Info: Moonwalker

Ok, now I realize everybody on the planet thinks that Michael Jackson is a freak and a pervert, but this was made back in 1988 when he was the coolest thing ever, before his face fell off and his music sucked. So anyway, I’m sure people have seen or at least heard of this short film (I’m not just talking about the abbreviated music video “Smooth Criminal” shown on MTV back in the day).

It was only ever released on VHS, the whole mini movie with Michael fighting Joe Pesci as “Mr. Big” and the soldiers with the machinegun flashlights and robot special effects, etc. plus all the accompanying videos with the claymation rabbit and little kids doing a parody of “Bad” etc. But I see that there people selling a bootleg DVD entitled “Moonwalker: A Movie Like No Other” with new cover artwork. One seller claimed it was an “unofficial UK DVD that is discontinued.” I’ve never seen the DVD but I am assuming it’s pure bootleg.

So because I have fond childhood memories of watching this movie (I own the VHS) and playing the video game version on my Sega Genesis, and because I’d like to see the wind taken out of the sails of the people selling the bootleg, how about it? Anybody up to releasing it on here or creating a new version?

Just thought I’d throw that one out there, or if anyone has any info on an existing release doing the rounds, let me know!

Where were you in '77?

It's available on DVD.

And to the OP: Nice generalisation there, I for one don't think he's a pervert. He's certainly not all there, but not a pervert. But that's for another thread on another forum, somewhere.

Edit: I've actually just read all your post now after being pissed off at the first line in it.

The DVD is not discontinued you can buy it here. If you've got access to an actual UK branch of HMV it can be picked up for £6.99. It's a HMV UK exclusive which is why it's in short supply, although I'm pretty sure it was once available in R1 land.

As for it being a mini-movie, that's wrong as it clocks in at 88 minutes.

Edit II: I'd love to see a a DVD conversion of Michael Jackson's Ghosts. I have this on VHS, and I'm pretty sure it's unavailable on any other format. It's a fantastic video and was created to promote the lead single from his 1997 album Blood On The Dancefloor: History In The Mix.

We NEED to preserve THE MAKING OF MICHAEL JACKSON'S THILLER because it was only avaible on vhs and laserdisc in the 80's and its a great peice of pop history. Can someone capture form the lasersic possibly?? I would love to own a dvd copy of this thats nota shitty vhs transfer. And preserving GHosts would be a good idea. And moonwalker isn't avialbe in the USA on DVd so maybe we could bend the rules and preserve it haha.

Thriller, yes. Ghosts, yes. But Moonwalker is available regardless of region, so creating an edit of that just because it's not available where you live, smacks of piracy really. A multi-region DVD player costs pennies nowadays.

I would make transfer of Thiller if one i had the laserdisc and two i had a player. And ghosts would be good to preserve. Maybe a doulbe feature on DVD, the maing of Thriller and Ghosts. Now that i think of it Ghosts was released on laserdisc in France. And I didn't know multi region players were cheap now, thats good . O we should also preserve the Legend Continues on laserdisc

Thriller is already on DVD.

"THE MAKING OF MICHAEL JACKSON'S THILLER"

My bad. You meant the "Making Of". That's a good idea.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Thanks for the info guys (and to Boomstick, I didn't intend to insult anyone, it's just that any mention of MJJ anywhere else on the 'net immediately causes cascades of pedophilia jokes and crap, so I figured I'd air that out right at the start just in case, nothing personal, reputation aside, I liked his old stuff just like everybody else). So the UK version IS official after all... wow, I stand corrected then.

So I'd need a PAL TV and a region-free player...

Guess I came up with "jack" and "squat."

Don't need a PAL TV if you are NTSC. Cyberhome DVD players and some of the other cheap Chinese-made DVD players at Wal-Mart/K-Mart do PAL/NTSC conversion instantly, as well as easy to make region-free.

So I need to buy a new dvd player and tweak it to watch this. Okay. Or I could try encoding my vhs tape (it's "copy protected" so my dvd recorder won't copy it, nor can I dub it with two vcr's) and authoring a dvd for myself...

Would you do a cap of Making Thriller if anyone has it here?

Hi. I just wanted to say that I paid good money to see Moonwalker in the cinema. I also have very find memories of renting The making of Thriller over and over. Ghosts? I didnt like it. The song is quite good and the make up was pretty interesting but I'm not sure that Stan Winston was a good choice of director.

I remember when the Moonwalker DVD was announced, I was hoping for a special edition - but this one is empty.

Well, at least it has a nice cover.

I might get the region 4 version. It a shame Sony hasn't released it in the states.

"How bout Captain EO?"

I have that. It's a fullscreen transfer. Pretty good quality, too. It's fun to watch once in a while.

In my world, which may or may not be your world, BR=Blu-Ray.

Because...

Digital Video/Versatile Disc => DVD, but do folks say Digital Video/Versatile Disc? No. And I hope no one obnoxious chimes in and says they do.

Blu Ray Disc => BRD, but does anyone say Blu Ray Disc? No, folks say Blu-Ray.

Blu Ray => BR

OK, whatever you say, but it is BD lol, not BR, any Blu-ray forum it is BD, BR just sounds dumb.

DVD doesn't stand for anything, not "Digital Versatile Disc" and not "Digital Video Disc". CD stood for compact disc, so people took to assuming that the last "D" in DVD must mean disc, which is not necessarily true, so saying a "DVD disc" is not incorrect per se. Thus you are technically correct that by the rules of CD and DVD abbreviation, BRD, BD, or BR should all be correct abbreviations of either "Blu-ray Disc" or "Blu-ray" sans disc. However, it should be said that I am quite partial to "BD" because it goes back to the simplicity of "CD".
