More screenshots! More I say!!

Seriously though, do u have an official dvd site we could all go to? and did you ever post a screencap of the redone Alderaan pre-kablooey, pre-Leia's dialogue with Tarkin shot?

Were the recovered starfields (quite cool btw) you posted just test shots? cause in some of the shots they look a little 'too' recovered--like unrealistic I mean--instrusive.

- If I get a copy this will be bumped to the TOP of my torrentz upload list and SegaFlip offered a newsgroup release so I think we can get this out there!

the alley shot with the spy droid amongst the stormtroopers in mos eisley.

I'd done it but I've hit on an idea to make it even better.

watch this space. russ knows what I'm talking about.

sickening how it takes 3 days of graft to fix a 6 second shot.

LOL...which shot is this?

"if I go 6500 mbps I have six soundtracks so lose the 1993 LD commentary track which to be honest is very meagre anyway"

Agreed. It's very spotty. I created a commentary menu so that you could jump to each part (and even put some segments together)...otherwise, you have to wait a long....long...time between commentaries.

its the cgi panning shot of the rebel fighters going past yavin.

george and co were sneaky and made the new cg shot match the length of the original, however, as I am ditching the flash panning move cos it ain't in keeping with the style of the rest of the film at that point and chaning it back to a two shot it is now about 60-70 frames short so I am having to slow down whats left from 25fps to about 18fps to make it work and I am getting judders and god knows what else to fix it.

nearly there but I still ain't happy with it. still slight juddering going on.

as it is I might still do the pannign shot but, I object! strongly!

but then, as I am keeping the space battle CG which includes some panning shots, I think I might end up putting it back to the original CG 97 shot. sticks in my craw though. also means I have to remaster all my sound because obviously the soundclips are then the wrong way round.

right, I think I licked this. find links to two files. both are xvid. don't worry about the starfield, its there in the full res version.

flypast on its own

what do people think, does it jerk, is it a problem, does it pass muster. is the motion smooth enough for you to accept it?

@mebejedi, also another issue if I had seven soundtracks, not only is space an issue, but I also have to then consider hitting the upper throughout limit of DVD standard for players to cope. omitting the 7th soundtrack keeps me within the max bitrate limit. of course, its the PCM sound that puts me close to threshold, but by omitting the 7th soundtrack, it also means I can keep the video M2v file size roughly the same as the original DVD release which is about 5.7GB for video, the rest for sound and menus.

one thing I need to know, you might be able to help is how to master the menu to make multiple soundtracks as a selectable menu option?

I'm using maestro by the way.

Hi Tellan, damn that looks good, how do you make the colors so crisp?i am working on a cropped unsubbed version of the Special Collection, and would like to crisp up the colors on my set,are you using avisynth?
it is slightly jerky though(cant tell, might be the starfield),my opening starfield in ANH is a little jerky, but it might just have to stay that way, once it gets to the star destroyer firing on Leia's ship it is fine.
but damn that looks good, sounds good too
keep up the great work

mutiple answers ehre.

1 crispness ofcolour. I do use avisynth but mainly to remove jaggies, add subtitles and crop. colour correction is done in vdub.

i) this was all done in virtualdub outputted as an avi then run through sony vegas 5, all colour correction done in vdub first
ii) filter to use white balance. this allows you to set a base colour values well. it cures a lot of the DVD colour correction issues almost right off.
iii) colormill, I got this through Neurons forum. this is again a vdub filter done by some russian if I remember correctly. super filter for lifting colour out of muddy backgrounds.

2 jerkiness. this is down to what there is to play with footage wise. the jerkiest bit is the beginning of the shot and the bit before the wipe, basically down to speed of the moving ships in the panning move combined with reduced frame rate, just no way of getting round it. the wipe is there to help hide this. also, if you reverse the panning move into a 2 shot with a cut, its a bit odd, but a wipe or crossfade helps reduce this.

