LCD TV Questions

Hi all, I'm looking to buy an LCD television for my bedroom very soon, but I have some questions. I've been reading a lot about HD and it's varied resolutions. But I see televisions with 1280x720, and some have 1280x768. As I understand it, 720p is 720 lines, and is an HD standard. How will this apply to a screen with a native resolution of 1280x768?

Also, can anyone recommend a 16x9 LCD at around 20"? I tried out a 27" and it was way too big for my little room. Thanks guys (and girls, and Gundarks)

"Thanks guys (and girls, and Gundarks)"

I like this guy.

(Sorry that I didn't answer your question, though....)

Well I'm glad to hear that! I'm a regular lurker here at the OT.com, and know that there are some pretty knowledgable people here when it comes to video related stuff, which is why I asked my question here instead of at an audio/video forum, because hey, I like you guys!

Well, if you are dead set on an LCD, try to find out what has the fastest refresh rate. Personally I think that makes the most difference. As for what you're looking for, Sony makes one that's 23" and is relatively cheap.

The standard for pc TFT screens above 17" is now 1280x1024 at 4:3 ratio so work out what the proper resolution for 16:9 is from that (720 by my calculation)

Right, I thought the proper number of vertical pixels for a 16x9 screen would be 720 also, but I have seen televisions that are the same size with a different number of pixels. So in theory the one with the most pixels would be the clearest, but not if you watch a DVD or give it a 720p HD signal, then it wouldn't be displaying things in it's native resolution.

I would like a DLP model, but for my screen size 20-23", LCD seems to be the only option. And $$$ is an issue.

The 768 screens could actually scale down 16:9 HD pictures with a slight border at the top and bottom just like 4:3 tv's with letterboxing. Or they might be using weird pixel sizes that are elongated so more pixels in the vertical axis or perhaps they're not exactly 16:9 screens.

Hmmm, whats wierd is that i'm not seeing just a few TV's with that 768 pixel count, it was almost ALL of them at BestBuy (Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, etc)

In an odd way, that makes sense. I can't really recommend an LCD TV (I'm still using a flat CRT monitor because I'm concerned about pixel death in LCD displays), but most so-called hi-def displays will interpolate an HD signal to make it fit within the resolution of the display. BTW, a 720p HD signal should have a resolution of 720x1280, which means that any 1024x768 display would have to do some interpolation of the vertical resolution.

I can't really explain why so many are 1280x768, but I do know that they just put small black bars top and bottom. It's not really noticeable because they're only 24 pixels each, and when you have subtitles on, it uses the extra on the bottom for the titles. I think the reason they're 768 is just that it's standard for screens, and probably cheaper than making one 720 high

Plus the fact that most HD displays @ this point still are not capable of displaying 1080x1920, the full resolution of the highest HD standard.

Yep, thats what concerns me. They'll probably move the goalposts in about 2 or 3 years and up the screen resolution so that people can watch Hi Def xvid or Wmv at super high defintion on their Xbox's and PS3's.

 And ten years later...

It's funny since I'm currently watching ''A&E Intervention'' on Netflix which is basically old episodes from season 1 and 2 (2005 and 2006), besides the show being in 4:3 format I just can't help to notice that all TV's shown in the episodes are old CRTs, also all cell phones are regular nokia/motorola non-touch screen devices.

10 years... go figure

Not to burst your bubble, but 1280x1024 is 5:4, not 4:3.

...it had to be said, even this late in the game.
