Info Wanted: Just wondering... re acquiring a digital copy of something I already own?

(Edited)

I’ve got the 1995 THX Widescreen version of the original Star Wars Trilogy on VHS. But I don’t really like playing them a lot, because I don’t want them destroyed. I noticed I can download the three films off MySpleen, which I’ve already registered on. But I don’t want to do it if it’s illegal, especially since it’s movies I’m dealing with.

Is it OK to download a movie that you already legally own? If it is, then I’ll download them. I’ll only use them because I don’t want my VHS tapes destroyed. They’re too valuable.

I would say yes. If that DVD you download is acting as a back up of the same version you have on VHS, and that version of Star Wars is out of print I see no problems. I believe you have paid for the licence to view that version in your own home. You should have a right to protect your investment.

Enjoy

Thank you. I'll download it now.

BTW, I like all Star Wars films. Original, Special, DVD, Prequel. I still think the OOT should be re-realeased though.

Technically, it is illegal - but who gives a shit?

One more thing: What's the best version to download? I was going to download COWCLOPS's version, but for some reason it's having a hard time connecting. (I have a 56k modem. Sad but true.)

And is RowMan's Ultra-supplemental features worthy to go with the package?

Everyone will give you a different answer as to which is best. The new Cowclops set is certainly a good option until we see output from the X0 Project.

And yes, the RowMan discs are worth it.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

The best version depends on who you ask. I personally like the Cowclops the best, because it has the uncompressed PCM sound from the laserdisc and as a result I think it sounds the best. Other good sets are Dr. Gonzo set, the Editdroid set, and Dark Jedi's DE set. Rowman's supplementals are great and very worthwile. They have many trailers, several interviews, making of documentaries, and other goodies. I guess it depends on if that sort of stuff interests you or if you are just interested in the movies.

All right, I'll try downloading COWCLOPS again. But if the download time is dismal, I'm trying another pack.

I do like documentaries and stuff, so I'll give the bonuses a shot.

A better bet on getting those discs would be to ask a few members on this board rather than trying to download 4GB files over a 56k modem.

Ingo Sucks,

it really depends (dare I say it) on whether you have a 4:3 (1.33:1) or 16:9 (1.78:1) TV/monitor. If the former, I recommend either the TR47 (Cowclops v.1)set or the EditDroid set; if the latter, then the Cowclops v.2 set or Citizen's set (currently incomplete).

As far as supplements, RowMan's 4-disc set is the best around for starting out. Beyond that, you could look at babyhum and ocpmovie's stuff.

If you don't want to become a fanatic, don't look at Rikter's selection.

BTW, welcome.

if you've got a 4:3 -- Go with Editdroid. Not even a question.
if you've got a 16x9 -- go with Dr. Gonzo. Maybe not as sharp, but the color is more true

Either way, go with Rowman's supplemental discs. Essentially you end up making 2 disc special editions. If you wanna go 3 disc, I recommend getting Darth Editous ANH edit, and A Digital Man's ESB and ROTJ edits to complement the original versions and the bonus disc

Indeed.

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

I've got the dr. gonzo's and reckon they are damn good with the menu's and extra's.
Just finished downloading Moth3r's Pal Transfer of Empire and it's f'king awesome!
I'm from the UK so Pal is my native colour system so I guess that gives it an edge in compatibility/quality in regards to playback equipment.

I own copies of 80's VHS, 1997 special edition VHS and the 2004 DVD's. This probably isn't the right attitude to have, but i feel i've thrown enough money at lucas and his subordinates for them to be happy. If the original versions are not going to be made available commercially in digital format i haven't got a problem owning bootlegs.
Most of, if not all of the transfers were created by fans for fans, and have been non-profit making. The projects are not out there to screw Lucas but preserve a heritage which we shouldn't be denied of.
The law is the law though ofcourse so it's your discretion.

I should have said this earlier but...I don't have a DVD burner.

I'd like to get one, but I probably won't until next month. If I ask someone to mail me a copy, would that be a better idea?

Ingo, it's not a good idea to put your address out in the thread like that. Turn on your PMs and send it privately.

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Post Edited.

Who's the best person to send a request to? I'd like to get Dark Jedi's FACES set, because then it matches my own VHS (Widescreen) set. Is it done yet? He can mail it to me, then I'll just download RowMan's extras and burn them when I get my DVD burner.

Just took a look at DJ's Faces transfer, and it doesn't look nearly as good as his Definitive transfer. I'd go for that one, it's much sharper and cleaner.

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

More Importantly, is there chapter selection? If there isn't, I'd rather get COWCLOPS's version and wait for my DVD burner.

Unless you can tell me how to turn a DVD-ROM Drive into a DVD Burner.
