I was going to keep this under wraps until closer to the time of ANH:RHD’s release, but what the hell… (still a work in progress & the gif conversion has screwed up the colours a bit)

Had a chance to fully process the new Yavin Base shot, and while I understand it’s still a WIP, here’s a small but hopefully worthwhile suggestion.

I believe the focus of this shot should be more on the Great Temple itself — specifically the top. This will help guide the viewer’s attention to that point, as it will be the location for the next ceremony sequence.

A great example of what I mean can be seen in ROTJ during the exterior shot for the Emperor’s throne room. Notice how the camera is focused on that spire, indicating that the next scene will take place there.

So, for this WIP shot, if any part of the Great Temple is to be out of frame, I think it’s okay for the bottom portion to be, but definitely not the top as it is now 😃

Did you consider the possibility that Ady might care?

This is his project, and I’m sure he’s open ears to anything he deems worthwhile, because he genuinely wants what’s best for this labor of love. It’s really as simple as this: if he agrees with an idea, he can take it — If he doesn’t, he can disregard it. Leave it for him to decide.

No reason at all for you to be come in like that — that was uncalled for. If you don’t like something being suggested, next time try responding with something constructive and civil, not impertinence. We went over this with you before.

I’m just giving my opinion… I guess, according to you, we should zoom in on the Falcon cockpit every time it appears before cutting to the interior… for the past two pages, you’ve just been throwing suggestions after another, and when Ady delivers, you can’t but ask for more… you do know he’s practically finished with ANH:R HD, right? I don’t think we’re still in the “suggestions” phase…

You were not just giving your opinion — there was animosity behind it, and you know it.

There was no need for your ridiculous claim about the Falcon’s interior, so I’m disregarding that.

Yes, he is getting closer to the finish line with ANH:RHD, but until Ady stamps it as officially complete, there is no harm in a couple suggestions which (at least to my knowledge) haven’t been discussed here before. As an artist myself, no matter where I am in a project, I appreciate insight and constructive feedback from others, because when you have fresh eyes on your work, they may see something I didn’t notice or hadn’t considered. That shows maturity and growth as an artist. That is the whole point of why he shares images/clips, by the way: for feedback.

Now you have a good day.

Oh, no I wasn’t suggesting a zoom… The point I was making was just the focus of the shot 😃

JEDIT: Actually, zoom shots can happen after static shots. Still wasn’t suggesting a zoom, though.

JEDIT 2: Once again, apologies for the very rudimentary concept, but you guys can get what’s going on…

This is essentially all I was suggesting: just making the top of the Temple the focal point for viewers. I feel that having Yavin behind it in the sky can also help draw your eye there as well — and for some extra visual appeal, since there is more sky 😃

I agree with this idea although I’d be fine with how it is right now. One thing that I think could be good is to flip the shot so the temple is on the right side of the frame, given that the very next shot of Luke coming out of the shadows is on the right side of the frame as well. That way you can keep screen direction consistent which means your eyes don’t have to bounce around as much between shots which is something that George Lucas was very big in trying to maintain.

Ah, your idea is sound and I like it. So this then:

Honestly, I think I actually do like this orientation better — not only for the reason you gave, but also because it visually aligns with this shot too (Yavin in the sky on the right).

Well, we’ll just see what Ady makes of this and whether he likes this possibility too 😃

Is there another method that could be used like direct transfer. I haven’t donated for a few months. I just wanted to add a little bit.

I just discovered that somebody actually turned the Jabba scene into a holo communication sequence instead. Now I think that actually works much much better than what we got in the SE.

As I have said elsewhere it only could work if the subtitles change so Jabba isn’t just repeating what Greedo has already said.

In addition to what Bingo said, the hologram acts too much like Jabba is physically present (putting his arm on Han, for example), because the CG Jabba was animated as if he were there. Making it look right would require re-animating and compositing Jabba entirely, which would be very difficult, if possible at all (thinking of the compositing/masking problems here). And since Greedo’s dialogue covers all of the same material…there is no reason to do it.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. If Greedo already explained everything, we don’t need to see Jabba, period!

I didn’t have enough time to go into this recently, but although I’m all for a few ‘surprise’ touches for this HD release, I’m so glad .Mac.'s comments/mock-ups led you to reveal this particular alteration early. I LOVE IT! - as when the ‘Throne Room’ score begins at this point, it will make for a much grander-looking, final ‘establishing’ shot of the rebel base than the existing one seen below -

According to a quick squint online, the Great Temple, also known as the Massassi outpost, Base One, or the Yavin 4 Rebel Base was a particular ancient stone structure on the jungle-covered fourth moon in orbit around the red gas giant Yavin Prime. It was refitted to contain a grand ceremonial chamber (throne room), a control room, and a vast hanger for starfighters.

