Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception (Released) — Page 64

If you’d be willing to slot it into your extended version of ROTS Octo I could look into that for you.

I really do think the movie needs those deleted scenes in order to function. You can’t go from Anakin willing to do anything to save Padme one second to later saying that the Jedi and her are betraying him with absolutely no evidence. It makes sense that Obi-Wan is the only one she trusts with this topic since the last time she brings it up to Anakin he accuses her of acting like a Separatist.

I wish Disney would have released more of the deleted scenes with the 20th anniversary. The one between Obi-Wan and Padme where he admits he knows Anakin and her have feelings for each other and won’t tell on them would be perfect. I believe it would take place shortly before that second dream sequence and his first bit of paranoia.

Thanks Jar Jar! I already have the line integrated into my “Another Happy Sanding” edit. I just didn’t put it in the extended version because the goal of that one is to stay as close to the original as possible.

If people are interested I can post a clip later.

Wouldn’t it be a little silly for Padmé to blurt out a name?

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Yeah I could see that. My thought was that she’s frustrated and lets it slip because she’s trying to push the other senators to allow her to contact him, but you’re probably right.

Well, Obi-Wan is also a Jedi that probably has a very good reputation, so it’s worth at least mentioning his name to try and convince them

Well, why not send me the line since you already have it and let me see about it. It’s a clever idea.

I thought of another AI fix that could be added to ROTS/LOE that could help with Anakin’s turn, but I’m not sure if it could fit in or if it is something Hal would even consider; basically, using this as another seed of his growing resentment of the Jedi.

ANAKIN: “The Jedi are trying to abandon me, just like they did my mother!

What was first just a dream has become a frightening reality…

Here are a few ones so far. My personal preference is #2 but I haven’t actually tested any of them:

And of course, if none of these are quite there yet, I can try adding in more voice samples to hone it in. This was just 37 seconds of her lines from the movie.

#2 sounds pretty good. Here’s the one I used in my edit:

I think my #2 matches her original delivery a bit better. But I don’t have enough time to actually compare in an editing software.

That works better than I imagined it would. Did you blend the AI and original delivery together?

Nope, I just generated several lines until I got the lip sync to match closely enough.

I was generating my lines based mostly on delivery, not necessarily on lip sync. Although they kind of go hand-in-hand at a certain point.

If Padme says Obi-Wans name in that sentence, won’t that make it seem like he is the one she was talking about when she said she knows a jedi they should consult?

Yes, that’s the intention. To sort of slowly create a wedge between Padme and Anakin so when Anakin says “you’re with him!” (Meaning Obi-Wan) at the end of the film it makes a little more sense for him to think that. Earlier in the film, Padme asks Anakin to talk to Palpatine about letting diplomacy resume, and he shuts her down, so she realizes that she can’t really expect him to come through for her on this issue and pivots to Obi-Wan instead.

Personally I think it works better if you keep in a little more of Anakin’s paranoia around Obi-Wan, e.g. “Obi-Wan’s been here, hasn’t he. What did he want?” but I don’t think Hal is really interested in reinstating that bit.

Wow that’s very good work Octo, the line works perfectly.

Ah, I see! And you’re right.

Anakins turn to dark side is quick in RotS, but his turn against Obi-Wan is an even bigger head scratcher for me.

Some extra wedge between them earlier on would be welcome.

The “Obi-Wan” line is a pretty cool idea. Sowing any more seeds of division between Anakin and Padme before the big turn would help a lot.

Also, as long as discussion is back on for prequel edits, I’d like to bring back this comment from last year to possibly add to the Episode I changelist:

I have a suggestion for that opening fight if you ever go back to edit it again. When the doors to the conference room open and the Battle Droids look at each other in anticipation of the Jedi, I think it might be good to add a more audible mechanical whirring sound (like when droids move their limbs) when the captain droid and his subordinate nod to each other. The reason is that without the droid dialog in its current state, it seems a bit too quiet and either makes the CGI characters feel like they aren’t really there or draws attention to the fact that audio has been cut.

Additionally, I think as soon as the lightsabers light up in the smoke, there should be much quicker cut to the droids firing, because at the moment there’s about a full second (in the 6:03-6:05 timestamp range) where the droids just stand there doing nothing awkwardly (because originally they were waiting for the captain to give orders), which kills a bit of the tension and excitement of the action and again makes the cut audio too noticeable.

Anyway, these “maximalist” ideas for the edits sound like they’ll be fun. I could personally live without Yoda’s fights (and I still don’t think the Obi-Wan show necessitates the youngling stuff), but I know I’d have a much better chance of convincing a buddy of mine to watch these if that stuff was back. Sometimes it’s nice just to throw people a bone on flashing lights and action for action’s sake. Also, a shorter version of the underwater stuff in TPM being restored might actually improve that film; in the current state of the edit it is kinda weird how quickly the Jedi move from the forest to the not-forest-adjacent capital, and it’s also kinda weird why Jar Jar sticks around (though he does conveniently leave out Otoh Gunga in his recap to Padme anyway).

I do prefer Padme living regardless of whether Yoda fights, but I understand if that goes against the point of having a more conservative edit.
