The Mandalorian And Grogu - Edit ideas (contains spoilers)

SPOILERS IN THIS THREAD - do not read till you’ve seen the film.

I just saw The Mandalorian and Grogu, and thought it was mostly decent with a sprinkling of genuinely outstanding moments, design work, and excellent music… (particularly enjoyed the Phil Tippett robot mini-bosses outside the Hutt’s throne room). But could be improved further with a bit of a fan edit.

A few tweaks I’d personally suggest…

-The credits at the start! Wow, did this feel wrong for a Star Wars movie. There was actually some pretty good atmospheric footage during the credits but scrub the credits away so we can really enjoy the visuals!

-The bullet dodging at point blank range from 3 AT-AT Walkers, it stretched credibility beyond breaking point. This could do with toning down.

-Rotta the Hutt. Probably a bigger task, but a completely new vocal is needed. Star Wars has always been strange and otherworldy and an American sounding Hutt was straight up bad.

-The throne room with just the two Hutts in there? No dancers, no entertainment, no flunkeys? What on earth were the two of them doing just sitting alone on a dais all day. It felt budget constrained and strangely small. However I guess it would take quite some skills to try and populate the throne room.

-Maybe cut the Amani fight in the pool and go straight to the white serpent. Or perhaps cut the later Amani ambush in the overgrown ship. Felt like overkill and in a film with a lot of fights these were the weakest.

Just my thoughts… What did you think?

I haven’t seen the film yet, but just this clip (when it was released a couple weeks ago) could have been cut in half, I found. There’s some real strange holds on shots that aren’t even that good looking. It draws out the sequence unnecessarily and lessens the punch of it. I’m hearing that a LOT of the action ends up feeling samey and monotonous, and I’m getting the sense it’s this lack of tempo in the edit that’s doing it. I would bet that large chunks of action setpieces (if not whole sequences) could come out of the movie and improve its pace/punch.

I’ve also heard that Jeremy Allen White just… sounds like Jeremy Allen White. Which, I get! that’s probably WHY you get Jeremy Allen White, you want the way he delivers dialog. Since Huttese is a recognizable/established Star Wars language, I don’t know how you get around this unless you know someone who can do a good Jeremy Allen White impersonation AND someone who knows how to translate to Huttese, LOL. I’ve heard a lot of his dialog is repetitive (he complains about how tough it is to be Jabba’s kid quite a bit I guess) so it might just be that carving around all his exposition to key in on the lines that deliver the best combo of emotion and plot-info, vs trying to completely re-record (or worse, AI-generate) all his dialogue AND get it to match the lip-flap

I’ve heard there are opening credits (not just a big title card drop after the first 5-10 minutes like all the other anthology movies) and I’m really curious as to how it plays. People seem to be aghast at it but I’m just imagining like… a scene going and credit tags showing up onscreen as it plays? Which is pretty normal so far as cinematic convention goes. I guess I’ll see what it is when I see it, but short of completely generating a whole new title sequence out of whole cloth, (does it end up playing like the Superman main titles? Do we creatively zoom and crop to get rid of titles and then backload them to the end credits?) I’m really curious how you’d get around it.

I would say that the Filoni cameo has to go and as far as the opening I didn’t mind the ATAT scene as much as you did however if someone could trim it so it watches more like chaos, flashing, smoke and Mando’s chickenish walker dodging that would be an improvement. Spicolli the Hutt needs a redub for sure, that’s probably the biggest correction needed. I found it a lot to be a lot like Solo in that it is overall very dark and a slightly brightened version would be welcome more than anything else.
I’m not saying it’s perfect, it was fun and dumb and quite honestly the watch was over and it felt more like an hour than two hours and 10 minutes. I think that this is one where surgical editing would be better than big chunks.

I get he provided the antidote for Mando but I could do without the grasshopper fishing creature side quest considering it never came back nor was mentioned again.

You could easily change the subtitle by the Hutts from “poison” to “paralyzed for days”

Then Grogu just hides him, keeps him hydrated and then builds the dirt hut. Grogu still saves him by healing his wound with the force and then waits out the paralysis until he wakes up. That way the whole antidote section can be cut but Grogu still has to keep him hidden so the hunters don’t find his body.
