STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION — Page 509

Now with Ady going in to once more fix a few things here and there for the HD version of Revisited, I’d eternally regret if I did not suggest the following.

Would it be in the realm of possibility to update the destruction of Alderaan using the Kijimi destruction from Rise Of Skywalker? I always felt the ANH Alderaan shot comically goofy looking, of course constrained by the limits of 70s FX. Say what you will about the sequel trilogy but in RoS they did a fantastic looking planetary destruction by one of those OP Sith Star Destroyers. The footage of Kijimi almost looks colour graded as if it was shot for ANH.

I made a real quick and dirty mockup of the Kijimi footage where I replaced the red laser beam by a green one. The mockup also includes views with the Death Star in the shot but I’m sure that’s not even necessary and footage from ANH could be combined with the bits of only the planet blowing up.

Most editors remove Kijimi’s destruction from TROS so this would be a welcome addition.

Well i still have no resolution over the broken printer. I’ve given all the information that Elegoo have requested but things now seem to be in limbo as i’m now waiting for them to get back to me. I’m just preying they aren’t going to fob me off with the original warranty being so close to running out. Most people seem to have good dealing with Elegoo when it comes to sorting out replacement parts under warranty, so fingers crossed. But it does seem to take them take months to agree to sending out the parts and then there are the many weeks wait for them to be shipped from china. So this printer could be out of action for a long time yet. So i was thinking of just getting a new one as they are pretty cheap now ( around £200) . at least that way i can get back to printing and, if the other one gets fixed, i can have the two of them running and cut the printing times for all these parts in half.

Thanks to those that have donated so far. we are getting closer to replacing the funds that were withdrawn in that guys charge back ( such a damn shame about the current USD to GBP exchange rate & paypals fees). If i can manage to raise enough within the next week i would be able to order the new printer and the final batch of filament at the same time and be able to use the discount voucher i have which would cut about £60 off the total cost. So if you are able to donate then it would be greatly appreciated.

Now onto the thing i originally promised i would post about… Darth Vader’s ANH voice.

His voice in ANH, even after it has reprocessed since the 2004 DVDs in an attempt to make him sound more like he does in ESB & ROTJ, still seems off to me and many others. The way he delivers the lines is faster and more intense ( (😉 ) and sometimes angry and his pitch seems higher for many lines. Not the more calm way he is from ESB onwards. Now there isn’t much i can do about the anger side of things but i have done some tweaking to give him a more slower delivery and in some places very slightly lowered the pitch and added some slight filtering to the voice. To me it now sounds closer to his vocals in ESB. There isn’t much more i can do to it though to get him to truly match how he sounds from ESB onwards, save re-recording all of his lines in ANH ( which i don’t want to do). So here is a small sample video showcasing the tweaked voice. Hope you enjoy it…

Sounds spot on! Great job, Ady!

I quite like that he is angry at the rebels at the beginning and menacing to the Imperials. He sees the Rebels as traitors (and like the person he is trying not to be). I would have made him a bit more shouty at times in the other films but he doesn’t interact with Rebels directly in the other films. He is certainly less talkative in Rogue One. He does yell at his underlings during the Obi-Wan series. It is a great effect though. Is there another way I can get a donation to you? I’ve given up on PayPal. It will not cooperate.

right on the money with the voice

Well I for one was hoping that would’ve been a possibility, to dial down Vader’s intensity and yelling that’s earlier in ANH, but I understand if that cannot be done. Glad you at least considered it, though, Ady. Because I completely agree, even during intense situations, I also prefer Vader as cool, calm, and collected — that’s a significant part of what makes him so compelling and badass 😃

Now I gotta geek out for a minute and say that one of my favorite moments in all of Star Wars (and of course there are many) is when Vader, without even drawing his lightsaber, effortlessly deflects Han’s rapid blaster fire with his own hands. Then after all that intense gunfire and casually pulling Han’s blaster away, he still remains chill as he says, “We would be honored if you would join us.” That, to me, is peak Vader, calmly and easily taking control of the situation.

So I greatly appreciate the amount of effort that’s going into making subtle tweaks to Vader’s voice/tone where you can and feel it’s necessary. Donation sent your way, Ady! 😄

And btw, I am sorry to hear that about the low-life out there who tried to disrupt your efforts. I’ll never understand those who feel the need to go out of their way just to make it miserable for others.

JEDIT:
Just wanted to quickly add that the only time where I actually do like hearing a hint of anger in Vader’s voice is when he orders, “Bring my shuttle,” after Luke would rather sacrifice himself than join him. There he sounds pissed, and rightfully so. I mean, how can his own flesh and blood reject such a generous and irrefusable offer — the ungrateful little brat! 😄

Wishlist Of Ideas/Suggestions For Improving ROTJ

It sounds really good! I do think that there are lore reasons why he would sound angrier than usual, specifically because he was so close to taking the plans in Rogue One and they just barely slipped past him. And he’d be unbalanced once Kenobi gets involved, especially.

Real world explanation is probably that JEJ was drawing more inspiration from David Prowse’s delivery based on what we heard of him on the Tantive IV. He then made the role more his own as the films progressed.

I fully appreciate why I shouldn’t have been, but I was skeptical of modulating and slowing Vader’s voice. But this is genuinely impressive.

I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

It’s also likely because during the making of ESB they wanted to emphasize the cyborg angle more. Originally during ANH’s production, only his face was burned (his mask was custom made) and he was wearing an armored space suit with Sith robes. In post-production when Ben Burtt came up with the breathing sound effect, George Lucas thought it made Vader seem cybernetic so he decided to go with that, hence the more robotic look in ESB and ROTJ.
Once they honed in on the “more machine than man” aspect, part of that was the electronic filter added to his voice (first introduced in ESB), as well as his colder line delivery.

Well, if you remember how he was as Anakin, “I hate you!”, it seems natural that in ANH, some of that anger remains. Once we get to ESB, he’s finally starting to calm down.

There’s a whole 19 year gap between III and IV, though.

I’d be salty if someone chopped off my legs and an arm and walked away and left me to die.
& Palpy isn’t hooking him up with a therapist or anything like that, he’s actually all like “give into your anger” and then laughs about it.
NOT a wingman on a healing journey at all.

I liken Vader’s behaviour to Spock in The Cage Pilot episode, where he was nothing like what he would soon become a year later… :p

One could argue that knowing his son is alive and strong in the Force has cheered him up, made him less angry and more confident.