3. I refuse to use the original shot because then the quality in comparison to the surrounding footage is awful.

ah the cunning use of wipes.

to me, the flyby is a scene begging for a wipe, we have crossing left to right. it's a star wars moment and at the same time, wipes, conveniently let me hide a bit of the jerkiness at the beginning and end of the flyby shots.

what do people think of this version?

can you spot where things have been slowed down?

as you can see, it messes with it a bit, but I have always always maintained, quality is my top priority and if I have to diddle a shot to make it work, it will ALWAYS be in the spriit of the original trilogy release version.

considering what little I have to work with, I think virtualdub and vegas together have done bloody well actually.

barring a slight timing tweak I think this is what I'm going with

new flyby in xvid form for evaluation, yes I know the stars are non existent, its xvid sample, sheesh

Unacceptably jerky, IMO.

Can you not use your new shortened shot as is, and trim the audio with cunning use of crossfades?

number of problems with that though.

means redoing all of my audio which has already been mastered + it's a hard one to fix

a) because it has music behind it,
b) half way through there's that pitch change in the engine noise as the shot changes

makes it a tough shot to fix.

I don't know anything about the technical aspect of this, but would it possible to remove the jerkiness by using morphs to create intermediate frames?

I thought Darth Editous did this in a number of places for his edit of ANH (like Luke igniting his saber in Ben's hut).

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

thinking laterally, I like it, but not really practical in this instance.

eg. DE morphed luke's saber opening and closing. it's basically a very static shot with virtually no movement. mine on the other hand is panning shot with tons of movement. I don't even want to go there.

I think my wife will divorce me after this.

9 days this has taken me but finally I think I have it as non jerky as its ever going to get.

programs used

Vegas 5.0
virtual dub 1.5.10.1
motionperfect
slowmotion
avisynth 2.6

the second half of this shot, ie the first half of the SE CGI shot was run through SLOWMOTION at 1.5x slow.

the first half was a frigging nightmare but I think I have finall cracked it.

step 1. avisynth script to convert framerate to 150fps
step 2. run it motionperfect so that it plays back at 135% the run time of the original shot, ie one third longer but keeping 150fps
step 3. avisynth script to convert framerate down to 50fps
step 4. run this avisynth script through virtual dub to decimate every other frame so we end up with a 25fps file to be inserted back into vegas.

the variations I have tried have been unbeleivable. I've done 100fps, 75fps, 33fps etc ad nauseum but I think I have now got it to a level that I am happy with it.

final flyby version (I hope)

enjoy, critique please. I think this works with wipes. but what do people think. BTW, regardless of what people say, I will be doing the fade between the control room and the first part of the flyby.

Tellan,

This looks pretty smooth to me. The fade from the control room is pretty subtle, but I find the iris wipe is a bit distracting. I guess I'm just not used to it. I prefer to do without it, but if you still need the wipe to stretch out the sequence, I can live with it.

Erik

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Author

Much smoother. You can see a little blurring if you look closely, but that's much less distracting than the jerkiness of the previous file.

Regarding the wipe - and this is just a suggestion - I think it may look better going the other way, i.e. a closing iris rather than opening. The reason is because the fighters are seen moving away from the camera (getting smaller), and wipes in other parts of the trilogy generally follow the direction of movement on screen. Do you know what I mean or have I not explained it very well?

no, I get you, I have played with that. couldn make my mind up.

my reasoniing was because the fighters in the second shot are coming 'towards you' the wipe should too. I'll play with it and see.

motionpefrect was fine for the second shot, but the big pass it really screwed the pooch, even when I fed it a 150fps file, if I used motionperfect on it s own, there was loads of digital smearing etc. I had to use script to revert the framerate back afterwards.

*update*

played with it and yes the iris in works much better so I've reversed that. it follows the direction of the first group and is easier on the eye.

further update, last night, redid all the space shots so stars are more visible than before. tweaked the existing technique so stars are now 'stars'
