HD transfers

I purchased a bootleg copy of the old trilogy on DVD. While they are acceptable in terms of preserving the original version of the film, I noticed a few problems.

1. Much as I hate to admit it, the picture and color resolution is better on the Lucasfilm DVDs.
2. I tried watching them on a high definition television. While the picture quality was acceptable (best I could expect), the picture was too small. Why? The 4:3 laserdisc signal had been transferred, without adaptation, and became a 4:3 DVD signal. This was the beginning of my education on high definition, or 16:9, formatting. Does anyone know what software you need to make sure the picture is framed in a 16:9 signal? Has anyone been successful in converting a 4:3 signal to 16:9?

Firstly, most 16:9 displays should have an option to zoom 4:3 "letterboxed" widescreen DVDs to the proper size. So if the picture is too small, look for a zoom setting on your display.

Second, 16:9 does not equal high definition. (I don't know if you knew that already, I couldn't tell from your post.) Several versions exist that are formatted for 16:9 displays - DrGonzo, Cowclops V2, Moth3r, etc.

Citizen has produced a transfer in high-bitrate HD-res XviD format, which is probably the best choice for a HTPC viewing on a HD display.
