The Mandalorian and Grogu are embarking on a new adventure — to movie theaters.

Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing Ahsoka Season 2, among those in the works.

I think this is their logical best bet for a successful film debut after a long hiatus. Hopefully they will rely more on practical affects and traditional film making over the volume this time around (fingers crossed they film in Pinewood). I see this story heavily involving the New Republic/ Emperial Remnant putting into place the pieces for Filoni’s film, possibly even re introducing the OT cast.

Now that they are making the move to the big screen… does this mean “The Mandalorian” show ends its run with 3 seasons?

As the big climax to a great show? Sure. As one more story after season 3… eh.

According to Deadline, it seems Season 4 is still in development in addition to the news today:

It’s not yet been confirmed whether Pascal will reprise his role as the Mandalorian for the new film. At present, a fourth season of his hit series is also in development.

That is… weird. I will just wait and see if it actually makes it do production, like all this other stuff.

What happened to Dave Filoni’s Heir to the Empire movie, this isn’t it. To be honest i think this is an awful idea for a feature and i’m a fan of Favreau.

Something to note is that the announcement refers to this movie as simply The Mandalorian & Grogu, rather than Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu or The Mandalorian & Grogu: A Star Wars Story.

Maybe this means they’re finally dropping “Star Wars” from the movie names and allowing each era to evolve as its own separate “sub-franchise,” a la marvel.

I was disappointed by season 3, but not so much that I’m not still excited to see how this turns out.

Not sure how to feel about this. I loved The Mandalorian but I wish it had been made into movies instead of a show, some stuff on the series was clearly filler for the main story (even if not bad). But how are they going to follow up on S3? I thought it was a finished story by then and it was already stretching what it should have been. Is Gideon going to somehow return?
I wanna watch this in a theater but I’ll wait for reviews first.

If they’d announced this after season one, or even season two, I might’ve been interested. After the lacklustre season three it’s hard to be enthused.

It will also be interesting to see if anyone in the general audience is enthusiastic. After all, these properties are like Pixar movies now; streaming at home experiences first and foremost. Didn’t Bob Iger say something about not watering down the brands… but there are still all these titles in pre-production at the same time.

This is a logical move, but I’m afraid the lack of quality and viewership in Ahsoka, Obi-Wan and Manda S3 (not to mention the films) has caused a lot of disinterest from the general moviegoing public and will cause the film to flop.

They would need a story, a budget and a reason to go watch it way beyond “Manda and Grogu will have some fun together”. As disheartening as it is to say, I think they need to bring Mark Hamill into this as a deepfaked, younger Luke. Tie Fighters, X-Wings and a random new jedi won’t engage anyone these days. It’s already been done, and it lost it’s return value after the Sequel Trilogy. Luke needs to be central to the plot and whatever mission Manda and Grogu will embark on.

They will need for the film to be of major importance to whatever future plans they have so that people feel invested from the trailer alone with Mark Hamill’s Luke carrying the film alongside Mandalorian - almost as an apology for the disservice they did him in the Sequel Trilogy, and hire 3-4 high quality writers with literally zero flops among them.

If this film is a success they will have the opportunity to drop the entire Sequel Trilogy universe if the Rey movie fails (and it srsly might do) and fall back on the rather empty void between ROTJ and TFA. If both of these films fail, and therefore both timelines, Disney Star Wars in cinema format is rather dead.

If they pull this off with emotional waves, a captivating story and a tease for what is to come; then it can be the spark to ignite the fire. But for that to happen they will need to get people back in the cinema seat, and for that, they will need Luke imo.

This might be the pathway to restore good faith and trust with the audience, and make the Sequel Trilogy more watchable and respected in the future when we got to see a Luke, Han and Leia at the height of their abilities throughout these “Prequel films”, before their inevitable deaths. “This will begin to make things right”.

If you ask me, this is their one and only shot. I might be totally wrong. I might be totally right. But this is the one, last chance for them to restore the trust and the fire to care about Disney Star Wars on the big screen again - the way I see it.

I don’t think they’d drop the ST so overtly, it would probably do the opposite of restoring faith in Disney Star Wars. It would be an embarrassing scandal and a major signal in a lack of faith in their own capabilities. They might sweep it under the rug, but does Disney even consider it worth sweeping under the rug? They’re making a Rey movie, after all.

I think what Disney Star Wars would need to become popular again would be a new generation, sub-franchise, series, idk these things are supposed to be called, with compelling new characters to be the new face of Star Wars for the next decade. I think that’s what they were trying to do with The Mandalorian, but it didn’t pan out and I don’t think the first season was designed with that in mind. I don’t think these characters are going to get a second chance.

Deepfake Luke is a horrible proposal because it will probably look like Indy 5, but it’s also inevitable I suppose. I wonder if it will actually go forward and be a movie though? It could end up like Boba Fett, Obi-wan or whatever is going on with Lando (if anything). It’s more likely to be a feature film than anything with Rey though, which could vanish like previously rumored projects.

Going on the disappointing quality of the recent Mandoverse content, I think I’ll be giving this a miss. Maybe wait until it is on Disney+

I do hope they find a strong script, with an engaging one-off story, like how season one of Mando was.

Ugh…

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 4 rumored to have 6 episodes, The Mandalorian and Grogu film acts as the season finale

One of the concepts has come out of this, count this as a rumour for now, is that the plan was to do six episodes of Mando [season four] and to take the finale, what would’ve been the finale, the big two parter, from the end of that and that’s being developed into the film [The Mandalorian and Grogu].” – MakingStarWars

[The Hollywood Reporter] Lucasfilm was intent on making season four of The Mandalorian, but their priority changed to the movie during the strike. Season four’s status is unclear.

I haven’t trusted any sort of announcement regarding SW for a while now. Too many projects are dangled in front of fans only to sit on the shelf and gather dust.

If the writer’s strike had an effect on this I wouldn’t be too surprised, though I can just as well believe the finale would always be this way, they already experimented with episodes in select theaters and this sounds like a suped up special.

This studio is so trapped by short-sightedness, it’s shockingly predictable, maybe this is their best bet back into movies, but something still feels cynical here, like they decided on it with a calculator more than a script. Do the masses still care about Grogu at this point? I’ve only heard about waning interest, how many times can the baby button be pushed? It’s not like baby groot kept going forever. Maybe I’m underestimating Mando but as safe as they’re playing this I think they might be in for some hurt again. Either way as someone not very interested in the adventures of the mandalorian even if it’s entertaining it still feels like the same holding pattern until the next one, I’d prefer to move on at this point. No more cliffhangers and empty promises, it’s tiring.
