I hope Dial Of Destiny turns out good. I’m keeping my expectations low and in-check, but I get a feeling I’ll like it quite a bit.
My (unpopular) ranking:
- Last Crusade
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- Temple of Doom
I know it’s a very unpopular take on the Indiana Jones movies, but I genuinely find Temple of Doom to be the most boring movie of the four. Last Crusade and Raiders of the Lost Ark are my favorites, and kingdom of the Crystal Skull is fun.
I’d probably list them in this order as well. The last time I watched Temple of Doom it was genuinely difficult to find anything in it enjoyable.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)
I’m gonna go with release order. RotLA and ToD are virtually tied for me. I probably don’t need to explain why RotLA is a masterpiece while ToD I love for being so damn bonkers. I also love how dark it gets. TLC feels comparitively very derivative of RotLA and I don’t enjoy it as much, but it is ultimately well executed. The tone is also too light with the constant comedy. KotCS I feel has a much stronger premise than TLC but weaker execution. I still think there’s a great movie in there, it just needed one more draft.
Do not DM me for edits. Whatever you’re looking for I don’t have it.
Killing Indiana Jones would be like killing James Bond.

I had commented on this thread months ago with my rankings, but as I said I was likely to change them depending on how I felt at any given time. Like last time, I really do love them all, even skull, so this system is a bit moot, but it represents which I lean more towards at the moment.
Dial of Destiny looks like it’s going to be fantastic and I cannot wait. I’m also trying not to get too excited and attached before it releases, but everything I’ve seen and heard so far sounds good to me. We’ll see how they stick the landing.
Move along, move along.
I’d have to go with release order now that I’ve finally gotten around to seeing Crystal Skull. I was thinking it couldn’t possibly be as bad as I’ve heard…
I love Temple of Doom; I really don’t understand how anyone could not. It’s one of the most fun movies I’ve ever seen. Actually(and I’m not thinking too hard into this) it may be the most just unadulterated FUN movie I can think of. (Meaning the story isn’t why you love it, though the story’s fine, it’s that the movie’s just so damn fun to watch; not a turn-your-brain off movie, but you don’t have to think too hard to just sit back and enjoy)
(So I don’t have to list them but I will)
4.Crystal Skull
You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll kiss three bucks goodbye!
- Last Crusade
- Raiders
- Skull
- Temple
Literally my same ranking lmao.
“I know that all of you like to dream about space and are a little bit of envious of us. But you know what? We’re also envious of you. We are exploring space, but it’s only the beginning. Planets and unknown worlds are awaiting you. You will continue to storm the Universe.”
— Yuri Gagarin
I should point out that the Top 3 are all 10/10 movies for me, so ranking them is kind of pointless.
All his life has he looked away… to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph!
I just saw the new one and it is a really well done show, the director did a fine job with this and eschews the excesses of 2/3/4. Easily the second best one after the very first one and the level of quality in this over the three I mentioned, it’s just in another league. You want to see this one in a theater.
I felt this one was about on par with 2 and 4, which are entries which I don’t have any particular desire to see again. For me, nothing comes close to 1 and 3 in terms of enjoyment.
If the studio really wanted to continue this franchise after DoD, may I suggest making low-budget movies featuring a long-lost niece or granddaughter in the Jones family.
Call it…the indy Anna Jones series.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)
Just got home from the new Indiana Jones. A bit long, but I quite enjoyed it overall!
I think my ranking would currently be as follows…
They’re all decent though. Crystal Skull may be my least favorite, but I still find fairly enjoyable to watch (unlike my least favorite Star Wars movie, Attack of the Clones, which I find very difficult to sit through these days).
<span style=“font-size: 12px;”>We seem to be made to suffer. It’s our lot in life.
I’ve still never seen Temple of Doom. Maybe someday.
Updated to include Dial of Destiny, which I just saw today:
All his life has he looked away… to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph!
I’ve still never seen Temple of Doom. Maybe someday.
People have two main complaints about it, but even considering those I think it’s a spectacular action film in terms of set pieces and gags and weird fantasy stuff.
Anyway it goes:
Raiders 5/5
Temple of Doom 4/5
Last Crusade 4/5
Skull 2/5
The latter parts of the original trilogy are interchangeable in general quality for me, and are still amongst the greatest movie experiences. But I think Crusade while having some all time laughs in it has odd pacing problems in the first act. There’s also some weird moments in the finale like the ‘kneel before God’ thing. It’s clearly kneel and roll or lose your shins! Or that leap of faith which uhh… somehow never collected any dirt until Indy throws some on it.
Crystal Skull… eh. It’s toothless and dull. Even with fan edits. The effects are awful despite the occasional moments of old magic. They should have leaned into mythology and ancient art more when portraying the aliens. They should have fed someone into that tree cutter. They should have used Short-Round instead of introducing this other ‘son’. It should be the last good Speilberg movie but it’s the start of the end.
As for the new one, I will catch it later on streaming. If I want to see an action movie on the big screen with the kind of thrills the franchise offered back in the day there’s not much out here beyond the M:I series.
May be a hot take with some but after seeing dial of destiny my ranking of the movies goes …1.Temple of Doom 2. Raiders 3.Dial of Destiny 4. Last Crusade 5. Crystal Skull . Temple of Doom hits me right in the feels every time, especially when John Williams score swells at the end when Indy returns to the village . I love Last Crusade, but I had more fun watching Dial Of Destiny . I think James Mangold really nailed the tone and feel of Indy and I felt like a kid again watching it .
Updated ranking:
TOD
ROTLA
DOD
KOTCS
TLC
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone rank TLC that low, never mind two of you in a row. What’s the problem, the re-hashed elements or all the ‘here’s where the whip came from’ stuff?
no problem for me really , I just enjoyed DOD more ,though TLC is still really good .
Interesting, as I have no faith in a movie released today being as good as that.
to each their own .
Oh totally, just curious. I’d like to be pleasantly surprised about all of this, but I’ve felt that about a lot of recent LFL projects.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Temple of Doom
Last Crusade
Dial of Destiny
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
I like them all, though.

Unless i change my ranking with the video release of Dial Of Destiny my ranking is as follows.
Raiders
Doom
Skull
Crusade
Dial
I saw DoD last week. Harrison Ford is way too old to play Indiana Jones. He looked like an old grampa dressing as Indiana Jones. IMO the train scene prologue proved that the Indiana Jones character works the best, when he is in his late 30s/mid 40s. That scene was entertaining as long as the De-Aging effect on his face wasn’t too distracting. The final scene of DoD almost felt like an elderly person drama - depressing and not very fitting.
This scene was/is/will be the perfect ending for Indiana Jones:
Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.
The hallmark of a corrupt leader: Being surrounded by yes men.
‘The best visual effects in the world will not compensate for a story told badly.’ - V.E.S.
‘Star Wars is a buffet, enjoy the stuff you want, and leave the rest.’ - SilverWook
Ranking these movies is so tricky for me because I enjoy them all and it varies on what I’m in the mood for. Instead I’ll just list my personal critical rankings.
Raiders 5/5, Temple and Crusade 4/5, Skull and Dial 3/5.
Dial was fine I thought. Not as remarkable, but not bad.
Move along, move along.
