Is there an commercial DVD recorder (at Target for example) that could copy, say, the THX tapes to DVD?

I think the firmware on some LiteOn models can be hacked to disable macrovision detection, and allow the recording of macrovision-protected VHS tapes.

Alternatively you could just get a "video stabilizer" box to use between the VCR and the DVD recorder.
