Why not 24p?

Why doesn't everyone encode DVDs @ 24 (okay, 23.976) fps with 3:2 pulldown flags in the mpeg2 stream rather than 29.97? Surely this allows for less compression?

No one else is as smart as we are?

Honestly, I couldn't tell ya.

When 24 fps source material is encoded in PAL (25 fps), it is often encoded frame by frame. This means that the movie is a little bit faster and often also a little bit higher in pitch.
Some DVD player software can slow down playback to the original 24 fps. I don't know of any stand-alone DVD player that can do this though.

My hope is that the coming HD-formats will do as you say. I think hardware is ready for it. It would save disk space also..

THX isn't talking about PAL! What's your point?

Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

Because when capturing from an analogue source, IVTC is not always as easy as you might think.

True, but I think some people just don't bother. I know it took me a little while to finally realize conceptually what the benefits of IVTC really were.

Thanks for the replies, guys! (Darth Lars - Arnie.d is right, but thanks anyway).

So do I take it that some of the preservation transfers are already encoded this way? Does anyone know which ones?

The X0 transfer is already IVTCed. It it currently undergoing color correction and other fixes (blots, sparkles, etc.). It will be 24fps with pulldown in the MPEG.

I got a little bit confused there. Too fast. Did not read it through. Sorry.

From memory, I think most of them are. DrGonzo's certainly is. Any other anamorphic transfer should be (Cowclops V2, Farsight). Also the NTSC versions based on the PAL laserdiscs (Citizen, Dr M).

Some people don't encode at 24p because some people are lazy.

No really, 24p does take a lot of extra effort to achieve sometimes. Nevertheless, most of my releases have been in 24p ... Classic Editions were 24p converted sadly to 30p by my damn program, and Thief and the Cobbler is true 24p.

What program did you use?
