Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 140

I think I found a bug in reel 1: Jabba’s first line after Luke’s hologram finishes is missing its subtitle

“There will be no bargain”. This is at the 10 second mark. I had to go back and make sure it was originally subtitled and on 4K83, it is. Happens in both 1080p and UHD versions.

“Alright twinkle-toes, what’s your exit strategy?”

Just came here to post the same thing, that subtitle is missing.

Sh****t! 😦

Well, it seems a v3.1 is inevitable.
I’ll probably wait a little while to see if any other issues are discovered.

You probably just need to set the framerate to 23.976 manually.

Oh, I see the option now. Thank you. And thank you for making v.3.0. It looks amazing.

Sigh, seems it wasn’t so simple after all. I didn’t see an option for 23,976 so I picked 24 instead, I figured it didn’t matter, but now the audio is out of synk and I can’t find an option for 23,976 in TSMuxer, so I’m back in square 1 and still need help I’m afraid.

Harmy if you are going to be re-rendering the video to fix the subtitle, can you also check the encoding bitrate of the video. I’m noticing some compression looking artifacts going on particularly in dark areas. For example check the rebel briefing chapter with some of the shadowed characters in the background. I’ve only looked at the UHD version, so not sure if it also affects the HD version. It could also be because I’m on a terrible computer monitor right now with bad black levels, so its possible when I view it on a proper TV later it won’t be noticeable.

That being said without watching it fully yet, I think this is probably the definitive version of ROTJ at the moment!

Idk how Hal9000 does it, but I’ve never gotten that download limit message from his GDrive SW stuff.

For that you can thank the good people at Hondo’s Trove. I don’t have anything to do with them other than that they extended the offer to host my stuff and so I happily let them. They might be glad to extend Harmy the same offer.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I was about to download 3.0, but I don’t mind waiting for 3.1. I imagine 3.1 won’t take that long to be released?

I’ve found that 10-bit encoding works wonders for dark area artifacts and banding.

On the bug report front –

The 1080p encode seems to be missing a framerate in the H264 file. This works fine in the MKV, but if you try to demux/remux, you may have to manually set the framerate or you could get issues.

The 2160p encode has no black bars – not a problem for most people, but it does cause problems when using PGS subtitles. PGS subtitles generally need a 16x9 frame or weird and bad stuff can happen during playback.

Harmy,

I think there is one more mistake. The 1983 70mm 5.1 audio you’ve included is actually hairy_hen’s custom “Message From a Jedi” mix, which includes an extra music cue in the force ghost scene at roughly the 46-minute mark. This is an easy mistake to make as the 4k83 folks accidentally included this version for some time as well. PM me if you want more info on hairy_hen’s theatrical mix.

More possible fixes:

I’m still noticing a grading shift mid-wipe at 1:21:38, but I’m not sure if it’s theatrical or not.

Okay, I know the Boba Fett flyby is supposed to look janky when you watch it frame-by-frame, but could you check against 4K83 to see if it looks different there? Something about the current flyby looks like very low res video scaled way too large, and I recall this was your only GOUT-sourced despecialization in 2.5.

I suggest you try it again Luke. This time, let go your conscious self, and act on instinct.

I got a chance to run it through (an hours worth so far) in our cinema on a 7 foot screen. It looks marvelous. Well done Harmy!

Since v3.1 is inevitable, I’ll point out that the opening shot is from the SE. In 4K83, the TIE fighters are much bluer than the Star Destroyer. This change is not in the Viscomp. I believe this a power window fix and not due to the overall color grade. The fighters are blue in other shots in the same sequence where DEED uses 4K83. (FWIW, the GOUT also has blue fighters on a grey Destroyer.

Also, most 4K preservations use HEVC 10-bit SDR rather than 8-bit. Oohteedee should have plenty of information on this.

Yeah, the encoding could be better. I never encoded h265 before, so I could definitelly use some guidance.

Would suggest switching to a 5.1 mix that doesn’t include the added music to the scene between Luke and Obi-Wan, as that was never present in any mix from any version of the movie that we know of, certainly not the theatrical mixes.

In any case, this is truly an incredible release and achievement, Harmy. Thank you so much for sharing.

One other thing I’m noticing is often white points look a bit off to me. I measured some of them and they are sometimes a blue/cyan type colour. For example when the last speeder explodes at 1:00:57, or during the funeral pyre closup at 2:04:13. Some specular highlights at other times, also have at times a blue/cyan look to them.

Some examples of what looks good to my eyes (top = v3.0, bottom = after I adjusted white balance)

Added GDrive links compatible with the uloz links, so that people can mix and match.
I will keep the old links up for today in case someone’s already downloading them and then delete them tomorrow.

Getting links up on mega is being worked on, like the with the other files in the Introductory (Handuet) Guide from the first post.
Of course mega also sometimes puts the bandwidth limits on…

My guide (specifically, the Download Sources supplement) now includes Harmy’s new GDrive links and additional links from MEGA.

My Internet’s a bit slow these days, so I’m still pending independent verification of successful download and file integrity from Multipart RAR sources, but I’ve confirmed SnooPac’s uploads to the Spleen match Harmy’s checksums (UHD & 1080p). 😃

Thank you, Harmy!

Here’s to hoping v3.1 is ready soon!

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

Hi.
I downloaded the UHD rar files from Ulozto. But when trying to unzip them using WinRar I get a “Packed data checksum error… The volume is corrupt” on part05.
Has anyone been able to download and unzip successfully from Ulozto?
I tried twice to download part05 and I get the same error.
I’m starting to unzip from part01.