While some of George’s alterations and additions to A NEW HOPE were poorly conceived (in my opinion), there were others that were very successful. And one of the better enhancements was this excellent new Yavin 4 rebel base shot as shown in doubleofive’s comparisons - CLICK HERE

However, due to only a lower portion of this ‘main’ temple’s exterior being shown in A NEW HOPE, it was always unclear where exactly the ‘throne room’ was located. But then the ROGUE ONE movie eventually came around, and included an excellent view of the Great Temple’s full exterior shape as a ship swooped towards it, as seen here mid-shot -

For the sake of distinction, it seems it was given a more ‘pointy’ uppermost section than the more ‘stubby’-looking temple tops around it.

I’ve always enjoyed the various speculative ‘cutaway’ designs for everything ‘Star Wars’-related, and this is quite a good one of the ‘Great Temple’ that I came across. Despite it not matching the exact shape of the ROGUE ONE temple design above, it’s good enough to show that the ‘throne room’ (or ‘audience chamber’ as it’s called here) was possibly situated at the top of the wide ‘main’ body of the temple, inside the lowest part of the ‘pointy’ uppermost section - CLICK HERE (Then click on the image again in any area to enlarge it’s details )

Okay, so far so good.

However, here’s a couple of little quirks I’d like to bring up. Firstly, If you go back up and click on the ROGUE ONE temple pic above, you’ll get an enlarged look at the long vertical ‘slits’ on the ‘pointy’ uppermost sections…and see that there are SEVEN of them on the lowest part where it’s likely that the ‘throne room’ is situated. Except, when our heroes go for their medals, we only see FIVE ‘slits’ inside -

It looks like the (speculative) ‘cutaway’ graphic shows ‘slits’ at the ‘NARROWER END’ widths of the ‘pointy’ uppermost sections, but we aren’t able to see if there are SEVEN ‘slits’ on the ‘WIDER SIDE’ widths to match the look of the ROGUE ONE temple, which seems to have those ‘slits’ on the outer side(s) of the long ‘throne room’ part which Luke, Han, and Chewie walk along inside.

But while I’m not sure what those SEVEN ‘slits’ are meant to be on the WIDER outer side(s) of the ‘throne room’ part of the ROGUE ONE temple, there seems to be a ‘hollowed out’ section just visible on the ‘NARROWER END’, on the left-hand side of it that we see…so I’m just going to imagine that those FIVE ‘Slits’ are definitely located inside there, with the ‘turbolift’ doorway situated opposite at the other end that’s unseen!

The second quirk is that although it looks like there is ‘daylight’ flooding in through those initial FIVE ‘slits’ we see in the shot above, there is actually some other ‘stonework’ and ‘foliage’ BEHIND them in the more close-up shots of that area. It’s not another temple immediately behind them outside, so I guess it’s just some kind of ‘double outer stonework architecture’ which leaves a gap allowing for daylight to shine through in some way -

(Come to think of it, Artoo should really have gotten a medal too, considering all his efforts! But I suppose repairing him was reward enough. 😃 )

Personally adywan, I REALLY like the particular ‘framing composition’ that you’ve chosen from the very end of the ROGUE ONE shot, as I like the ‘offset’ look of the ‘Great Temple’ on the left, and prefer to see the whole entire base of it and it’s surrounding foliage in it’s fullest, widest view. And we can still see the uppermost section that supposedly contains the ‘throne room’, luckily. ‘Flipping’ it over to the right-hand side would mean it wouldn’t gel so well with the layout of the original shot in ROGUE ONE, of course. As for whether you decide to include a hint of ‘Yavin Prime’ in the distance somewhere or not, I’ll wait and see what you decide.

Loving the replacement ‘sky’ with it’s subtly moving clouds by the way. (Click on adywan’s initial GIF at the top for a better, enlarged look at that)

Great stuff.

Final stab at this, guys, I promise 😄

Been thinking recently how all of that open sky to the one side in my previous concept was making the shot feel a bit imbalanced.

The original idea for having Yavin Prime behind the Great Temple was to help guide your eyes there, so I’m hoping that this next concept will still accomplish that by instead using the planet (plus the edges of the screen and the treeline) to help “frame” the Temple, while also maintaining a more balanced composition. Hopefully I made that make some sense? 😃

I’m a complete novice at this kind of editing, btw, so it does look very rough, but wanted to try to putting more effort into the concept this time around and learn a thing or two. I know the clouds across Yavin Prime look terrible which is why I didn’t attempt to add more, lol, so hopefully I’ll have better luck at figuring that out another time. But anyway, this is just another possible idea for Ady if he likes.

And that is a great observation, ImperialFighter, in regards to the temple’s windows. I think that’s a good thing for Ady to consider, too, if he hasn’t already.
