am looking forward to watching this. I think I actually tried to do it myself once I got the Edko release, can't remember why I gave up though.

This edit sounds really interesting. I've seen ong-bak but I have no idea what version, but it looks like this is a better version no matter which one I've seen. Looking forward to it!

Now let's hope a kind soul will upload/post it...
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.

I guess I didn't make the statement clear enough: It's one of the only original cuts IN NTSC FORMAT (NOT PAL!) Besides, there's no DTS on the R4 release.

This thread is in dodgy territory.

If there is an official DVD available, then you are expected to purchase it and use your region-free PAL-compatible player to watch it.

What you basically have is a copy of the uncut version, in NTSC format with DTS soundtrack, with custom English subs added?

Hi there, Yes this was my understanding of the rules. That we preserve movies which are not available, regardless of video signals (NTSC/PAL). Shouldn't worry what the sound format is DTS or DD5.1

Also the UK release (Premier Asia) is the uncut version, but they have used another soundtrack, instead of using the original. (A stupid idea in my opinion). .

But it is a fan edit of sorts, it's like a merger of all the best bits from the various versions available. I don't think it's any different than the fan edits that have utilised the 2004 edition of the Star Wars trilogy.

I decided to leave this thread open, as TR47's version is different to any available retail version. But Jay has the final say whether it is different enough to allow the discussion to stay.

I did this mostly for NTSC viewers without access to multi region PAL converting players since R1 customers are forced into buying the Luc Besson version. The soundtrack is also a vast improvement over the Dolby versions. Yes, what Moth3r described is accurate. Sorry for the direct link; in my haste to make it available, I forgot about the direct linking policy.

DVD players that convert PAL to NTSC are dirt cheap. I don't think this quite qualifies as a "preservation effort". Sorry.
