Classic Edition: Return of the Jedi by Ocpmovie (Released) — Page 7

This completes the Classic Edition trilogy.

And a damn fine trilogy it must be (I'm strapped for cash, so my lot in life will be waiting for torrents until everything is up). If half the praise I've heard of your DVS is true, then I find it hard to think that anyone will ever top this.

It is also my last Star Wars disc, as far as I know right now.

Ahem... *puts on voice-changing Vader mask* *deep breath* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! *regains composure* That sucks. Oh, well, at least now I can be at peace knowing my OOT collection with Special Features is complete, instead of constructing my own boxset just to find out another OCP SW disc has been released. Just to make sure I know of everything, is this list of OCP SW DVDs complete?

Star Wars: Classic Edition
The Empire Strikes Back: Classic Edition
Return of the Jedi: Classic Edition (Dual Layer)
Deleted Magic
Return of the Ewok and Other Little Films
Special Edition Hype

Is that it? Anyway, my only regret is that someone hasn't done a DVD reconstruction of the theatrical TPM and AotC. The former is only on VHS and the latter has never been released at all. Well, of course, one other regret is the lack of Deleted Magic Strikes Back. Truly tragic. Oh, well, at least T'Bone has reconstructions of the Wampa Invasion and Sandstorm scenes on his site (as well as various other second-long clips), so that'll have to do. I salute you, Mr. Gilchrist. You have made a DVD set superior to that of GL. Not many fans can claim that, as easy as it may sound. The only thing standing between me and the discs is the time it takes to make torrents of them. That is all of them, right?

@(*#@(&#(@&*!!

So after a long week of work I come back to do the final syncing ...

And after three tries today it's STILL not in sync. It goes out of sync at what used to be the DL break point. (Han says "I've got an idea.")

None of this makes any sense, but it stopped making sense a long time ago, so I'll just roll with it.

I'm just guessing now. I look at the playback, say, oh, I think that's ahead by seven frames ... and then wait 40 minutes for it to mux before seeing if I was right.

.....

@*#&@*(#^@!!

I SHOULD be right. We'll see. Maybe this will be the mux that finally gets it right.

Well, Jambe Davdar has made a disc called Building Empire that is basically Empire done in a Deleted Magic style ....

It's a very good disc, so check it out. I've actually given him a long list of notes to try and improve it for a second release. So we'll see.

Here is the list of my SW releases.

Deleted Magic
Star Wars: Classic Edition
The Empire Strikes Back: Classic Edition (Single Layer - Dual Layer also exists)
Return of the Jedi: Classic Edition (Single Layer)
Return of the Jedi: Classic Edition (Dual Layer)
Return of the Ewok and Other Little Films
Special Edition Hype

1975 Auditions Remix

Kind of worth counting. And I did a slight remix of Moth3r's first ANH (to fix an aspect ratio problem) which had the antismoking ad at the beginning, but that's not worth counting.

IT'S DONE!

HAHAHAHAH ...

It's finally done and all in sync.

When I said I was guessing, looking at it and saying, well, it goes out of sync at the dual layer break point, and I think (only from looking at it) it's by 7 frames ...

I was completely right. It WAS seven frames. (I've got a good eye, don't I?) The resulting version stayed in sync throughout.

I will still watch it a few times at the parts I don't usually watch it, to see if it goes horribly out of sync anywhere ... but I think it's DONE.

I will start burning copies rightaway.

I'd like to announce that my next project will be a restoration of the rarely-seen animated classic The Thief and the Cobbler, created by Richard Williams, who animated Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I'd like to thank Baby Hum for his help in procuring the necessary materials. I've just looked at them and was inspired all over again by this classic film.

I know that many of you will not have heard of this film, and so it doesn't sound as interesting to you as Star Wars, which everyone knows.

But this edit needs to be done. Unlike Star Wars, the film has never been seen the way it was intended to be seen. It was recut to death by Disney in an effort to destroy it, and is not well known even today.

I consider it a public service to restore Richard Williams' original vision, on which he spent 30 years. Those who have never heard of this film, maybe you'll discover it in my cut.

Here we are then. The Thief and the Cobbler. Recobbled Director's Cut.

Those of you who asked for dual layer copies ...

Be SURE to check out the very special DVD-ROM extras. Great stuff to be found therein, most of it created by our own Movealong, Bo McCarty.

For example, this is the first ever release of a Warwick Davis commentary for Return of the Ewok. The sound is VERY muffled, which explains why it wasn't on the DVD, but it's interesting anyway. Many many thanks to Alex Newborn for providing this.

Added the Star Wars Musical, and lots and lots of DVD covers, to the DVD-ROM folder. I'll see what space permits me to actually include!

I burned a few copies.

The Obi-Wan scene was too quiet to my ears, so I'm reencoding the disc now with a louder Obi-Wan. I had to boost it as high as possible, and THEN add a filter to boost it further.

