thing

There’s something that feels a bit odd about the new shot here, which I was only just able to put into words. The explosion appears stationary relative to the Death Star, which isn’t what would happen in a vacuum. In space, a body in motion would remain in motion, since there’s no air resistance to slow it down. This applies to the explosion just as much as the TIE fighter.

So in terms of realism, the first shot makes more sense, or at the very least doesn’t draw attention to the weird physics.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Star Wars has always treated space more like a physical medium than what it is in real life.

The point’s not that it isn’t scientifically accurate, but that it feels off to me, even before consciously thinking about why.

Note how even in the original shot, the explosion follows the ship’s movement against the stars.

Looking at other ship explosions in the trilogy, it looks like whenever a ship is partially destroyed it maintains momentum, but if it is totally destroyed the debris cloud quickly slows down relative to other objects as it would in atmosphere. However, the explosion often does travel quite a bit in the ship’s original direction, and it’s often quite a brief flash of light, at least in Empire and Jedi.

All this to say that a sustained TIE explosion that remains mostly in place relative to the shot feels off to me, based both on physics and the style of the OT.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Somehow you still manage to impress, Adywan! I especially love that change you made to the Vader vs Kenobi shot although I noticed that the reflection of Vader on the floor is still the original version. This makes Vader move out of sync with his reflection as he lounges forwards towards Obi-wan. Regardless, its nice to see you’re doing better and back at it again with great updates as always.

OK , that’s really strange. I spent weeks adding the reflections, so i can’t understand why they aren’t there. I need to go check it in the timeline.

It’s ok, i just loaded up an older version of the file when i was doing the comparisons for the gifs. The reflections are there in the main edit timeline:

I’ve replaced the incorrect version with the correct one in the original post.

That looks fantastic, and the extra clip of the Falcon’s escape too. Very excited to see the final full movie.

All gorgeous, though I question the need for the yellow oval flashes when blades clash. I assumed you’d be removing those, since that’s not how light works!

I thought the flash when lightsabers hit is caused by the containment fields interacting, so why couldn’t that be yellow for [insert reason]?

That’s how lightsabers work.

can people just stop trying to debunk fantasy elements from a FANTASY film? Star Wars is set in its own universe with its own laws, that’s how sci-fi/fantasy works.

I’m cool with the reasoning of ‘it’s just Star Wars’, and definitely not looking to shove my opinion around here. It’s just something I feel that only the OT does, that personally takes me out of it, that I can see the special editions (and a fan even-more-special special edition) choosing to excise. But it’s no problem!

Maybe it’s just the gif, but the shot of Luke turning his head around while R2 gets shot looks like maybe a frame or two is off in the rotoscoping around Luke’s helmet. There’s like a shadow or a bump or something. Might be worth taking a look at?

Everything else looks great. I’ve been patiently waiting to rewatch the original trilogy for Revisited and Harmy Despecialized 3.0 lol

There doesn’t seem to be any issue:

is this the bump you’re talking about:

because that’s just due to the curvature of Luke’s helmet.

Personally, I think the lighting in the Falcon’s cockpit might be a little TOO blue. Maybe turn it down a bit by 10% or 15%.

I personally like the blue, remember it’s the only source of light here.

I did a comparison of the Revisited clip and the original, and I noticed in the first shot with Han and Leia that the monitor graphics on the top left was originally green, and I think the filter turned it blue. And now that I think about it, maybe the filter Adywan added is fine the way it is aside from that detail. It’s about the same amount of blue as it looked when Rey and Chewbacca were going through the hyperspace tunnel at the end of The Force Awakens.

I don’t come here often and post even more rarely, but I am a Revisted fan and have been since 2011. Amazed and very pleased with the progress and Adywan’s dedication after all these years! Excellent work, as always!
