As Lucasfilm continues to develop new stories, the intersection of animation and visual effects offers new opportunities to explore. Lucasfilm Animation will be teaming up with Lucasfilm’s visual effects team, Industrial Light & Magic, to develop a special Star Wars adventure for Disney+, A Droid Story. This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO.

I’m actually very excited for this one! I’ve always said that Star Wars works best when it’s for children, so hopefully this project in particular really embraces that angle.

I wonder what they mean by “the intersection of animation and visual effects.”

Maybe real looking CGI but with animated characters? Weird sentence though.

I have a strong suspicion that this is going to end up being an experiment in interactive storytelling. ILMxLab has been developing games for a while now and the extremely generic way they described the protagonist during the presentation is what you’d do if you want the viewer/player to assume that role.

Netflix already has a couple of interactive experiences with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Minecraft: Story Mode. So I could see Disney+ wanting to experiment with it as well.

The press release page linked at the top is pretty interesting. Most of those projects have actually happened. Rogue Squadron never got out of development hell, the Taika Waititi thing seems dead too, Rangers got cancelled for understandable reasons, and then there’s A Droid Story (???). But the rest! It all happened!

They also snuck Lando in there, which didn’t happen

I’m still half convinced the Rey movie and that Kinberg trilogy is not happening.

StarFighter looks like Rogue Squadron to me with a male lead and male director. Its even in the same timeline 5 years after Rise of Skywalker.