In general the music and effects are too loud compared to the dialogue on the 2004 mix, so I keep having to bring the dialogue up in quieter scenes.

This also allowed me to fix the sync on one Luke line that I'd missed. I hope there aren't any other sync errors I haven't spotted - I'm not planning to just sit down and watch the movie all the way through.

I know it's off topic, but YOU brought it up OCP...
What are you plans for Thief and the Cobbler? Since it was never really completed are you going to leave it unfinished?
I assume you're going to take existing higher quality releases and reconstructing the bootleg work print from them?

I've started a thread in forum 11 for The Thief and the Cobbler, so we can discuss the film there. (Another classic fantasy from the 70s and 80s ruined in the 90s - heh.)

I actually think the film WAS pretty much finished when it was taken away from Williams - I restored the film 6 years ago and the Miramax and Calvert cuts show signs that it was essentially complete.

However, that doesn't help us as I don't have access to the scenes they cut out. Neither do they, apparently - it's said that much of it is lost, though I suspect that Williams somehow managed to keep it all anyway.

So yes, there will be a few scenes that appear in bootleg quality, and scenes that appear as storyboards and pencil tests.

The real surprise will be how much of the film is actually finished, though. Nearly all of it is.

I will have to use a few shots that were finished by other, less talented animators, but that's the way it goes. Many of them are from the animators' original pencil drawings, so it works fairly well.

Just wanted to applaud you on finishing the classic Jedi, I am a fan of the OT how it should be and I have to say your work is stunning, I'm really looking forward to seeing Jedi, good luck with your next projects.

I plan to live forever, so far so good.

Hi OCP

I noticed you mentioned for those who requested dual layer copies..., I didn't but I was wondering if I were to send you a dual layer disc and the cost for shipping would I be able to get a copy? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Snakestorm, what's your actual name? I can change your request to a DL. Email me about this please. tygerbug at yahoo.com.

Made ANOTHER fix to the disc. Changed the timing on some of Jabba's subtitles, but most importantly fixed the "watch film without Oola scene" option. What you actually see on the disc doesn't match what I see in DVD Studio Pro when I create it (again, no idea why) so my timing for the chapter breaks that would allow you to skip this scene were a bit off.

Now it's fixed, and I just watched it that way - seamless! This leaves a shorter edit of Oola's fate than the O-OT version actually has, but it's essentially the same, and seems quite natural watching it.

1975 Auditions Remix

Oh! Another one. Interesting. I hope someone can load all of these up on MySpleen soon. Right now there's only Deleted Magic and Star Wars: Classic Edition.

And I did a slight remix of Moth3r's first ANH (to fix an aspect ratio problem) which had the antismoking ad at the beginning, but that's not worth counting.

Well, since we already have ANH, this is probably negligable. The antismoking ad sounds interesting, though. Is there any place to find it by itself?
Author
Time
Probably. The quality was awful.

If I can find it, I'll sneak it onto the Jedi Dual Layer DVD ROM extras.

Just checked the "Watch without Oola" option on my actual DVD player.

On my computer, the edit was instantaneous, and worked great. On my DVD player, there's a pause of several seconds while the player finds the next chapter.

Sigh.

And this is why seamless branching sucks.

Oh well, it's still watchable. Hope the break plays quicker on other players. It certainly plays fine on the computer.

You might want to test it out on a couple other DVD players, just to see what it does. If you leave something up to chance, you always get screwed.
Author
Time
I use an Epson printer for my discs.

I'm not really leaving anything up to chance ... The Oola-less version is just a hidden option I wanted to put on there, it's basically an easter egg. If some players don't like seamless branching, that's the way it is.

Okay, I am now burning the first dual layer copy of the disc. I've burned about 30 single layer copies already.

I had a laaaarge collection of DVD-ROM extras that I wanted to include (about 2.1 GB) ... Bo McCarty had done encodes of Return of the Ewok, Classic Creatures, From Star Wars to Jedi, and Horizon: How to Film the Impossible, specifically for this release.

They're lovely and I hope this collection makes its way to the 'net ... maybe even on its own, or broken up into its component files.

There were a few things I had to leave out. I wanted to include the Turkish Star Wars, but at 700 MB it was just too big.

I had to start cutting things to get it down so it would burn ... I included Star Wars the Musical, but had to cut out the "making of the musical" videos and some of the Mp3s that were already included as video files.

I was able to include the Story of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, but had to remove the Rebel Mission to Ord Mantell album.

I was able to include basically every cover that's been released for the OCP releases.

You can watch Return of the Ewok with audio commentary by Warwick Davis.

There's a lot of stuff there, and dual layer folks will get value for their dual layerness.

Since the disc looks so great in single layer (even now I can't really tell the difference), I wanted to give the dual layer people SOMETHING extra, so there it is.

I highly recommend either version.

Rock on.

Sounds great. Will the dual layer version be hitting the net or is it only available on disk?
