Well everyone else in the movie is as dumb as rocks, so that’s consistent. Why did Owen (or Cliegg) need 3P0 then but says in SW that he has no need for a protocol droid? What job was he built for anyway?

Well, Anakin built it and left it with her mom… It’s no different than you taking your car you left behind 10 years ago when you left home, basically from strangers.

It came with Shmi, I don’t think the Larses needed it but you can’t throw away a working droid your wife has. Maybe Owen already started to dislike 3PO as a protocol droid working there, and was happy to see it go. And that’s the reason why he says he has no need for a protocol droid in SW, since the last one was rubbish on the farm, LOL.

So did Shmi need help working as… an interpreter? Or something more seedy… did she get sold to Watto for being pregnant? Ugh.
